ANDERSON, CALEB L. - Company "C" 7th Regiment W.Va. Volunteer Infantry. Enrolled at Sistersville; age 42; mustered in 20 Dec. 1861 at Grafton. Farmer, born in Tuscarawas Co., Ohio, Transferred from Co. K, 7 Sept. 1863, by consolidation of regiment. Died in Convalescent Camp, Alexandria, Va., 13 Aug 1864. [Service Record: Died 24 Aug 1863 of effects of gunshot wound in hospital at West Phila., Pa. Shot in right heel at Gettysburg; contracted gangrene. Resided in New Martinsville, Wetzel County.]

ARCHER, NEIL - Company "E" 14th Regiment W.Va. Volunteer Infantry. Enrolled at Middlebourne; age 43; mustered in 29 Aug 1862 at Wheeling. Died of disease 23 Dec 1862 at Cumberland, Md. Sergeant. [Service Record: He died of Phthisis Pulmonalis. He was born in Tyler County and lived in Middlebourne before the war.] -- He married Margaret Ann Cookus 15 Dec 1840 in Tyler County.

BUCHER, GEORGE S. - Company "E" 2nd Regiment W.Va. Volunteer Infantry, subsequently 5th Cavalry. Enrolled at Wheeling; 24; mustered in 16 June 1861 at Wheeling. Farmer, born in Ohio County, W.Va. Killed in action at Bull Run, Va., 29 Aug 1862. -- He was the son of Thomas Bucher and Rebecca Schmoll. The family resided in Tyler County.

BUCHER, JOHN - Company "K" 7th Regiment W.Va. Volunteer Infantry. Enrolled at Sistersville; age 20; mustered in 20 Dec. 1861 at Grafton. Farmer, born Tyler Co., W.Va. Died at Grafton, W.Va., 25 Feb. 1862. [Service Record: Measles Encephalitis] -- He was the son of Thomas Bucher and Rebecca Schmoll. The family resided in Tyler County.

CARPENTER, DAVID D. H. - Company "F" 14th Regiment W.Va. Volunteer Infantry. Enrolled at Hebron; age 24; mustered in 30 Aug 1862 at Wheeling. Died of disease 14 Jan. 1864, in Tyler Co., W.Va. [Service Record: Born in Tyler County. Died of disease 13 Jan. 1864 at Middlebourne; died of consumption.]

CHRISTAIN, JOHN A. - Company "K" 7th Regiment W.Va. Volunteer Infantry. Enrolled at Sistersville; age 22; mustered in 20 Dec. 1861 at Grafton. School-teacher, born Belmont Co., Ohio. Killed in action, 3 July 1863, at Gettysburg, Pa. 1st Sergeant. [Service Record: Name recorded as Christian & Christen. Died 25 Sept. 1863 at Camp Littleman Gen'l Hospital, Gettysburg, Pa. of penetrating wound of left lung received in action at Gettysburg, Pa. 3 July 1863.] -- Mother, Malinda Christen, applied for and received a pension. He is buried at Grandon Cemetery, Tyler County. He was the son of John and Malinda Christian/Christen, found in Tyler County in both 1850 & 1860 census records.

COFFIELD, GEORGE - Company "C" 7th Regiment W.Va. Volunteer Infantry. Enrolled at Sistersville; 18; mustered in 7 Aug. 1861 at Wheeling. Farmer, born Marshall Co., W.Va. Killed in action at Antietam, Md., 17 Sept 1862.

COFFIELD, THOMAS - Company "C" 7th Regiment W.Va. Volunteer Infantry. Enrolled at Sistersville; 18; mustered in 7 Aug. 1861 at Wheeling. Farmer, born Marshall Co., W.Va. Re-enlisted as a Vet. Vol. 4 Jan 1864 under Gen'l Order #192, War Dept. Series of 1853. Died of wounds reeived in action at Spottsylvania, Va. 10 May 1864.

CONOWAY, ELI - Company "E" 10th Regiment W.Va. Volunteer Infantry. First Lieutenant, age 28; mustered in 12 Apr 1862 at Buckhannon. Date of commission, 2 Apr 1862, to rank 1 Apr. 1862; resigned 18 Jan. 1863 [Service Record: Ill health; not able for duty since 1 Sept. 1862. He signed his name as Eli Conoway.] -- Following discharge, he died 12 Apr 1863. He was the son of Andrew & Rebecca (Luman) Conaway and is buried at Spring Hill Cemetery, Tyler County.

COX, WILLIAM L. - Company "E" 14th Regiment W.Va. Volunteer Infantry. Enrolled at Middlebourne; age 18; mustered in 29 Aug 1862 at Wheeling. Died of disease 26 Dec. 1862 in hospital at Cumberland, Md. [Service Record: Enrolled 8 Aug 1862 at Middlebourne. Died of Chronic Diarrhea.] -- This writer thinks this man was the son of Jefferson Cox, found in both the 1850 & 1860 census records of Tyler County. In the 1860 census, while living with Jefferson, he is William L., although it might be indexed as William S. It is an "L" if you compare to the other letter "L" on the page.

DARNELL, JOHN C. - Company "E" 14th Regiment W.Va. Volunteer Infantry. Enrolled at Middlebourne; age 29; mustered in 29 Aug 1862 at Wheeling. Died of disease 16 Dec. 1863, at Petersburg, Va. -- [Service Record: Born in Tyler County.] John was the son of Aaron & Jane Darnell, residents of Wick, Tyler County, at the time of the 1860 census. His mother, Jane (Pierpont/Pierpoint), applied for and received a government pension.

FORRESTER, JOHN - Company "E" 10th Regiment W.Va. Volunteer Infantry. Enrolled at Tyler County; 18; mustered in 12 Apr 1862 at Buckhannon. Farmer, born Tyler Co., W.Va. Died 12 Nov. 1863, of wounds received in action at Droop Mountain.

GOFF, FRANCIS S. - Company "I" 15th Regiment W.Va. Volunteer Infantry. Enrolled at Grafton; age 35; mustered in 11 Oct 1862 at Wheeling. Died 23 Nov. 1862, in Tyler Co., W.Va., cause unknown. Corporal. [Service Record: Born in Barbour County, W.Va. Died at his home in Taylor Co., W.Va. 23 Nov. 1862, cause accidental gunshot wound. Another card states "Died in Tyler County, Va.] Francis S. Goff is buried at Big Run Church Cemetery, Shirley, Tyler County.

GORBY, JOHN - Company "K" 15th Regiment W.Va. Volunteer Infantry. Age 30; mustered in 26 Dec. 1863. Died of Typhoid Fever 6 July 1864, at Gallipolis, Ohio. [Service Record: A farmer, 30, born in Tyler County, W.Va. Enrolled at Sistersville, 26 Dec. 1863; mustered in 8 Jan. 1864 at Wheeling. Death date shown as both 10 June 1864 & 6 July 1864 at Gallipolis Gen. Hospital.]

GORBY, Sergen(t) - 7th Regiment W.Va. Volunteer Infantry, Unassigned Recruits. Enrolled at Centreville; 23; mustered in 24 Mar. 1864 at Wheeling. Died 30 May 1864 of wounds received in action 24 May 1864 at North Ann River, Va. [Service Record: Born in Tyler County. Died at Mt. Pleasant General Hospital, Washington, DC 30 May 1864 of Empyemia following Gunshot wound to right side of chest (penetrating). Admitted to hospital 29 May 1864. Wife was Mary Gorby and they resided in Tyler County. "Died of Empyemia on Monday Evng Mary 30th/64 at half past five."]

GREGG, CHARLES W. - Company "C" 7th Regiment W.Va. Volunteer Infantry. Enrolled at Sistersville; age 19; mustered in 7 Aug 1861 at Sistersville. Farmer, born Tyler Co., W.Va. Died of disease 14 Jan 1862 at Cumberland, Md.

HAINS, THOMAS J. - Company "E" 10th Regiment W.Va. Volunteer Infantry. Enrolled at Tyler County; age 18; mustered in 12 Apr 1862 at Buckhannon. Farmer, born Tyler Co., W.Va. Died of disease at his home 6 May 1864.

HAYS, ABRAHAM - Company "E" 14th Regiment W.Va. Volunteer Infantry. Enrolled at Middlebourne; age 19; mustered in 29 Aug 1862 at Wheeling. Died of disease 28 Dec. 1862, in hospital at Cumberland, Md. [Service Record: Farmer, born in Tyler County. Died of Typhoid Fever]

HAYS, ANDREW C. - Company "E" 14th Regiment W.Va. Volunteer Infantry. Enrolled at Shriver Moore's; age 18. Died of disease 28 Dec. 1862, in hospital at Cumberland, Md. Never mustered in. [Service Record: Farmer, born in Tyler County. Died of Pneumonia]

IRELAND, WILLIAM W. - Company "F" 1st Regiment W.Va. Light Artillery Volunteers. Enrolled at West Union; 26; mustered in 1 Oct 1862 at Clarksburg. Died of Diptheria Dec 1863, in Post Hosp., Clarksburg. [Service Record: Taken prisoner at Martinsburg, Va. on 14 June 1863; paroled. Farmer, born in Tyler County.]

JOHNSON, JOHN - Company "F" 14th Regiment W.Va. Volunteer Infantry. Enrolled at Hebron; age 28; mustered in 30 Aug 1862 at Wheeling. Captured 9 May 1864 at Cloyd's Mountain, Va. Died in hands of the enemy. [Service Record: Born in Tyler County. Promoted to Sergeant 15 Apr 1863; promoted to 1st Sergeant 6 Aug. 1863. Captured at the battle of Cloyd Mountain, Va. 9 My 1864. Died in Rebel Prison.]

KELCH, GIDEON - Company "C" 7th Regiment W.Va. Volunteer Infantry. Enrolled at Sistersville; 21; mustered in 7 Aug. 1861 at Wheeling. Farmer, born Tyler Co., W.Va. Died of disease at Cumberland, Md., 22 Dec 1861.

LASHARE, HEZEKIAH - Company "E" 14th Regiment W.Va. Volunteer Infantry. Enrolled at Middlebourne; age 25; mustered in 29 Aug 1862 at Wheeling. Died 26 Nov. 1862 at Clarksburg, W.Va. Cause not given. [Service Record: Various spellings, including Leashure. Typhoid Fever] -- His wife was Mary Ann Nelson; they married in Marshall County in 1855. Both were born in Fayette Co., Pa.

LEMASTERS, EUGENIUS - Company "E" 14th Regiment W.Va. Volunteer Infantry. Enrolled at Middlebourne; age 36; mustered in 29 Aug 1862 at Wheeling. Died of disease 20 June 1863, in Regimental Hospital, New Creek, W.Va. [Service Record: Died of Typhoid Fever 20 Jan 1863.] -- Eugenius was the son of Newton Lemasters and Lourena Furbee. He married Irena Jacobs in Tyler County in 1855, and they are found in the 1860 census of Tyler County.

MAYFIELD, WILLIAM - Company "I" 15th Regiment W.Va. Volunteer Infantry. Enrolled at Grafton; 23; mustered in 11 Oct. 1862 at Wheeling. Died 2 Jan 1863 at Cherry Run, Va., cause not given. Corporal. [Service Record: Enrolled 24 Aug. 1862; mustered in 11 Oct. 1862. Died in camp at Cherry Run, Va. Cause: Congestion of the lungs, 2 Jan 1863. Born at Grafton, W.Va.] -- William Mayfield is buried at the Catherine Haught Cemetery, Atwood, Tyler County. He was the son of James Madison Mayfield and Permelia Straight. The family was residing in Wetzel County at the time of the 1850 census and in Tyler County in 1860. In 1862, he married Nancy Jane Bennett.

MICHAEL, GREENFIELD - Company "E" 7th Regiment W.Va. Volunteer Infantry. Enrolled at Sistersville; 24; mustered in 20 Dec 1861 at Grafton. Farmer, born Tyler Co., W.Va. Died in Gen'l Hospital, Grafton, W.Va., 10/11 Apr. 1862. [Also incorrectly indexed as Michael Greenfield.] He is buried as Greenfield Michael at Zion Church Cemetery, Friendly, Tyler County. The surname was MICHAEL and Greenfield Michael is found in the 1860 census of Sistersville, Tyler County.

MOORE, JONATHAN - Captain, Company "K" 7th Regiment W.Va. Volunteer Infantry. Mustered in 7 Aug. 1861 at Wheeling; 25 [sic]; commissioned 3 Jan. 1862. Enlisted as Sergeant in Company "C"; detached to raise a company of his own; commissioned as Captain, order of February 3, 1862, to date 1 Nov. 1861; resigned 5 Aug. 1862. [Service Record: Enrolled 7 Aug. 1861 at Sistersville; mustered in Aug. 7, 1861 [Company "C"]; age 35. Ordered to go and recruit for himself... Enrolled in Company "K" 7 Oct. 1861 at Wheeling. Resigned 5 Aug. 1862 by reason of disability.] Jonathan W. Moore died 5 Sept. 1862 at Sistersville, Tyler County, just a month after he left service. He is buried at Moore Cemetery, Friendly, Tyler County. He was born about 1836, the son of John W. and Mazy (White) Moore. Jonathan married Rebecca Susan Urton in 1859 in Tyler County and had two sons, Oaky and John. Jonathan was the brother of Shriver Moore, Captain, Company E, 14th W. Va. Infantry.]

NICHOLS, GEORGE V. - Company "I" 15th Regiment W.Va. Volunteer Infantry. Enrolled at Grafton; 30; mustered in 11 Oct. 1862 at Wheeling. Killed in action 19 Sept. 1864 at Winchester, Va. Sergeant.[Service Record: In 1863, he was detached as a recruiter in Tyler County.] -- George, the son of Ellis Nichols and Martha Hathaway, was found in Tyler County with his parents and siblings in both the 1850 & 1860 census records.

NICHOLS, SILAS H. - Company "K" 7th Regiment W.Va. Volunteer Infantry. Enrolled at Sistersville; 22; mustered in 20 Dec. 1861 at Grafton. Farmer, born Greene Co., Pa. Killed in action 17 Sept. 1862 at Antietam, Md. Corporal. -- Silas was the brother of George V. Nichols who also died in battle.

PRATT, PERRY - Company "E" 14th Regiment W.Va. Volunteer Infantry. Enrolled at Centreville; 33; mustered in 22 Mar. at Wheeling. Farmer, born in Monongalia Co., W.Va. Recruit killed in action at Halltown, Va., 26 Aug. 1864. [Service Record: Wounded in action 26 Aug 1864 near Charlestown, Va.; sent to hospital at Harpers Ferry; died 27 Aug. 1864.] -- Perry Pratt married Hannah Weekley in Tyler County in 1852. They were residents of Tyler County at the time of the 1860 census.

RICE, JESSE - Company "E" 14th Regiment W.Va. Volunteer Infantry. Enrolled at Middlebourne; age 18; mustered in 29 Aug 1862 at Wheeling. Died of disease 6 Feb. 1864, at Cumberland, Md. -- [Service Record: Born in Kentucky.] -- Jesse Rice, 14, born in Kentucky, was living with the Thomas Weekley family in Tyler County at the time of the 1860 census.

UNDERWOOD, FRANCIS M. - Company "G" 6th Regiment W.Va. Volunteer Cavalry, formerly Company "G" 5th Regiment Cavalry. Enrolled at West Union; age 18; mustered in 1 Aug. 1864 at West Union, W.Va. Recruit, died 30 June 1865, in Ritchie Co., W.Va. One roll states he died 23 Jan 1865, in Tyler Co., W.Va. [Service Record: Oct. 1864. Absent sick in Tyler Co. since 21 Sept. 1864. Died at his home in Tyler Co., West. Va. of disease. Born at Tyler County.] -- According to his gravestone at Underwood Cemetery #2 in Tyler County, Francis died 23 Jan 1865. He was the son of James Underwood and Rachel Ash.

UNDERWOOD, LEWIS - Company "E" 14th Regiment W.Va. Volunteer Infantry. Enrolled at Middlebourne; age 34; mustered in 29 Aug 1862 at Wheeling. Died of disease 13 Apr. 1865, at Wheeling, W.Va. [Service Record: Death year also stated as 1864.] -- He had to have died in 1865 because he was was wounded and in hospital at Wheeling 19 Oct 1864. He is buried at Grafton National Cemetery and his death date is stated as 13 Aprl 1865. He was the son of Nancy Johnson and Unknown Underwood. Nancy married John Fletcher in 1832 in Tyler County and Lewis is found with them in both the 1850 and 1860 Tyler County census records.

WELLS, CHARLES - Company "E" 14th Regiment W.Va. Volunteer Infantry. Enrolled at Middlebourne; age 25; mustered in 29 Aug 1862 at Wheeling. Died 6 Nov. 1864, of wounds received in action 3 Sept. 1864. [Service Record: Wounded a Battle of Berryville. Mini ball entered left temporal bone. (Extensive description!) Sent to hospital at Frederick, Md. Admitted to Gen'l Hospital at Grafton 2 Nov 1864. He was married and Lavina Wells was the nearest relative. Death 6 Nov 1864; symptoms of Cerebro Spinal Meningitis.] -- Charles was the son of Benjamin and Mary (Ruffner) Wells. He married Lavina Jane Smith and they were residents of Sistersville, Tyler County, at the time of the 1860 census.

NOTE: Many names of Tyler County Civil War soldiers are inscribed on a monument in Middlebourne. Those who died in service are noted with a *. However, there are conflicts with some of the information about the service dead.

JOHATHON (as spelled on monument) BAKER - Company "M" 6th Regiment W.Va. Infantry. - Jonathan Baker didn't die during the war: Enrolled at West Union; 22; mustered in 16 Nov 1861 at West Union. Mustered out 1 Dec 1864, expiration term of service. Born in Tyler County. He applied for a government pension in 1883 and received Certificate #319576. He died 8 Jan 1913 and is buried at Wilbur Cemetery, Tyler County. A government marker is on his grave, indicating Co. M 6th Inf.

JAMES C. BENNETT - Company "I" 15th Regiment W.Va. Infantry. He enrolled at Elk Fork. He was transferred to Company "I" 10th Regiment and was discharged 28 May 1865. He didn't die until 1898. He applied for a government pension in 1879 and received Certificate #361743.

JOHN R. BOGARD - Company "A" 14th Regiment W.Va. Infantry. Enrolled at West Union; age 42; mustered in 23 Aug 1862 at Wheeling. Captured 9 May 1864 at Cloyd's Mountain, Va. Died of disease 4 Sept. 1864, a prisoner of war. [Service Record: Died of Scorbitus at Andersonville, Ga. 5 Sept. 1864. Had been captured at Greenland Gap, Hampshire Co., 25 Apr 1863 and was released.] - He married Eliza Shinn in Tyler County in 1841, which was possibly the area that became Doddridge County in 1945. He was born in Monongalia County and the family lived on Arnold's Creek in the area that is now Doddridge County. He continued to live in Doddridge County after his marriage. No connection of the soldier to the current Tyler County is found.

JAMES CHRISTEN(Co K, WV 7th Inf. POW) - Only George L. & John Christen/Christian were in Company "K" of the 7th Infantry. James Christen was in Company "C" 15th W.Va. Infantry. Born in Belmont County, Ohio; age 18. He was captured 18 July 1864; died 25 Sept. 1864, at Andersonville, Ga., a prisoner of war.

ALBERT FLETCHER - Company "E" 10th Regiment W.Va. Infantry - Applied for pension 9 Sept 1871 and he received Certificate # 121210. So he didn't die during the war. He also served in the Veterans Reserve Corps.

MICHAEL GREENFIELD, GAR - His name was GREENFIELD MICHAEL and his Service Record, census record and his gravestone confirm that.

WILLIAM W. IRELAND, WV 6 Art Co C - William W. Ireland, as shown above, was in Company F., 1st Regiment W.Va. Light Artillery.

SIMON H. KECK. He was wounded but not killed, although a W.Va. Adjutant General's Record incorrectly states that he died. Company "C" 7th Regiment Volunteer Infantry. Enrolled at Sistersville; 19; mustered in 7 Aug. 1861 at Wheeling. Farmer, born Tyler Co., W.Va. Killed in action at Antietam, Md., 17 Sept, 1862. [Error] According to his Service Record, he was wounded at Antietam 17 Sept. 1862, not killed. He died 28 Mar 1906 in Tyler County and is buried at Williamson Cemetery, Friendly, Tyler County. He applied for a government pension in 1877 and received Certificate #160286.

PIPES, JAMES - Company "E" 14th Regiment Volunteer Infantry. He was wounded, not killed. - Enrolled at Middlebourne; age 21; mustered in 29 Aug 1862 at Wheeling; mustered out 27 June 1865. Wounded in action at Carter's Farm, Va., 20 July 1864. Mustered out at Cumberland. [Service Record: Wounded in action at Winchester 20 July 1864; sent to hospital at Cumberland, Md.] He died 13 Dec 1875 and is buried at Beechwood Cemetery, Centerville, Tyler County. A bronze government marker is on his grave and states his service in Co. "E" 1th W.Va. Inf.
