Goldie Evans
Goldie Nora Evans, 91, of Davis, died Feb. 17 at Garrett County Memorial Hospital in Oakland, Md. .
She was born Nov. 15, 1913, in Leadmine, a daughter of the late Foster Hartley and Susie Martin Hartley Mullenax.
Survivors include a brother Anthony W. (and Helen Gail) Mullenax sr. of Salisbury, N.D.; and two sisters Edith Allman of Davis and Alice Marie (Peggy) Morgan of Reading, Pa.
She was preceded in death by three husbands John Gorsuch, Harley Varner and Homer Evans; five brothers Alfred, Lester, Luther, Walter and Gene and a sister Ethel Gay (Tootie).
She was a retired housekeeping employee of Blackwater Falls State Park. She was a member of Davis United Methodist Church and FOE 936 Auxiliary.
Friends were received at Hinkle Funeral Home in Davis on Feb. 18. Funeral services were held on Feb. 19 at Davis United Methodist Church with the REv. James Martin officiating. Interment followed in the Davis Cemetery.
Elizabeth Feller
Elizabeth Ann Gross Feller, 83, died Feb. 12, at Swedish Hospital in Seattle, Wash.
She was born in Thomas, a daughter of the late Samuel Gross and Myrtle Fletcher Gross. On April 15, 1939, at Red House, Md., she was married to Charles LIncoln FEller, who preceded her in death in May 2004.
Survivors include two daughters Charla Wilson of McMinnville, Ore., Elizabeth (Libby) Hagan of Seattle, Wash.; a sister Josephine Purcell of McDonough, N.Y.; seven grandchildren Greg, Ken, Tamara, Candace, Joshua, Christine and Derek; 12 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sisters Virginia Graham, Ruth Lambert and Winifred; and two brothers Cecil and Alton Gross.
She was a graduate of Thomas High School with the class of 1938. During World War II, she volunteered as a plane spotter and worked for Martin Aircraft in Baltimore, Md., as a parts inspector.
Funeral services were held on Feb. 18 at Marlatt Funeral Home in Kent, Wash. Private interment will take place at Clearfield Cemetery in Clearfield, Pa., at a later date.
Rose P. Helmick
Rose Pearl Canfield Nelson Helmick, 91, of Parsons, died Feb. 18, at her home. She had been in her usual health and death was attributed to a heart attack.
She was born March 2, 1913, at the Clover community in Tucker County, a daughter of the late Lorenza L. and Venice Auvil Canfield. She was twice married, first to Ralph Nelson, who preceded her in death. On July 8, 1993, she was married to William “Bill” Helmick, who survives.
Survivors include a son; Robert Ralph Nelson of California; a brother, Clyde Raymond Canfield of Hambleton; three grandsons, Darrell Nelson, Jeffrey Nelson and Mark Nelson; two granddaughters, Terri Ellen Eekhoff and Joleen Ann Nelson, all of California; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Ernest Lee Canfield, Charles Howard Canfield and Clarence Doyle Canfield; and a sister, Anna Grace Stevens.
She attended the schools of Tucker County. She was affiliated with the Eagles and the BPOE of California. She was a Methodist by faith.
Friends were received at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Feb. 22. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. David Fuller officiating. Interment will follow at Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons.
Constance Simmons
Constance Kaye “Connie” Kiernan Simmons, 64, a former resident of Parsons and more recently a resident of Elkins, died Feb. 14, at the Davis Memorial Hospital emergency room. She had been in her usual health and death was attributed to cardiac arrest.
She was born Monday, June 10, 1940, at Clarksburg, a daughter of Bernard Patrick Kiernan, of Elkins and Mildred M. Nye, who preceded her in death. On March 11, 1961, at Red House, Md., she was married to Raymond Keith “Abe” Simmons, who preceded her in death Feb. 26, 1999.
Surviving are three daughters, Rhonda Sue (and Doug) Dye of Jacksonville, Fla., Brenda Kaye Cooper of Winter Springs, Fla., and Diana Lynn “Deedle” (and Gary) Hannah of Beverly; two grandchildren, Thomas “Tad” Allen Dye and Kayelynn Sue Cooper.
She was preceded in death was a son, Michael Keith Simmons.
She was a graduate of Victory High School of Clarksburg with the class of 1957. She was a homemaker and an employee of Wal-Mart.
Friends were received at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Feb. 17. Final rites were conducted at the funeral home parlor on Feb 18, with Pastor Allen Dale Crosten officiating. Interment followed at Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons.
Agnes Sponaugle
Agnes Virginia Bates Sponaugle, 83, of Parsons, died Feb. 14, at Cortland Acres Nursing Home. She had been in declining health and death was attributed to cancer.
She was born Sept. 27, 1921, at Parsons, a daughter of the late Howard Cross and Bessie Raines Cross. She was twice married, first to Lawrence Bates, who preceded her in death. On March 14, 1978, at Oakland, Md., she was married to Ward Sponaugle, who survives at Parsons.
Survivors include six sons, James “Jimmy”
(and Barbara) Bates of St. Louis, Mo., Richard “Dick” (and Barbara) Bates of
New Jersey, Howard “Tubby” (and Bobbie) Bates of Windsor, Va., Larry (and
Linda) Bates of Hambleton, Dennis (and Brenda) Bates of Passadena, Md. and Jack
(and Paula) Bates of Parsons; a daughter, Nancy Louise (and Clyde) Pennington of
North Canton, Ohio; a brother, Robert Cross of Blackman Flats; a sister, Jenny
Wade of Ohio; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul “Bud” Lewis Cross and Ralph
Cross; and four sisters, Ethel Taylor, Helen Cross, Kathleen Housberry and
Evelyn Cuomo..
She attended the schools of Tucker County. She was an employee of the former Tucker County Hospital at Parsons. She attended the Church of God at St. George.
Friends were received at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Feb. 17. Final rites were conducted on Feb. 18 with Pastors Brent Reed and Carolyn Shreve officiating. Interment followed at Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman.
