  • Phillip Wayne Burnette, 55, of Beckley, died Friday, June 7, 2002, in a Pittsburgh, Pa., VA hospital following a long illness. Born Feb. 24, 1947, in Charleston, he was the son of Imogene Boone Burford of Beckley and the late Fred Burnette Sr. Mr. Burnette was a disabled mechanic from United Muffler in Beckley and was of the Baptist faith. He served in the U.S. Army, having served two terms in Vietnam with the rank of corporal. Other survivors besides his mother include his stepfather, Richard Burford Sr. of Beckley; a daughter, Dana Burnette of Lima, Ohio; two grandchildren, Tyler Burnette and McKayla Burnette; a brother, Leslie Burnette of Mount Hope; two sisters, Geneva Bair of Ocala, Fla., and Iris Parsons of Mount Hope; a stepsister, Debra Harrah of Connecticut; and three stepbrothers, Richard Burford Jr. of Virginia, Dale Burford of Virginia and Mark Burford of Virginia. Graveside rites will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley, with the Rev. Allen Gallimore officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.   • ELKTON, Md. - Helen Dever Douglas, 81, died Friday, June 7, 2002. Born Dec. 30, 1920, at Welch, she was the daughter of the late Nathan and Gertrude Davis Shelton. She was preceded in death by her husband, William John Douglas, in 1966. Mrs. Douglas retired in 1982. She had worked at RMR Corporation in Elkton and Chrysler Corp. in Newark, Del. She enjoyed painting, gardening and sewing and especially loved to make candy. She was a very family oriented lady who particularly loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Mrs. Douglas moved from Oak Hill to the Newark/Glasgow, Del., area, where she lived from 1966 until 1999, when she moved to Elkton. Survivors include her children: Barbara Anne Bandy of Elkton, Md., Carolyn Dever Everett of Newark, Del., Nancy Sharon Dempsey of Elkton, William James Douglas of Clayton, Del., David Wayne Douglas of Knoxville, Tenn., and Thomas Richard Douglas of Newark, Del.; her brothers, James Thomas Shelton of Venice, Fla., and Nathan Kyle Shelton of Charleston; sisters, Eula Mae Miller of Inverness, Fla., Melva Wheeler of Homosassa, Fla., and Laura Ann Hudson of Inverness, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.   • PRINCETON - Sadie Mae Elliott, 72, died Saturday, June 8, 2002, at Princeton Community Hospital in Princeton. Born March 10, 1930, at Lowe, she was the daughter of the late William Gross and Ivory Taylor Gross. Mrs. Elliott was of the Church of God faith. She was a homemaker and a loving mother, grandmother and sister. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Wilburn Elliott; a son, Thomas Anthony Elliott; a brother, Jimmy Gross; and two sisters, Dorothy Hall and Florence Weise.   • FAYETTEVILLE - Margueritte V. "Midge" Hill, 83, died Saturday, June 8, 2002, in a Charleston area hospital following a sudden illness. Born Nov. 29, 1918, in Plymouth, Mich., she was the daughter of the late Virgil E. and Viola DeLong Kincaid. Mrs. Hill was a retired school teacher having taught at Gatewood and Altimont schools. She was a very active member of the Oak Hill Nazarene Church. She was preceded in death by a brother, Virgil "Buddy" Kincaid; a sister, Velma "Dutch" Holland; and a granddaughter, Cindy Hall. Survivors include her husband, Howard Emil Hill; two sons, Waitman Noel Bush of Shelby, N.C., and Howard E. Hill Jr. and wife, Bonnie, of Hurricane; two daughters, Kathryn L.   • Virginia A. Mullins Lambert, 77, of Princewick, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, June 9, 2002, in a Beckley area hospital following a long illness. Born July 5, 1924, at Mullens, she was the daughter of the late Andy and Ro-sie V. Hampton Mullins. Mrs. Lambert was a homemaker. She attended Cornerstone Freewill Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lacy Laxton; her second husband, Okey Lambert Sr.; a daughter, Rosie Randall, and an infant daughter, Frances J. Laxton; a granddaughter, Sherry L. Davis; a grandson, Billy R. Garten Jr.; and several brothers and sisters. Survivors include three sons, Issac A. Lambert and wife, Ruth, of North Carolina, James E.   • ALPINE, Ala. - Funeral services for Chester Ray Lilly, 81, will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Midway Memory Gardens Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Ralph Griffitt officiating. Burial will be in Midway Memory Gardens Cemetery. Mr. Lilly died June 8 at his son's home in Hoover. A native of Flat Top, he was a resident of Alpine and was a World War II veteran. He worked as a heavy equipment operator most of his life and was a long-standing member of the United Mine Workers union. He was a Baptist by faith. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mildred Lilly of Alpine, with whom he celebrated a 60th wedding anniversary on May 16th of this year; two sons and their wives, Chester Ray Lilly Jr. and Judith Ross Lilly of Hoover and Gordon Todd Lilly and Rebecca Frye Lilly of Scott Depot; a sister, Annie Lee of Princeton; a brother, Cecil Lilly of Princeton; five grandchildren, Chester Ray Lilly III of Atlanta, Suzanne Wallace of Helena, Stephanie Kress of Lexington, Ky., Melissa Payne of Center Point and Alison Kinneer of Cullodon; two great-grandchildren and two expected soon, Alexis Wallace and Zachary Wallace; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Paul and Mary Frances Warlich of Alpine; and numerous nieces and nephews.   • Bessie Mae Maynor, 97, passed away Thursday, June 6, 2002, at her Shady Spring residence following a lengthy illness. Born at Mabscott, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Jane Wood Parker. Mrs. Maynor enjoyed and loved traveling and will long be remembered for her wit and sense of humor. She was a member of the Hollywood Baptist Church at MacArthur and the Shady Spring Home Makers for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin; a son, James and wife, Lila; a granddaughter, Donna Spencer; and a great-grandson, Chris Burford, a victim of the 9/11 Pentagon tragedy. Mrs. Maynor was also preceded in death by four sisters and one brother. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She will be lovingly remembered by three sons, Tom and wife, Loretta, of Shady Spring, Doug and wife, Maureen, of Las Vegas and Gene and wife, Phyllis, of Hopewell, Va.; two daughters, Carol Schultz and husband, Robert, of Bowie, Md., and Barbara Thornton and husband, Marion, of Hubert, N.C.; 22 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and beautiful friends, Lorraine Haynes of Shady Spring and Barbara Sherwood of Daniels.   • Thomas Lee Rowe, 77, of Fairdale, formerly of Lillydale, died Saturday, June 8, 2002, at his residence following a short illness. Born March 3, 1925, in Logan County, he was the son of the late Fred and Mae Stevens Rowe. Mr. Rowe was a member of the Pentecostal faith and attended the Glen Daniel Worship Center. He was a Korean War U.S. Navy veteran. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Mae Rowe; three brothers, Paul, Johnny and Jim Rowe; and five sisters, Vadie, Sadie, Margaret, Embee and Hattie. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Marjorie Gaye Blankenship Rowe of the home; three sons, Gerald Rowe of Fairdale, Terry Rowe and his wife, Lisa, of Fanrock and Johnny Rowe of Saxon; four daughters, Darlene Carter and her husband, Danny, of Glen Fork, Gaye Bailey and her husband, Gary, of Saxon, Candy Ashby and her husband, Tommy, of Bethlehem, N.C., and Jeanette Bailey and her husband, Howard, of Fairdale; 15 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.   • Kermit Quinton Scarbro, 83, of Ameagle, died Saturday, June 8, 2002, at a Beckley health care facility following a short illness. Born March 8, 1919, at Cabin Creek, he was the son of the late Henry A. Scarbro and Etha Scarbro Cooper. Mr. Scarbro was a World War II veteran, serving in the Philippines. He was a member and attended for many years the Colcord Presbyterian Church. He was a retired coal miner 42 years and also served as justice of the peace of Raleigh County. He was preceded in death by his first wife, June Keeney Scarbro, in 1976; his second wife, Blandine Toney Scarbro, in 1997; four brothers, Oscar Scarbro, Luther Cooper, Monty Ray Cooper, Jimmy Dale Cooper; and an infant sister. Survivors include his wife, Geneva Radford Scarbro; two stepdaughters, Karen Keller and husband, Joe, of Beckley and Sue Shrewsbury and husband, Dave, of Clear Creek; three stepsons, Gregory Radford and wife, Paula, of Hemlock, N.Y., Randy Radford and wife, Sheila, of Colcord and Tommy Radford and wife, Angela, of White Sulphur Springs; five stepgranddaughters, Jennifer and Kelli Fraley, Carrie Altice, Amy Levie and Kim Radford; two stepgrandsons, Jeremy Radford and Joseph Keller, who was his special 'Buddy'; two stepgreat-grandsons, Jamie and Kurt Levie; and two brothers, Froud Cooper and wife, Carol, of Columbus, Ohio, and Keeney Scarbro of Starke, Fla.   • Raymond R. "Junior" Coleman, 78, of Beaver, went to be with the Lord Saturday, June 8, 2002, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness. Born Nov. 24, 1923, at Jodie, he was the son of the late Raymond Coleman and Mary Claytor Coleman. Mr. Coleman was a retired civil service employee as a clerk at the Social Security Administration. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Coleman. Survivors include his wife, Frances Coleman of Beaver; a son, O.J. and his wife, Norma of Baltimore, Md.; three daughters, Truda Horrocks and husband, Dallas of Summersville, Debbie Ness and husband, Ronnie of Baltimore, Md., and Darlene Shurman of Baltimore, Md.; five brothers, Elwood Coleman and wife, Ellen of Hammond, Ind., James Coleman and wife, Barbara of Michigan, Jack Coleman of Mt.   • Thelma Marie Collins, 75, of Chestnut St., Mabscott, died Sunday, June 9, 2002, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born Aug. 23, 1926, at Eunice, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Stella Burgess Eskew. Mrs. Collins spent most of her life at Rock Creek, moving to Mabscott in 1993. She was a faithful member of the Mabscott Holiness Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, June Collins; a brother, Harry Eskew; and her stepmother, Ester Eskew. Survivors include a daughter, Bonnie Janney and husband, David, of Cabell Heights; three sons, Gary Collins and wife, Myrtle, of Cleveland, Ohio, Tommy Collins and wife, Jenny, of Rock Creek, and Jimmy Collins of Mabscott; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marlene Umek of Parma, Ohio.   • MULLENS - Geraldine Mae Rose Dickens, 75, formerly of Alpoca, died Sunday, June 9, 2002, in Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a short illness. Born Oct. 31, 1926, at Herndon, she was the daughter of the late Gilbert McKinney and Gracie Cromer McKinney. Mrs. Dickens was a former nursing assistant at Wyoming General Hospital. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Dreama Archambeault; a grandson, Robert Stephen Davis.   • Everette William Harrah, 84, of Beckley, died Sunday, June 9, 2002, at his home following a long illness. Born June 17, 1917, at Backus Mountain, he was the son of the late Lewis Harrah and Laura Pugh Harrah. Mr. Harrah was a member of the Church of God Family Worship Center at MacArthur. He was a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA District 17. He loved fishing and flea marketing. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie Smith Harrah; a son, William "Billie" Harrah; five brothers, Nelson, Elgie, Luther, Harvey and Andrew; two sisters, Ada Goddard and Ethel Goddard; and a stepgrandson, Brian Tolliver.   • RAINELLE - Rosalie Stanley Hicks, 75, formerly of Green Sulphur Springs, died Sunday, June 9, 2002, at 11:10 p.m., at the home of her daughter and son-in-law at Corliss. Born Nov. 28, 1926, at Grassy Meadows, she was the daughter of the late Cary E. Stanley and the late Irene Mae Bryant Stanley. Because of the death of her mother ten days following her birth, she was raised by her grandmother, Lily Rose Bryant. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Hicks; three brothers, Fred Stanley, Curtis Stanley and Glen Stanley; infant twin children; and a granddaughter, Tammy Hicks. She was a member of the Lick Creek Baptist Church at Green Sulphur Springs, having been baptized in 1946. A former school teacher, she also formerly worked as a volunteer for the Greenbrier County Committee on Aging. Survivors include: a daughter and very special son-in-law, Helen and Richard Rodgers, of Corliss; two sons, Michael and his wife, Catherine, of Thomasville, N.C. and Joe and his wife, Kim, of Diamond, Ohio; four grandchildren including a granddaughter, Beverly Bragg, of whom she was especially proud, of San Antonio, Texas, Kim Wright of Beckley, and Lydia Hicks of Ohio; a grandson, Michael Rodgers of Corliss; four great-grandchildren, Trevor Bragg of Texas, Rikki Rodgers of Beckley and Rachael and Catherine Rodgers of Corliss; two very dear nephews, James and Wesley Stanley of Virginia; and a sister and five brothers, including, Frank and Pete Stanley of Alderson, Johnsie of Kentucky, and Kyle of Las Vegas, Nev.   • SINKS GROVE - Joseph 'Joe' Lambert, 69, died peacefully with his daughter by his side Saturday, May 25, 2002, after a long illness. Joe was born April 22, 1922, at Eckman, he was the son of William Lambert and Pansy Holbrook. Joe was a war time veteran serving in both the Air Force and the Marines. He was employed several years by the Marcy Psychiatric Center in Utica, N.Y., and in later years was self employed as a remodeling contractor. Surviving Mr. Lambert are two brothers, Fredrick and Ralph of Princeton; two sisters, Shirley Conner of Lenoir, N.C. and Ruby Oscarson of Otego, N.Y.; a daughter, Dr. Katherine Gorman of Clarksville, Tenn.; a son, Daniel Lambert of Raleigh, N.C. and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Lucy and two brothers, Teddy and William. Joe's ashes were spread on the mountain side of his property in West Virginia, one of his favorite places.   • HINTON - Ernest T. Lawson Jr., 86, of 512 Miller Ave., died Sunday evening, June 9, 2002, in the Raleigh General Hospital at Beckley, following a long illness. Born April 7, 1916, in Summers County, he was the son of the late Ernest T. and Hattie Echols Lawson and had lived all of his life in Summers County. Mr. Lawson was a retired engineer for the C&O Railway, member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and a member of the First Christian Church of Hinton. He was preceded in death by his wife, Athleen Abshire Lawson on March 23, 1993; a daughter, Linda Lawson in 1954; and a great-granddaughter, Lindsay Marie Lawson on March 13, 2001.   • Mabel Mae McBride, 79, of Beckley, formerly of 103 S. 3rd St., Princeton, died Sunday evening, June 9, 2002 at the Heartland Nursing facility in Beckley. Born June 3, 1923, at Weyanoke, she was the daughter of the late Elbert and Kessie Lilly McBride. Ms. McBride was educated in Mercer County, a former employee for the Midenform Corporation in Princeton and for many years worked for the Mercer Theater Corporation on Mercer Street in Princeton. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Benjamin McBride and Jasper McBride. Left to cherish her memory, two sisters, Alice Epling of Beckley, and Norma Michael of Camp Creek; a brother, Sylvester "Buddy" McBride of Oscoda, Mich.; and a host of nieces and nephews.   • Willie Marie Houck Scott, 86, of Beaver, formerly of Lester, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 8, 2002, at her home following a long illness. Born Nov. 1, 1915, at Maben, she was the daughter of the late Albert Gilliam Houck and Maude Houck. Mrs. Scott was a homemaker and attended Lester First Church of God. She loved working and spending time with the youth and taught the Junior Sunday School Class for many years in Ohio. She enjoyed vistinig and encouraging the sick and elderly and was a faithful servant of the Lord who spent many hours reading and studying her Bible. Mrs. Scott enjoyed working with her flowers and flower garden and doing crafts gave her great pleasure. She was preceded in death by her husband, Reeves J. Scott; two sons, Jimmy and Charles; a granddaughter, Ronda; two brothers, Howard and Everett; three sisters, Bearnice Houck, Gladys Goodman, and Maddrith Davis and a stepsister, Judy Drake.   • CALDWELL - Paul William Boggs Sr., 84, died of cancer at his home Monday, June 10, 2002, surrounded by his family. Born Feb. 5, 1918, at Second Creek, he was the son of the late Marshall and Mary Ridgeway Boggs. Mr. Boggs was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, recipient of the Purple Heart and a lifetime member of the VFW and DAV. He owned and operated Boggs Auto Parts from 1952 until his retirement.   • OAK HILL - Andrew Lee Lively, 75, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at home. He was the son of Daniel and Stella (Coleman) Lively. He grew up in the Dothan area and served in the European Theater in Germany during World War II. He was a coal miner in the Lochgelly mines and after a mining accident was a stay-at-home father with his two daughters. He was a member of Oak Hill Baptist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, United Mine Workers of America, and was a past member of the Civitan Club.   • BRENTON - Merle Leon Jackson, 52, died Thursday, June 13, 2002, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born Aug. 9, 1949, in Baileysville, he was the son of Marie Morgan Hall of Brenton and the late George Jackson.   • STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Glen Ray Plumley, 68, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at Centre Community Hospital. Born July 15, 1933, in Tamroy, he was the son of the late Ernest C. and Mary Susie Martin Plumley. On Jan. 21, 1956, he married C. Fay Wertz, who survives at home. He was a maintenance supervisor for the U.S. Postal Service from 1961 until his retirement in 1989. Previously, he worked in construction for J. Alvin Hawbaker. He was a chief warrant officer four with the U.S. Army Reserve, having served his country with honor and distinction for 42 years. He was a charter member of Park Forest Village United Methodist Church. He was a life member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 1600, a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and American Legion Post No. 245, and a board member of the State College Federal Employees Credit Union. Elmer Ray "Buck" Tyree, 80, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Saturday, June 15, 2002, at Chateau Grove Personal Care Home in Barboursvile, with his wife of 59 years, Stella Tyree at his side. He was born Feb. 22, 1922, in St. Paul, Va., he was the son of the late Harry R. Tyree and Myrtle Tyree Todd. Buck Tyree was an evangelist and pastor for 54 years with the Fayette County Freewill Baptist Church Association and the Beckley Conference. He was a faithful member of the Fairdale Freewill Baptist Church. He was a retired general mine foreman at Harris I and II for Eastern Coal Corporation. He served his country as a Corporal with the 4th Marine Division in the South Pacific during World War II. In addition to his wife, Stella Tyree, he is survived by two brothers, Ronnie and his wife, Pat Tyree of Prosperity and Dickie and his wife, Sue Todd, of Piney View and a sister, Mary Ellen Crase of Beckley, and was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Dunn. He is also survived by his son, Harry and his wife, Florence Tyree of Proctorville, Ohio; his daughter, Linda and her husband, Bob Kirschner of Arlington, Va. and his son, Danny and wife, Brenda Tyree of Yadkinville, N.C.; his grandchildren, Kimberly Jennings, Tina Erwin, Karla Lusk, Ronnie Tyree and Scott Tyree and his great-grandchildren, Scotty and Codey Erwin, Hunter, Samuel, and Luke Tyree. Service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Fairdale Freewill Baptist Church with the Pastors Dainel Legg and Wayne Peters officiating. Burial will will follow in Grandview Cemetery. The VFW Post No. 3110 of Oak Hill will conduct military graveside rites. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Fairdale Freewill Baptist Church in Fairdale.   • VICTOR - Josephine Louise Willis, 82, passed away Monday, June 17, 2002, at home following a long illness. Born May 2, 1920, at Victor, she was the daughter of the late Leonard and Mary Jane Woods Bickford. Josephine was a lifelong resident of Victor and the wife of the late Rev. Charlie Willis, with whom she faithfully served and taught with for 52 years. She was a member of the Mt. Cove Baptist Church at Victor. Surviving are four daughters, Merri King and her husband, Ron of Fayetteville, Patricia Sevy and her husband, Jeff of Cross Lanes, Ammie Neal and her husband, Mike of Fayetteville and Nioka Cole and her husband, Faron of King, N.C.; five sons, Reginald Willis and his wife, Rachel of Victor, Shirley Willis and his wife, Lucy of Victor, Grayson Willis and his wife, Darlene of Victor, Charlie Willis and his wife, Patricia of Rittman, Ohio and Timothy Willis and his wife, Susie of Dalton, Ohio; a sister, Claudia Willis of Grafton, Ohio; 34 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Service will be noon Wednesday at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Ansted with Jeff Sevy Speaking. Burial will follow in the Willis Cemetery at Victor.   • FAYETTEVILLE - Violet Justine Adkins, 59, died Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at her home following an extended illness. Born April 13, 1943, in Marfrance, she was the daughter of the late Woodrow Adkins and Eda Helmick Adkins. She was a member of Worldwide Church of God, Fayetteville, a homemaker and enjoyed gardening, sewing and crocheting. She was preceded in death by her lifetime companion, William G. Tingler. Survivors include her five sons, Randy Tingler, Billy Tingler and Anthony Tingler, all of Ohio, and Don Tingler and Jacky Tingler, both of Fayetteville; a daughter, Shelly M. Tingler of Lochgelly; a brother, Buster Adkins of Scarbro; a sister, Emogene Yoho of Elgin, S.C.; and six grandchildren. There will be a private viewing for family only.
