HAYDEN - MURPHY

I am looking for information on Charles MURPHY b:1774 possibly in Wales. He married Elizabeth HAYDEN in 1799 in Hardy Co. WV. and died there in 1816. The name was originally Murfoot / Manfoot / Murfitt or something similar.

BENEFIEL -SPAHR - SPOHR - SPORE

I am looking for information on this family. Specifically, Mary "Polly" SPORE was born in March 1797 in Virginia. Polly married John BENEFIEL in 1815, and they lived in Indiana. Early land records indicate a John SPAHR living adjacent to John BENEFIEL in 1811, Indiana Territory.

Hello Milton, you are correct, the REGER and SPOHR families did come from Switzerland the Canton of Basel. The REGERs came to Philadelphia in 1737. I can give you the name of a SPOHR descendant who has may be able to help further on that family too. Margaret C. Lew

BERG - KEPLINGER - MARQUIS - RAPP - SHELL

Frederick W. BERG was a ggf. He came to Hardy County after leaving Germany in 1834 (per 1900 US Census - Grant County). He, as family tradition states, married an Elizabeth RAPP, Pennsylvania who bore two daughters. He married Rebecca SHELL, daughter of Philip SHELL and Nancy MARQUIS, after 1850. She died and he married Priscilla KEPLINGER in the 1870's.

I have not been able to find a record of the death of Elizabeth RAPP nor have I been able to find a record of his marriage or the death of Rebecca SHELL. I have searched several of the vital records of that area. You may have knowledge of a record I could search. Frederick's marriage to Priscilla was, I believe, by a minister of UB Church. He and she are buried in the Leymansville Cemetery. I would appreciate any light you could shed on my search. Frederick left Germany and my ultimate goal is to find the town of his birth. Respectfully, George Shell

BURCH - GODLOVE - GRIM

Hi, I've spent years trying to document my ancestors in Hardy County. I have some information, but no real proof, and many unanswered questions.
GODLOVE, Emanuel & Barbara, Barbara in 1840 Hardy Co. Census, both came from Germany. Emanuel came here to Missouri and married in 1841 to Louisa SWANSON of Amherst Co. VA. Barbara later moved to St. Louis where Emanuel was by then a prosperous merchant. Her last name was still GODLOVE. They were most probably siblings.
Other Hardy Co. GODLOVEs were Francis, Abraham, Catharine, and Jacob. All of them except Emanuel were still in the 1850 Hardy census. Also possible they were his children, but unlikely he would have left them behind, so they were probably all siblings. After moving here, Emanuel became part of the LEGEND OF WILSON'S CAVE. Much info to share with "cuzzins"

A similar deed in 1850, in which Samuel, Solomon, John & William CAPLINGER & several daus & husbands of Wilson Co., TN, sold to Jacob JUDY their int. in land on N. Mill creek occupied by Jacob JUDY to Jacob JUDY, it being their int. in land inherited by Barbary CAPLINGER nee JUDY. Am I correct that Nicholas JUDY was the father of Henry, Jacob & Barbara? Does anyone know what CAPLINGER Barbara married, and did they stay in Hardy Co. or go to TN? Was Barbara's husband a son of John CAPLINGER & Barbara REAGER? Many thanks for any help!

ALT - AULT - BUZZARD

QUESTION REGARDING TRACT NUMBERS I have a copy of a deed dated March 1, 1779. According to the deed, Michael ALT, my ancestor, owned tract number 31 and tract number 43. Both of the above mentioned two tracts of land were located on the west side of the South Branch of the Potomac River. The tracts were also located very near what is called the South Branch Manor. Both of the tracts were located in what was Hampshire County, Virginia but is now Grant County, West Virginia and Hardy County West Virginia.

I recently purchased a copy of a book entitled, PIONEERS OF OLD FREDERICK COUNTY, VIRGINIA by Cecil O'Dell. On a map that came with the book (and on page 553 and 554), it indicates that tract number 31 and tract number 43 were NOT owned by Michael Alt and were NOT located near the South Branch of the Potomac. Why do the tract numbers mentioned in the book appear to be unrelated to the tract numbers mentioned in a 1779 deed?

Do you know where I can obtain information (or a book) related to tract numbers regarding land located on the west side of the South Branch of the Potomac River (in the year 1779)?
Primary surnames that I am researching are BUZZARD, ALT and AULT. Thanks in advance, Monte Buzzard <mbuzzard@fix.net>

QUESTION REGARDING "SOUTH BRANCH MANOR"; The South Branch Manor is mentioned in the ALT TO WELTON DEED. I just found it listed on an old map and it was located in what is now Hardy County and Grant County. It was once (1779) located in Hampshire County before the development of Hardy, Grant and Counties. Let me know if you know anything about the South Branch Manor.

HARNESS - SEE - TSCHUDI - VANDERPOOLE - YOAKUM - ZEH

SEE-ZEH Family (related to TSCHUDI-YOAKUM-VANDERPOOLE-HARNESS families) I am doing research on the Frederick Michael SEE - Catherine (VANDERPOOLE???) line who settled in Greenbrier County between 1751 to 1763. I think they were related to the Sees who settled in Hardy County in 1746-50. I'm trying to determine who Frederick's parents, siblings, and children were and how, when, why and where they came to WVA.
Several sources claim Frederick was the son of George SEE (ZEH) and Margaret TSCHUDI of Tulpehocken, PA who settled in Hardy Co. in the late 1740s but much of the info I have is contradictory so I'm trying to clear up the mysteries. I'd be happy to share anything I have. Thanks!

ELSEY - ELSY - RAY - WILSON

Am seeking information on Hiram W. WILSON. He was born about 1825. He married Catherine ELSEY (ELSY or ELZY)(b.1814) on June 10, 1846 by Rev. Benjamin Stickley (United Brethren). His children were Ann V. (b.1847), Samuel (b.1849), Henry E.(b.1851), Jacob Edmond (b.1853- d.2/10/1855), Isaac (b.1856), John W. (b.1859) Catherine had sister Margaret ELSY (b.1812) living with them in 1860 and sister Dorothy (ELSY) RAY living next door along with her mother Cecilia ELSY. I believe Hiram was the son of William and Barbary WILSON. Hiram owned property in Hardy (now Grant) Co. He is listed in the 1850 and 1860 census but then disappears. The rest of the family moved to Coshocton Co., Ohio in 1849.
Later still, 2 brothers Adam C. and Charles W. WILSON moved to Marion Co., Iowa. Hiram does not show in either place. Any idea where these people went would be appreciated.

Re: HARRIS, George and Nancy, ca. 1770s. This couple are the parents of Barbara HARRIS FITZWATER (b. abt. 1796, d. 1868 Tucker Co.), who was married to John FITZWATER. This family is shown in Randolph County in 1850 and in Tucker County in the 1860 census. Barbara's death certificate states: "Parents: George & Nancy HARRIS, born in Hardy Co., VA/WV." In 1860, an 80 year old woman named Sarah HARRIS was residing with them. I have not seen the original census microfilm and therefore do not know Sarah's relationship to Barbara HARRIS. I believe that Samuel K. LEWIS and Martha DAY or AULT were married in Hardy, County, West Virginia some time during the 1850's. They had a son, John born in Hardy County, we believe. I also believe that Samuel K. was the son of Nicholas and Susan LEWIS but cannot prove this. Samuel K. was born in July 29, 1835 (the family Bible just says West Virginia. There is some controversery over Martha's maiden name, some of the family say she was Martha DAY and some say Martha AULT. I have been told that her family died when she was about 15 and she married Samuel K. soon after that. Her birthdate is May 23, 1840--their son, John is May 28, 1858. I would appreciate any information on this family or help where to search, Thank you. Mary K. Lewis, mklewis@getonthe.net

WOLFORD -- According to his death certificate, Calvin WOLFORD was born in Dry Fork, Randolph, WV, Oct 24, 1858. His father's first name is unknown, his mother was Caroline HILL. Family lore says that his mother's sister, Mary HILL, married his father's brother, Thomas WOLFORD. Caroline, Calvin, Mary and Thomas are all found in the Harrison Co., OH, 1860, census. Calvin's father is not there. Further information indicates that the WOLFORD family may have been in Hardy Co. prior to Calvin's birth. Thomas' and Mr. X's father's name may have been Abraham. Any information on the WOLFORD family in Hardy Co would be appreciated. Obviously, I'd like to know the name of Calvin's father (my gr-gr grandfather), marriage of Caroline and Mr. X, parentage and siblings in the WOLFORD clan, anything about the HILL family. Your help is appreciated. Thank you.

I am looking for information on WILLIAMS descendants. In particular, I need info on Ezekial WILLIAMS. He was in Kentucky from 1795 - 1805, then moved on to Missouri. Prior to settling in Missouri he was a fur trapper and mountain man. He had numerous dealings with William Clark of Lewis & Clark fame. He married a Margaret THORNTON and had one known son, Samuel E WILLIAMS in1796. Samuel had 10 children in Kentucky and Missouri. Ezekial WILLIAMS claimed relation to Vincent WILLIAMS, Isaac WILLIAMS, and William Sherley (Old Bill) WILLIAMS, though the relationship was never explained. All info on this line stops in Kentucky, with ties to North Carolina, West Virginia and Virginia. Any information, seemingly related or not, would be of great assistance.
