F. Helena Burger
She is survived by a daughter, Joanne Hughes (and Bert) Green, son, Dr. Jerry R. Burger, Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren, Robert, Roxanne, Ray and Sheila Gorham, Tammy Garrett, Roger and Karen Gorham, Joseph and Anne Burger; and great-grandchildren, Brian, Kristin, Eric, Nicole, Ashley and Joshua.
In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband Vance B. Burger; infant daughter, Nancy Jean Burger; grandson, Rusty Gorham; her siblings, Ira Lease, Patience Harmon, Elwood Lease, Hayden Lease, Regina Harrison and Lawrence Lease.
Graveside services were held Jan. 26 with the Rev. Jeff Winter officiating at the Davis Cemetery.
Maxine Goff Morgan, 83, of Hambleton and Arlington, VA, died Oct. 30, 2001. Death was attributed to complications of diabetes.
Born Oct. 22, 1918 in Hambleton, she was a daughter of the late Paul R. and Beatrice Phillips Goff, former residents of Hambleton. Her husband, John Shewbridge Morgan, whom she married June 14, 1941, died March 1, 1989.
Survivors include a son, John Goff (and Susan) Morgan of Manassas, VA; a duaghter, Pamela Maxine Morgan (and Douglas MacCracken, Arlington; a sister Pauline Goff Burnett of Sterling, VA; a brother, Ray Goff of florida; five grandchildren John Goff Jr. and Steven Robert Morgan and Meagan Beatrice, Bethany Douglas and Cecelia Morgan McCracken.
A 1936 graduate of Washington Lee High School in Arlington, VA, she earned a bachelor's degree in business from Strayer Business College in Washington, DC, and a master's degree in genealogy from The American University, Washington, DC.
Mr. and Mrs. Morgan founded Hambleton Historic Preservation Society in 1976. That organization was changed in 1982 to Tucker County Historical Society. Mrs. Morgan served as president, secretary, editor of the journal; was archivist and museum curator from 1976 to 1990. She was recognized in 1991 by Tucker County Chamber of Commerce as Tucker County Historian.
Mrs. Morgan wrote numerous articles of historic interest for The Advocate. She also researched, wrote and proposed grants for the National Preservation Society.
She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Arlington Historical Society and the National Historical Society.
An active member of her church, she served as Christian Education Director, directed the children's choir , and was a member of the adult choir.
The funeral was held at Arlington Funeral Home with pastor Steve King of Cherrydale Baptist Church officiating. Interment followed in Columbia Gardens. Memorial gifts may be made to Tucker County Historical Society.
Howard O. Hebb ![]()
Howard O. Hebb, 85, of East Flat Rock, NC, died Jan. 12, in Pardee Hospital, NC, following a period of declining health.
He was a native of St. George, a son of the late Jasper L. and Villa White Hebb, and lived in Henderson County for the past 52 years. For 41 years he was married to Gloria Burns Hebb, who died in 1987.
Survivors include his children, Judy (and Bill) Russell, of Homosassa, FL, Robert (and Robin) Hebb of Brevard, Doug (and Karen) Hebb, of Zirconia, Sharon Peck of Buckhannon, and Lee (and Linda) Hebb, Marvin Hebb and Lois (and Greg) Walker, all of Hendersonville; four siblings, Kenneth Hebb, June Hebb and Vonda VanMeter of St. George, and Ardeth Bowling of Oakland; 17 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Hunter Ray Hebb.
He attended Fruitland Baptist Bible Institute and Blue Ridge Community College and was a local homebuilder. He was a member of Upward Baptist Church, where he served for many years as deacon and church trustee. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving with the 91st Bomber Group.
The funeral was held Jan. 15 at Shepherd's Church Street Chapel. The Rev. Susan Henry-Crowe, dean of the chapel and religious life at Emory University, and the Rev. Norman J. Bayne officiated. Burial followed at Shepherd's Memorial Park, with military rites conducted by Hedrick-Rhodes Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5206, Hubert M. Smith American Legion Post 77 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 14.
