Joseph M. Markley, 23, married Evelyn Bowers, 16, 3 September 1940 at Sistersville, W.Va. They had at least two children, Donald and Carolyn. The widow remarried, to John Richard Martin, and the children seem to have used the Martin surname. Donald Martin's obituary, 1999, doesn't mention Joseph Markley.

Joseph enlisted in the U. S. Army 13 March 1944 at Ft Thomas, Newport, Kentucky.
A farmhand, he had a grammar school education and was married.

Memorialized on Tablets of the Missing, Ardennes-American Cemetery, Belgium.

WIDOW'S OBITUARY: Evelyn V. Martin, of Sistersville, departed this life and joined her heavenly family on June 15, 2012. - She was a daughter of the late James Bowers and Rachael Oliver Bowers. - Evelyn was a member of the Smith Ridge Chapel Church. She was a retired employee of Union Bank and she was employed by Tyler County Schools as Service Personnel. - She is survived by a son, David (Cindy) Martin of Colorado Springs, CO; daughters; Margaret (Bill) Jeffries of Sistersville, Joan (Donnie) Evans of Sistersville, Carolyn Mercer-Martin of Myrtle Beach, SC and Pam (Steve) Hanna of Wadsworth, OH; fifteen grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren. - In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by husbands, Joseph Markley and John Richard Martin; infant son, Charles Martin; son, Donald (Carol) Martin; brothers, Robert, Raymond and Alva Guy Bowers; and sisters, Rozella Virden, Dessie Allison, Ruth Yost Ferrell, Mazie Robinson, Laura Colvin, Emma Lough and Mary Heatherington. - Services will be Monday at 1:00 pm at Myers Funeral Home with Pastor Roger Yost officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 4-8 pm at Myers Funeral Home. Interment will be at Friendly Cemetery.
