Lester M. Kerns
Lester M. “Buck” Kerns of Thomas, died on Tuesday, Nov. 17, at the Cortland Nursing Home in Thomas.
Mr. Kerns was born on Nov. 7, 1937 in Bloomery, a son of the late Ward W. and Beatrice Oates Kerns.
Surviving is one sister Esther Stiles of St. George.
A funeral service was held at Giffin Funeral Home in Capon Bridge, on Saturday, Nov. 21, at 2 p.m. Officiating was Pastor Carolyn Martin. Interment followed at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Whitacre, Va.
Aline Kovach
Aline Rose Kovach, 73 of Thomas, passed away Nov. 16 at Garrett Memorial Hospital in Oakland, Md.
She was born May 5, 1936 in Thomas, a daughter of the late Charles Harrison Shaffer Sr. and Vernie Catherine Elborn.
She is survived by her husband Junior Bill Kovach, one son Mark (and Lisa) Owens of Stephen City, Va.; two daughters Sara Jane Kovach of Kerens and Jeannine Kovach Helmick of Hagerstown, Md.; one brother Charlie H. (and Dorothy) Shaffer Jr. of Mich.; ten grandchildren Kristie Aline Owens, Susan Dean Morris, Amanda Leah White, Aaron Dale Whitehair, Samantha Danielle Owens, Ashley Dawn Kerns, Kaila Alexandra Helmick, Tori Elaine Morral, Michael Alan Helmick and Mark Logan Owens; four great-grandchildren Inza Elaine Pacella, Ethan Scott Pacella, Aydin Cole White and Zoe Rose White; and several half-brothers and sisters.
She was preceded in death by one brother Frank Shaffer.
Mrs. Kovach was employed as a secretary for Father Snyder and then retired from the Department of Corrections after 21 ˝ years. She was the treasurer for Mountain Top Library, enjoyed crocheting, ceramics, video games and her family, especially her grandkids. She was an avid Nascar fan.
Friends were received at Hhinkle Funeral Home on Thursday, Nov. 19 from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services were held at Hinkle Funeral Chapel on Friday, Nov. 20 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Charles Arnold officiating. Interment followed in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Hinkle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Harold Walters

Harold S. Walters, 90, of Keyser, died Friday, Nov. 20 at the Memorial Campus of the WMHS, Cumberland, Md.
He was born on Feb.9, 1919 at Davis, a son of the late Edward and Oda (Cosner) Walters. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Curtis Walters.
Mr. Walters was a 1937 graduate of Davis High School and a 1941 graduate of Berea College in Kentucky. He received his Masters Degree in education from Penn State. Mr. Walters was retired as a school teacher for over 32 years, having taught chemistry, physics, math, trigonometry and physical science in Mineral, Tucker and Grant Counties. He also coached baseball and basketball in the schools where he taught as well as Little League baseball.
Very proud of his military service, “Bucky, “ as he was known during his military career, retired after 10 years of service with the rank of Major in the US Air Force after serving with the 73rd Bomb Wing and as a radar navigator during World War II. He served as the fi rst state park naturalist in West Virginia at Blackwater Falls State Park and the nature center there is named after him. He was President of the Faith in Action Food Pantry, member of the Boyce-Houser Post # 41, American Legion, Keyser, Keyser Rotary Club and was a faithful and dedicated member of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years Edie (Forsythe) Walters; three sons John Walters and wife Connie of Ocala, Fla., Robert Walters and wife Carolyn of Morgantown and Stephen Walters and wife Mabsie of Calif.; three daughters Sharon Fox and husband Dana of Morgantown, Jean Molnar and husband Dan of Calif. and Nancy Greene and husband Paul of Los Angeles, Calif.; 11 grandchildren Stephenie Torres, Robert Walters II, Brian Fox, Christen Smith, Julie Attardo, Sarah Shimomura, Rebecca Walters, Derek Molnar, David Greene, Debbie Chu and Angela Nguyan; and three great-grandchildren Victori and Beth Smith and Isaiah Walters.
Friends were received at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Monday, Nov. 23 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Funeral services were conducted at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Davis Street, Keyser, on Tuesday, Nov. 24, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Sally Bartling officiating. Friends were also received at the church one-hour prior to the service. Interment followed in the Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser, where graveside military honors were accorded. The family requests that memorial contributions be directed to the Faith in Action Food Pantry, P.O. Box 1073, Keyser, WV 26726.
