TAFF - TAFFE - WARDEN - WILLIAMS
Our family came from Hardy Co. West Virginia. Settled in Wardensville, W.
Virginia. Peter TAFFE had two brothers one named John, another whose name we do not
know. We do know he was killed at Lost River, W. Virgina, a fort which was attacked
by indians. He was killed along with Paul WILLIAMS at this location.
Peter TAFFE (TAFF) married about 1758 to Elizabeth WILLIAMS WARDEN (widow of Paul
WILLIAMS). Peter was in the Revolutionary war and fought alongside George Washingtion
the winter of 1777-78 ( I have enlistement records). George Washington and
Peter were friends and at the time George Washington was a surveyor and
plotted the land which was deeded to the TAFF family.
The TAFFE family shortened their name to TAFF. The three TAFF brothers came
from Ireland in 1740. Peter and John have a long history of family in this
nation.
We are the William A. Taff family. I have been doing reseach since 1977.
I would be interested in any formation you may have and I am willing to
share my information with your group. Lisa R. Taff --- Alfred Taff

This is from the Petersburg,WV newspaper. "Battle of Riverton to be Re-enacted March 7, 2004
On Sunday, March 7th 2004, at 1 p.m. in the Clinton M Hedrick Community Building, Riverton, WV,
the Order of the Bonnie Blue, Phoebe Warner Chapter; Dixie Boys; Company B, West Virginia State
Troops (Captain John BOND's Company); Sons of the Confederate Veterans; Sons of Union Veterans

Riverton…" Additional information followed this intro.
This battle occurred on March 1, 1862.
Documented information I have says that my great-grandfather, Capt. John BOND organized his
company of Home Guards on Dec. 7, 1863 and he received his commission as Captain on Dec 9, 1863
and received his final discharge on March 10, 1865.
This information indicates that he did not organize his troop until more than a year after the
Battle of Riverton. Can anyone shed any light on this?? Will share info.

people listed. Surnames are MICHAEL, COMBS, LOVE. There could be more. I
did not print out the entire genealogy, it is quite long. If any of this is
of interest to anyone they can get in touch with me.

DENTON Lost River - Trout Run area
I am attempting to pinpoint six pieces of land, with six surveys (3 by Geo. Washington), all going to Robert Denton Sr, in the 1749 to 1780 era, all being in the Lost River/Trout
Run area.
Knowing some names may have changed, or were differently called by different persons, I need to find/know a map which might pinpoint some of these "Keys" that I have, whereby
I can match "known" features (of then, and today) on the map, and then locate (to scale) the six surveys.
Having very few "adoiners", or their surveys, the "neighbors" are little help; some of these were Frances McBride, Claypooles, Dunbars, etc. Other "keys" were the many land/water
features, such as The Cove, branch of Lost River; The Thorn Bottom, branch of Cacapehorn; Cove in Forks of Cow Run, of Lost River; Southwest Branch of Trout Run, called
Thorn Bottom Branch; Duncleberrys Hole, on Cacapehron; Both Sides of Lost River; West and East sides of Cove Run; East side of Lost River; Slate Lick and Clay Lick, on Lost
River; which evidently were all in the same general area.
Any help appreciated. Thank you. Regards, Dick

BAILEY - COONROD
I have a theory that the Robert BAILEY and Mary COONROD mentioned in Valentine Powers
Hardy County marriage book (8/6/1805, http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvhardy/harmarb.htm) are my
4G grandparents. Our family believes they were born in and married in Virginia, moved briefly to
Pickaway County, Ohio, and then to Knox/Sullivan County, Indiana. A likely census record from 1820
Sullivan Co., IN, shows a Robert BAILEY household surrounded on the enumerator's list by an Alexander
BAILEY and a John BAILEY, suggesting family ties. Does this information ring any Hardy County bells?

BRAFFORD - MAYHEW - PETERS - SHEARS
Earlier postings referred to PETERSEN / BRAFFORD. This is a correction to those
postings.
I finally made a positive connection to an Amos PETERS (b 1829???), married
to Eliza Ann surname??? with children Alice J (b1855), Sarah E (b1857) and
James W (b1859) all of West Virginia / Virginia. My findings come from the 1860
census and the names are very clear, with a positive connection forward to my
family. This Alice J PETERS is the wife of Frank BRAFFORD in the 1880 Hardy Co
Census and from my earlier queries.
I have also made positive identification that Amos's wife appears to be
remarried in the 1870 census to James MAYHEW - so I am guessing that Amos might
have been killed in the Civil War.
Lastly Elizabeth SHEARS (b1812) appears prominently with these families in
the various 1850, 60 & 70 census. SHEARS may be a married name. I don't know how
she fits, but placing it here for help.
Any of these names sound famliar to anyone? If so, I'd like to compare
further.
Thanks for listening - Ross

STICKLEY
I am trying to locate the Hardy County Poor Farm referenced as "near Moorefield" on page 271
of "The History of Hardy County" with the statement that Isaac STICKLEY managed the poor
house for the County. Other family researchers have identified the Hampshire County Poor Farm
at the Trough as the one managed by STICKLEYs and in fact Tobias STICKLEY is counted in
Hamsphire County in 1860 along with about a dozen paupers. Later census 1870 and 1880 show
STICKLEYs managing a poor farm in Hardy County. I know the Trough is very close to the
Hardy/Hampshire line and am trying to determine if these are two separate institutions. Thank
you. Nancy Stickley Bushby

NEFF - WILSON
My family is rumored to be from Hardy/Hamphshire County, VA around

Pickaway and Madison counties in Ohio around 1818 and shows up on the 1820

other than both were born in VA. Robert's father could have been John
