HARNESS
Trying to determine the parents of Peter Harness
(b. 1742 Hardy Co, d. 1825 in Ohio).
Some claim his parents are Michael Peter Harness
and Elizabeth Westfall. Others claim his parents
are Michael Ernst Hoerner (later Harness) and
Maria Elizabeth Dieffenbaugh.
Is there any way to prove one or the other?
Thanks, Steph

SHIRK
I am a descendant of Henry Shirk who lived in the county around 1800. I
have been unsuccessful in finding out his father and what other resources
may be available about him and his family.
I found on your helpful web page that San Brown could help with the Shirk
family, but his email no longer works.
Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks.

BAILEY - CONRAD
I have located the marriage of my maternal third great grandparents in Hardy County, West Virginia. Robert Bailey married
Mary Conrad (aka) Coonrod) but Conrad on their marriage document. They were married by Valentine Powers on August 6, 1805 in
Hardy County, West Virginia. I located some information on Mary Conrad whose parents are John and Magdelene Conrad (his Last
Will and testament had Robert Bailey and John’s daughter, Mary, listed). We Bailey relatives would so like to know about
Robert Bailey supposedly born in 1785 and I only locate him in the marriage and the Will of his wife’s father. Of course I
would like to know more about Mary Conrad (probably German) but I am asking if there is any information on Robert Bailey.
They stayed in that area and had at least two or three children (I am not certain which children were born there) and then
moved to Pickaway County, Ohio where Noah Bailey was born in 1819 and later the family moved to Knox County, Indiana where my
gg grandfather, Adam Bailey was born. I am happy to pay for any documents about Robert Bailey and where he might have been
born and who his parents are. It would mean so much to our Bailey side. Robert Bailey’s name is not spelled correctly on
the marriage document. On the document it is spelled: Baily but after that it is always Bailey. They were married by
Valentine Powers.
My mother’s mother was Belva Bailey so that is where my line of Bailey’s comes from and I would so appreciate knowing
something about Robert Bailey and also Mary Conrad (Bailey).

HIRE - HYRE
I sent the email below to Kenneth Colby using an email address on his article Known Descendants of Leonard Hire/Hyre It was rejected. Do you how I might contact some one concerning my questions?
Dear Kenneth:
I have read your “Hire/Hyre” Descendants and have a couple of questions.
I am a descendant of Valentine Cooper and there is some question who his wife was (other than her name was Mary). I noticed
that Anna Marie Hire provided items to Valentine in her will. Could it be possible that he was married to Anna Marie and
Leonard’s daughter Mary?
Also, do you know the name of Peter Hawse’s wife and anything about them?
Any information would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Nancy Mullins

McCLOUD - SIMPSON
My name is Bucky Schriver, and I live near Frostburg, Md. I’m doing genealogical research for some friends, and I was
trying to find information on Lacy Ann Elizabeth McCloud, who was born in Hardy County in 1863. Lacy married John Henry
Simpson at the “White Flats” in Hardy County on August 24, 1886. They had a daughter Virginia “Virgie” the following
year. Lacy apparently died soon afterward, because John Henry Simpson was married to another woman by 1890. John H. Simpson
is buried in the Burlington Cemetery in Mineral County, WV. I’m specifically trying to determine when Lacy died and where
she’s buried. I know that this is a long shot, but any help would be greatly appreciated. I’m attaching the marriage
certificate for John & Lacy.

PAYNE
My name is Bob Steinen and my maternal 3rd Great Grandfather, Evan Payne,
was born in Bedford in 1763 and married Margaret Baker (DOB 20 Jul 1764,
Hampshire, VA) in 1782 in Hampshire. They had nine children with the first
eight being born in Hardy before the family moved to Licking County, Ohio.
In the book, "History of Licking County" by N.N. Hill it stated that "the
pioneer Wilson", Jacob came ".accompanied by Evan Payne, in the spring of
1803, and settled upon the 'Wilson Section.'" Mr. Wilson built a cabin and
in 1804 traveled back to Hardy and married Nancy Colville.
I was wondering if there's any information on why my 3rd GG along with Jacob
Wilson left Hardy for Licking County, Ohio in 1803. Could there have been
an issue in Hardy at that time, or maybe a better opportunity in Ohio? It
appears that Evan Payne may have died in 1808 in Cedar Hill, Hardy, VA, but
I do not have this confirmed. Evan Payne's ninth child, Rebecca Payne, was
born in Licking County in 1804.
Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated. I am
retired and live north of Baltimore, MD. If it would help I am wiling to
drive out to review any records that may be available.
Thank you for your help.
Regards, Bob Steinen

PETTIT
Are you aware of any volunteer or paid resources who might help with a lookup at the Hardy County Library in Moorefield?
I've been trying to track a Jos./Joshua Pettit who owned land on South Mill Creek from 1767 or 1768 which was surveyed by
Joseph Neville. Emmert Bittinger, a historian of the area notes in his "Allegheny Passage" that the public library at
Moorefield maintains a manuscript of Neville's survey record, and I'm hoping to learn any more particulars about the
location, date of entry, etc.
Any help or suggestion would be deeply appreciated. I don't see from the website of the library that they have reference
services for lookups, but I could surely look in that direction.
Care and appreciation,

SMITH
I'm seeking information on my great great grandfather William Alexander
Smith who was born in Hardy County in 1831. I'm struggling to find who his
father and mother were. I suspect his father was Alexander Smith whose will
was executed in Hardy County following his death in 1833. I can find no
other records of Alexander and his family other than the will
files.usgwarchives.net/wv/hardy/wills/s5300001.txt
I have also been unable to find anyone else researching Alexander Smith.
Could you suggest anything that might help?

SHURMAN - SHULMAN
I found a Jacob S Shurman in the 1820 census for Hardy County.
Would you have any further information on this family? He had a daughter
Drusilla or Drucilla that married a Locke in Washington County, MD in 1835.

HEISHMAN - SISLER - SPEROW - WILKINS
I was looking for information for a Heishman buried at the Hardy County
Poor House and came across the "Queries in 2004".
There was a query from Jacob Miller dated 13 Jun 2004 requesting
information about:
Mary E. Sisler who married Noah Wilkins
Jacob Sperow who married Clarenda Heishman
I have a lot of information concerning those two families.
I couldn't find out how to contact Mr. Miller. You may have him contact me
at 540-445-5144 or jheish2@gmail.com.
