3. Levi Starkey
As a young man, Levi came over to Virginia and married Sarah Price. They
moved back to Ohio for awhile only to return to Virginia. Here Levi became an
extensive land owner. His reputation for being a man of considerable wealth
caused three men to attack and murder him at his farm near what is now Robinson
Mill in March, 1874. His assailants did not obtain his money for it was buried
in a sack of corn meal. Sarah Starkey testified at the trial. She identified
three men, Carl Cartwright, John E. Freeland, and Jack Robinson, by their
voices for her eye sight was bad. The robbers at the time wanted to kill Sarah
too, but John Freeland said, "No, She has given me bread and butter many
times." These men served a short term in prison. These men were said to have
come to a bad end. John Freeland was said to have been shot while standing on
a porch in Mannington. The shot was fired from tank hill. Carl Cartwright was
shot while talking to a neighbor, leaning against a tree. The man who fired
the shot stood up and waved. A possee was gotten up but the man was gone.
Upon inspecting the place from where the shot was fired, the grass was mashed
down and branches of a shrub broken for the gun to rest. Levi's death was said
to have been avenged by his sons.Inscription on Levi's tombstone:
"Murdered"
!How short the race my husband has run
Cut down in all his bloom,
His course but yesterday began
Now is finished in the Lamb.Levi left the land for the Pricetown Cemetery and the land for the school
house.
