Charles was former owner of Haught Jewelry Shop of New Martinsville; a retired
employee of Bridgeman Motors Inc. of New Martinsville; and a Marine Corps
veteran.
Joseph was killed in action - WWII.

675. Iva Pauline Higgins
Iva worked at a steel mill in Gary, Indiana prior to retirement. She belonged
to the Pentistocal Church of God. She said it almost killed her to give up
Gene for adoption, but there was no such thing as Social Security in those days
for a widow. The people (she didn't or wouldn't identify them) for whom she
was going to do housework would not let her have more than on child, and she
had tow. ---Oral: Iva (Higgins) Ratliff. According to Iva's brother, Leonard,
the "people" she worked for was her late husband's sister, Otie (Pegg) Mason.
As a child Ira lived on Shidler Run which is off Rt 7, South of Wileyville,
WV. ---oral: ( Emma (Pegg) Parsons/his sister) After John and Iva were married,
he lived in several different places around the Smithfield - Deadfall area of
Wetzel County. He was a coal miner per death certificate. A neighbor who
remembered seeing and talking with him (Georgia Goundy) said that Ira was a lot
like his son, Gene, always laughing and telling jokes and had dark black hair.
Ira died of Typhoid Fever. He had taken the shot but it was too late to help
him. He sang hymns on his deathbed the entire day before he died.
Pat died of a heart attack while driving home from work one afternoon. He hit
a telephone pole and death was immediate. He was 52 years old.
