The purpose of this page is to identify the military veterans buried at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Fairmont Avenue, Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia.

According to A Century of Service (1850-1950), A Short History of Zion Lutheran Church, Wheeling, W. Va., by Pastor William M. Erhard, 1950, on September 14, 1863, The Reverend William Berkemeier, pastor of the Zion Lutheran Church, began negotiations to purchase a tract of land along Caldwell's Run for use as a cemetery for the deceased of the Zion church membership. The original plot was purchased from Joseph Caldwell for $1917.75; the cemetery was dedicated July 3, 1864. The Mount Zion Cemetery Association was formed and the following men were incorporators: W. Berkemeier, Ernest Ziegler, V. W. Siebrecht, John Jericho, Andrew Stueck, Frederick Knapp, Henry Frebold, Frederick Hoffmeister, Henry Zimmermann, Karl Kettler, Frederick Schnepf, K. Kunkel, K. Miller, Jacob Heinlein, Karl Meyer and others. Extensions have been made to the cemetery over the years, and by 1950, 9681 bodies were interred there.

ALL VETERANS BURIED AT MT. ZION CAN BE ADDED TO THIS LIST. The names presented here were Civil War soldiers unless otherwise noted.

In 1984, Audra Wayne of the Wheeling Area Genealogical Society compiled a book of the gravestone readings at Mt. Zion. Based on the way the book was compiled, showing the date of interment, number of interment, and the lot number, it looks like she utilized a plot map, which may have contained barely legible handwritten entries, as well as errors and ommissions. She may have read the tombstones, as well, and if she did, it is likely that many grave markers were missing or illegible. She had a daunting task and she made a diligent effort to record the burials at Mt. Zion. Had she not done this book, we researchers would be far worse off today, as the cemetery has continued to deteriorate.

Audra Wayne also compiled a booklet containing information about Civil War soldiers of Ohio County. She did much of her research at the National Archives while she was residing close to Washington, D.C. If she included information in her booklet, she had a good faith basis for doing so. For that reason, they are included here, even when not all of the particulars are known.

Both of Audra's books were a tremendous help in this project, as well as other Civil War projects I have done. However, there are errors in - and there will always be errors in this type of research - because some facts and data can never be sorted out. The resources we have today make research simpler but there are still conflicts galore.

Articles in the Wheeling newspaper indicate that committees were periodically formed for the purpose of identifying and recording the graves of veterans. One article mentions that some graves are unmarked. - It is difficult to know how conscientiously the committeemen approached this task, but it is certain that errors occurred. See Unmarked Graves

Compiling this list has been challenging, time-consuming - and frustrating, mainly because many of the veterans graves at Mt. Zion have deteriorated beyond identification.

STEPHENS, ALLEN. He is listed in the 1883 newspaper article and he is listed in Audra Wayne's list of Civil War soldiers buried at Mt. Zion. But he is not not listed in Mt. Zion Cemetery book. There were two men of this name in West Virginia regiments; one in the 6th Cavalry and the other in Carlin's Wheeling Battery "D" 1st West Virginia Light Artillery. It seems likely that the newspaper refers to Allen Ramsey Stephens of Carlin's Battery. He was also in the 3 month organization of the 1st West Virginia Infantry at the outset of the war. He was a POW at Andersonville Prison and was exchanged at the end of the war. Unfortunately, he was one of the 1700 people who died in the explosion of the steamer Sultana on the Mississippi River on 27 April 1865. There is no information about his burial; it is simply known that he was drowned. It is possible that his family brought his remains home for burial, or perhaps the family or other vets put some type of memorial for him at Mt. Zion. This book is out of print but read this: SULTANA DISASTER
