Descendants of Levi Starkey

Notes

George Neason Myers

Neason worked as a guager for the Eureka Pipe Line Oil Company, and was
stationed in Wileyville, WV. When he first began his job he had to stay in
Wileyville during the week, and commute by horse ten miles to his home at
Turkey Run Road. He was one of the first in the area to own an automobile so
he could commute daily to work. It was after he got his car that his daughter,
Evelyn, would sometimes go to work with her dad and run all over those hills.
One day she went with him to clean up his office. She put up a pair of old
curtins at the window and spruced the place up so it looked very nice. When
the supervisor came from Pittsburg he left a note for Neason and told him he
thought the curtains look "real nice"!! Originally N.G.'s name was George
Neason, but finally changed it to Neason George when the company kept making
his checks out incorrectly. He decided it was easier to have his name changed
from George Neason Myer to Neason George Myers than to fight the company red
tape. His brother also worked for the same company and had his name changed
for the same reason.

Ingram, (Neason's brother) stated in his biography that "Neason George, a farm
owner, an oil gauger for the Eureka Pipe Company, and now president of the
County Court of Wetzel County, his home being at Porters Falls." Actually, his
home was on Turkey Run, a dirt road nearer to Little Creek Road (now Rt. 7)
than Porters Falls. Apparently, Porters Falls was Neason's mailing address.
Neason died aged 75 years, 11 months by suicide. He said he couldn't stand to
live without his wife any longer. After his retirement from the Eureka, he
devoted his time to farming. His obituary listed his parent' names, wife,
children, and 2 sisters alive at his death, a member of the First Christian
Church of Pine Grove, and a member of Wetzel Lodge No. 39, A.F. & A.M. --- his
orbit.

Neason & Eva were married at the Point House (now torn down) in New
Martinsville, located at the point where Big Fishing Creek empties into the
Ohio River. He was 23, she was 20, and was married by Rev. Smith with J.W.
Starkey, B.G. Starkey and Minnie Mallot witnesses.

548. Robert Myers

Robert died at age 19 of pneumonia caused by showering after a high school gym
class and going outside afterwards. (This was according to his sister, Evelyn
(Myers) Grimes). Robert was never married. After his death, his mother
developed a fear of any Myers naming a child Robert. She told her other
children, never to give that name to a child because her son, Robert died.
Grandma's (Nancy) son, Robert died, and Great Grandma's son, Robert had died.
According to his brother Melvin's biography in the Wetzel County History book,
Robert got pneumonia during the influenza outbreak of 1931. Both boys had the
disease. Melvin was confined at home and got well, while Robert was confined
to the hospital which was located in the present New Martinsville VFW. Robert
died because there was no penicillin to combat the disease. They didn't tell
Melvin of Robert's death until after Mel was fully recovered. (pg 179 of
Wetzel County History 1983)

287. Riley Ice

Ira was a rather colorful character in the Smithfield, Arches Fork area. He was known to dabble in bootleg licquer and ran a saloon in Folsom. The house in Folsom is still there; it faces the railroad just after the underpass heading North and is painted blue. It has a large basement. He kept the saloon in the upper part of the house and lived in the basement where Lulu was born. When the trains would pass, they would slow and coal or other commodities would be thrown off for Riley and he would reciprocate with a bottle of "Booze". His later life was spent in a little house across the bridge from the main part of Smithfield.
