I am seeking information on the KESSEL Family that came to Hardy County circa 1782, although family tradition says they came as early as 1748. First tax record gives name of Michael Kessel in 1784. (Name was spelled KEZOIL). Where did this Michael Kessel come from? Who were his parents? KESSEL is a prominent Dutch-Flemish name. Were they Dutch?
I am also seeking information on Benjamin EVANS who came to Hardy County circa 1800. He married Priscilla BOSLEY and they settled at Greenland Gap, now in Grant County. They had one son Abraham and family tradition says they also had a son Jacob and a son Edward, who was known as NED. 1850 census of Hardy Co gives Benjamin's birth state as PA. Who were his parents? I have much information on the KESSELS who came after Michael and on the descendants of the EVANS who came after Benjamin and will gladly share. I also have all of the published histories on Hardy County and will look up information for you and send via Internet. I do not have Census records. Mike Foreman, a proud descendant of the Kessels and Evans! Contact at E-Mail address or write to 330 Beechcroft Road, Winchester, VA 22601.

Robert C. Sollars Fri Nov 15 18:20:26 1996
SOLLARS: I wish to exchange information with anyone remotely interested in this name. Thomas Sollars (1782VA-aft.1870) was a rock mason. He had a tavern in Hardy Co., VA (WV) in 1805 which he built himself and I understand it is still in part standing to this day. It was on an old stage road. He served in the War of 1812, raised a large family, one son being William Rutledge Sollars. Thomas, it is believed lived out his life in Mineral Co., WV. As I understand he was in the 1870 Census living in the home of his son, Andrew Sollars in Mineral Co. Thomas' father was William Sollars, who I believe moved to Ross Co., Ohio in 1799/1800.

My wife's great grandfather Isaac Wolverton REDMAN was born 23 Oct, 1826 in Hardy County. He was in Greene Co. PA by 1852 where he married Nancy JONES. He served in Co. B 7th WV Union and was wounded at the seige of Petersburg. After the war, Isaac's first wife died and he married Cynthia Ellen WILSON, daughter of Jacob WILSON of Greene Co, PA and widow of Oliver KEENER. Isaac and Cynthia lived in Ohio and in Parkersburg, WV before moving to a homestead in Wright Co, MO about 1885 where they lived the rest of their lives. Isaac had a brother named John C. M. REDMAN who wrote from Knox Co., IL in 1888. He had a brother Jesse REDMAN born in VA in 1805 who lived in Chillicothe, OH. A sister Ann SPEALMAN born 1815 who lived in Cumberland Co., MD. His mother was named Ruth PARKER and according to Isaac's death certificate, Ruth was born in Paris. Isaac's death certificate says his father was named Jesse REDMAN, but I have not found any older Jesse REDMAN in any records except a tax record in the 1830's which could have been his brother Jesse. Isaac was supposed to be at least 1/2 American Indian. One cousin has heard he was Cherokee. The earlier REDMANs in Hardy County records were listed as "free colored" which was a designation used for Indians as well as African Americans in those days. Who was Isaac's father? What was his ancestry? We have a picture of him and he was definitely non- caucasian with a dark complexion, but his pension file says he had hazel eyes. Ted Stout
