Lillian G. Dahmer
Lillian Grimes Dahmer, 100, of Lewisburg, passed away Thursday, Aug. 24,
2006, in The Brier Nursing Home in Ronceverte.
Visitation will be at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg Sunday,
Aug. 27, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., the funeral hour with the Rev. Richard Hutchison
officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery at Marlinton.

Margaret N. Dakan
Margaret Nell Kelly “Peg” Dakan, 87, a patient at Holbrook Nursing
Home in Buckhannon for the past six years, passed away Friday evening, July 28,
2006, in the nursing home following an extended illness.
She was born Nov. 26, 1918, at Elkins, a daughter of the late John Francis Kelly
and Iris Steele Kelly.
On April 26, 1944, at the Grace Episcopal Church in Elkins, she was married to
Joseph Dale Dakan, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Joseph Gorby Dakan of Elkins and John Francis Dakan
of Winchester, Ind.; and one grandson, Joseph Clay “JC” Dakan of Elkins.
Also preceding her in death were two brothers, Jack Flynn Kelly and James Steele
Kelly; and one sister, Virginia Greene Kelly.
Peg was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1936 and was named
West Virginia State Champion Cheerleader in that same year. She was a 4-H All
Star and for several years was a Danforth Scholar to Camp Minnewonka in
Michigan. She attended both Davis & Elkins College and Drake University in
Iowa City, Iowa, and worked as a dental assistant to Dr. Widney prior to her
marriage. She was a member of the PEO. She was an excellent dancer. Peg was a
member of St. Brendan Catholic Church.
Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. today at Tomblyn Funeral Home of
Elkins. A prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel
with Fr. William Anderson as the Presider. On Tuesday morning, Peg will be moved
to St. Brendan Catholic Church where the Liturgy of Christian Burial will be
celebrated at 10 a.m. with Fr. William Anderson presiding. Interment will follow
in St. Brendan Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that
memorial contributions may be made to either St. Brendan Catholic Church, P.O.
Box 2205, Elkins, W.Va. or the National Multiple Sclerosis Association, West

Foster Daniels
Foster Daniels, 90, of Petersburg, died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006, in
Potomac Valley Hospital at Keyser.
The family will receive friends today from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
at Schaeffer Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at
Riverside Church in Dollytown with the Revs. Tommy George and Joseph Eversole
officiating. There will be a military graveside service by the Combined Veteran
Organizations of Grant County and the JROTC. Interment will follow in Goldizen

Paul A. Daniels
Paul A. Daniels, 68, a resident of Gate Lane, Elkins, passed away at
5:05 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2006, at his residence following an extended
illness.
He was born April 18, 1938, at Beverly, a son of the late Thurman C. Daniels and
Violet A. Kisner Daniels.
On Nov. 23, 1973, in Virginia, he was married to Nancy L. Bennett, who survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Rick Daniels and Gregg Daniels, both of
Harrisonburg, Va., and Darin Daniels of San Diego, Calif.; one daughter, Lynette
Daniels Trent and husband, Scott, of Buckhannon; two stepchildren, Tim Harris
and wife, Shelly, of Wesley Chapel, Fla., and Janet Tice and husband, David, of
Beverly. Also surviving are four brothers, Thurman A “June” Daniels and
wife, Lois, of Beverly, Charles Daniels and wife, Mary Lou, of Flemington, Alvin
Daniels of Moscow, Pa., and Kenny Daniels and wife, Inez, of Elberton, Ga.;
three sisters, Norma Hannah of Elkins, Betty Merriot and husband, Perry, of
Ripley and Carol Sines of Glenmoore Loop; and eight grandchildren, Amber Tice,

In addition to his parents, two sisters and four brothers preceded him in death.
Mr. Daniels served in the U.S. Army for three years and for three years in the
Army Reserves. He worked in auto body repair and was last employed by Hinzman
Auto Repair for 13 years. He enjoyed reading, word puzzle books, card games and
working jigsaw puzzles on the computer to pass away his days during his illness.
He was a member of Beverly United Methodist Church.

Mabel A. Danza
Mabel Arbogast Day Danza, 82, a resident of Argillite, Ky., and a former
resident of Melbourne, Fla., departed this life Saturday, March 11, 2006, in Our
Lady of Bellefonte Hospital at Russell, Ky.
She was born Friday, Nov. 16, 1923, at Whitmer, a daughter of the late Ona and
Junie Long Arbogast.
She was twice married. First to Harry Day, who preceded her in death June 20,
1967, and second to James Danza, who preceded her in death during 1994.
Surviving are one son, Steve Day and wife, Sharon, of Argillite, Ky.; one
stepson, Robert Danza and wife, Terry, of Melbourne, Fla.; one stepdaughter,
Shirley Ohara and husband, Charles, of Maryland; two sisters, Gwen Williams and
husband, Paul, of Argillite, Ky., and Cheryl Williams and husband, Dwayne, of
Annapolis, Md.; and grandson, Shane Day of Argillite, Ky. Several
stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren also survive.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Robert, William, Franklin and Eldon
Arbogast; and four sisters, Genevieve Clifton, Violet Alcorn, Linda Newton and
infant, Ruby.
She attended the schools of Tucker and Randolph counties. She was a retired
custodian for Anne Arundell County Public Schools in Maryland.
The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons
Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home
parlor Wednesday, March 15, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Brent Reed will officiate and

George Darden Jr.
George Edward Darden Jr., 82, a resident of Newnan, Ga., passed away
peacefully at home Monday, Oct. 16, 2006. Mr. Darden had made his home for the
past eight years with his son, Bob, and wife, Barbara, since the passing of his
wife.
He was born July 29, 1924, at Elkins, a son of the late George Edward Darden Sr.
and Joyce Jeanette Darden.
On July 28, 1945, at Buckhannon, he was married to the former Norma Carroll
Cockerill, who preceded him in death Feb. 28, 1999.
Surviving are three sons, Robert Darden and wife, Barbara, of Newnan, Ga.,
Thomas Darden and wife, Nancy, of Fairmont, and James Darden and wife, Cindy, of
Jackson, Ga.
A daughter, Carroll Darden Clason and husband, Wayne, of Fredericksburg, Va.; a
brother, Ralph Darden and wife, Myrna, of Levittown, Pa.; seven grandchildren,
five stepgrandchildren, four great-grandchildren, 18 stepgreat-grandchildren and
one stepgreat-great-grandchild also survive.
Also preceding him in death was a sister, Jane Darden Brown.
George attended the schools of Randolph County and was a graduate of Elkins High
School. He joined the U.S. Army and served in the European Theatre during World
War II. He was a life member of H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion where he
served as post commander, District 29 commander and was a member of the color
guard of the West Virginia Highlanders, then sponsored by H.W. Daniels Post 29.
For many years, he served on the state board committees of the West Virginia
American Cancer Society and, in earlier years, was active as a volunteer in the
Mountain State Forest Festival.
Mr. Darden’s request for cremation was honored. The family will hold a
memorial service at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 20, at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins.
The Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley will officiate and a private graveside service
will follow. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to
VistaCare Hospice, 1585 Highway 34 East, Newnan, Ga. 30265 in memory of Mr.

Homer Daugherty
Homer Junior Daugherty, 83, a resident of Union community, Philippi,
passed away Sunday, Sept. 17, 2006, at the home of his nephew, Wyane Daugherty.
He was born Sept. 21, 1922, at Union community, a son of the late Charles H. and
Gertrude C. Pitman Daugherty.
Surviving are one sister-in-law, Margaret “Peggy” Daugherty of Union
community; three nephews, Wyane L. and wife, Susan Daugherty, of Mt. Liberty
community, Dennis E. and wife, Marlene Daugherty, of Philippi and David W.
Daugherty of Ohio; and great-nephews and great-nieces, loved as grandchildren,
Timothy D. Daugherty, Mike and Karen Daugherty, Amanda (Daugherty) and William
Marion, Ryan and Brogan Daugherty, Andrew Daugherty, Addalisha (Daugherty)
Risser, Gregory Daugherty, Dora Daugherty, Darrell Daugherty and Daniel
Daugherty.
Mr. Daugherty was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold H. and Robert L.
Daugherty; one niece, Becky Daugherty; and one nephew, Dennis Daugherty.
Mr. Daugherty was an active farmer until his illness and served in the U.S. Army
during World War II in combat Veteran 3rd Armor DIV. He served in the Pacific
and European theaters. Mr. Daugherty was a member of Union Church of Christ.
Friends will be received at Wright Funeral Home at 216 N. Walnut St. in Philippi
today from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., the service hour
with Evangelist R.D. Ice officiating. Interment will follow in Pitman Cemetery
with the honour guard of American Legion Post 44 conducting military rites.

Ethel N. Davidson
Ethel N. Davidson, 88, of the Gaines Community of Rock Cave, died
Saturday, June 17, 2006, at her home.
She was born Nov. 30, 1917, at Eden, a daughter of the late Okey Thomas Davidson
and Nora Susan Morris Davidson.
She is survived by two sisters, Irene Tracy of Buckhannon and Inzie Pisarski of
Baden, Pa.; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews;
great-great-nieces and great-great nephews.
Also preceding her in death were five brothers, Charles “Curge” Davidson,
Ronald Davidson, Darrol Davidson, Larry Davidson and Nelson Davidson; and one
sister, Betty Gum.
She was a registered nurse and regularly attended Chapel Hill United Methodist
Church. She graduate in 1946 from St. Mary’s Nursing School in Huntington. She
retired from Louis A. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center in
Clarksburg and St. Joseph’s Hospital of Buckhannon, where she was a RN in the
emergency room.
Friends will be received from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Poling-St. Clair Funeral
Home. She will lie in state at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church Tuesday from
1 p.m. to 2 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. Gary Stackpole will officiate and
interment will follow in Salem Ridge Church Cemetery at Gaines. Poling-St. Clair

Mrs. Bonnie Sue Bangs Davis, 53, a resident of Elkins, passed away at
her residence Sept. 29, 2006 following an extended illness.
She was born Nov. 5, 1952, at Baltimore, Md., a daughter of the late Lloyd
Osborne Bangs and Charlotte Winifred Delphy Bangs Ball.
She is survived by her husband, Ronald Edward Davis Sr.; her stepfather, Richard
Ball of Elkins: and three sons, Randy Wayne Davis of Elkins, Ronald Edward Davis
Jr. of Shinnston and Ricky Earl Davis of Fresno, Calif. Three brothers, Wayne
Bangs of Baker, La., Michael Bangs of Littlestown, Pa., and Robby Tighe of
Westminster, Md.; two sisters, Darlene Patterson of Maryville, Tenn., and
Kimberly Forney of Littlestown, Pa.; and 11 grandchildren also survive.
Preceding her in death were two brothers, Timmy Tighe and Terry Tighe.
Bonnie was employed by Long John Silvers for 16 years prior to becoming
disabled.
At Bonnie’s request, her remains were cremated. A memorial service will be

Edythe M. Davis, 88, of Cass, passed away Thursday, March 9, 2006, in
Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Evangeline C. Davis
Evangeline C. “Polly” Davis, 86, died Friday, March 17, 2006, in
Allen Hospital at Waterloo, Iowa.
She was born March 1, 1920, at Armstrong, Iowa, the daughter of the late Jacob
and Anna Marie Murray Reining.
On Aug. 7, 1942, at Spencer, Iowa, she was united in marriage to John Thomas
Davis, who preceded her in death Dec. 18, 1967.
John and Polly lived in Louisiana for several years before going to Iowa in
1956. Polly was a licensed practical nurse and cared for people in three states
for 17 years, retiring in 1982.
Her memory is cherished be five sons, John (Pat) of Petal, Miss., William of
Tucson, Ariz., Danny of Waterloo, Iowa, Peter of Valley Bend and Andrew (Judy)
of Waterloo, Iowa; two daughters, Jean (Dan) Steen and Linda Roberts, all of
Waterloo, Iowa; one brother, Ralph Reining of Laurens, Iowa; three sisters,
Louise Long of Pueblo West, Colo., Alice (Charles) Barnes of Hamilton, Texas and
Virginia Holmes of Tucson, Ariz.; 19 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death were one daughter, Mary; one brother, George; and
three sisters, Margaret Winters, Mary Gangestead and Shirley Olmstead.
Funeral services were Tuesday, March 21, at Parrott & Wood Chapel of
Memories in Waterloo, Iowa. Pastor Earl Warstler officiated and interment

Evelyn Coleman Davis, 47, a resident of Pickens, died Tuesday, Feb. 21,
2006, in Davis Memorial Hospital at Elkins.
She was born Jan. 22, 1959, at Beckley, a daughter of the late Cecil Gordan and
Trecie Elaine Lough Coleman.
Surviving are her former husband, Gale Davis of Pickens; three children, Joshua
Copella of Cumberland, Md., James L. Copella and Carrie Sue Davis, both of
Pickens; three brothers, Cecil J. Coleman of Webster Springs, John M. Coleman of
Pickens and E. Robert Coleman and wife, Sherri, of Clear Springs, Md.; four
sisters, Cecelia Smith and husband, Marty, of Pickens, Carol Poyner and husband,
Daniel, of Boonesboro, Md., Jeanne Lizzi and husband, Philip, of Deptford, N.J.,
and Janet Schultz and husband, John, of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and a special friend,
Kenneth Wilson of Pickens.
She was a homemaker and member of Pickens Baptist Church.
The viewing will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Tomblyn-Whitescarver
Funeral Home. On Friday, Feb. 24, she will be moved to Pickens Baptist Church
where she will lie in state from noon to 1 p.m., the funeral hour, with the Rev.

Glenn W. Davis
Glenn Wilbur Davis, 84, a resident of Easy Street, Elkins, departed this
life early Tuesday morning, Sept. 19, 2006, in Davis Memorial Hospital. He had
been in declining health.

Glenn W. Davis
Glenn Wilbur Davis, 84, a longtime resident of Oak Hill, and for the
past three years, a resident of Easy Street in Elkins, departed this life early
Tuesday morning, Sept. 19, 2006, in Davis Memorial Hospital after an extended
illness.
He was born Friday, June 30, 1922, at Mount Hope, a son of the late Slyvanius L.
Davis Sr. and Ada Mae Swift Davis.
On April 29, 1943, at Mount Hope, he was married to the former Helen Lucille
Blake, who preceded him in death on Nov. 30, 2002.
Surviving him are one son, Glenn Swift Davis and wife, June L., of Elkins; and
two grandchildren, Allison M. Davis and Andrew G. Davis.
He is the last surviving member of his immediate family having been preceded in
death by one brother, Slyvanius L. Davis Jr.
He attended Mount Hope High School, served with the U.S. Marine Corps during
World War II, worked as a surveyor for New River Coal Co., sold mining equipment
for Long-Airdox Co. and Jeffrey and Owens Co., and was the president of Thomas
Steel at Princeton at the time of his retirement. He was a member of Mount Hope
Presbyterian Church and Oak Hill Masonic Lodge.
Mr. Davis’ request for cremation was honored and a memorial service will be

Nada R. Davis
Nada Ruth Davis, 88, a resident of Ellamore, died Saturday, April 15,
2006, at her home under the care of St. Joseph’s Hospice Care of Buckhannon.
She was born Nov. 10, 1917, at Ellamore, a daughter of the late Gordon Ellis
Lamb and Grace Hornbeck Lamb. She was the last surviving member of her immediate
family.
On April 12, 1948, she was married to Wilford Lorn Davis, who preceded her in
death Jan. 31, 2004.
Surviving are two daughters, Katherine “Cissy” Wilcox of Ellamore and JoAnn
Davis of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; five sons Robin Davis of Elkins, Joseph “Joe”

E.H. Hunter Davis
Dr. Ernest Howard Hunter Davis, also known simply as Hunter Davis, was
born in Philadelphia, Pa., Aug. 31,1924 and died in Pittsburgh, Pa., Oct. 28,
2006.
He served in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant in World War II. He earned his
bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and Ph.D from the University of Pennsylvania.
He was on the All-American Soccer Team in 1942. He taught freshmen level English
at Kent State University and was an associate professor of English at Davis &
Elkins College from 1959 to 1969. He started the soccer team at D&E and was
presented with a life time achievement award from Davis & Elkins Alumni Soccer
Council in 2001. He also served as an adviser to a campus literary magazine and
a campus fraternity at D&E. He then taught English at Slippery Rock University
for 34 years from 1969 to 2004, where he supervised the establishment of the
Writing Center and was coordinator of freshman English and advisor to the rugby
team. Hunter Davis was active in the Elkins Community Theater that later became
known as The Old Brick Playhouse. He was an enthusiastic member of the Polecats.
His message was, “Don’t worry, be happy, enjoy life.”
Hunter is lovingly remembered by his six children, in birth order, Louisa Rise
of Goshen, Ohio, Sydney Davis of Santa Fe, N.M., Katy McClane of Dubai, UAE and
Elkins, Virginia Evan Davis of Lilburn, Ga., Nate Davis of Elkins and Hunter
Davis of Slippery Rock, Pa.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Deborah McCall Spooner, mother of
Louisa and Sydney.
He is survived by his second wife, Joan Crawford, mother of Katy, Evan, Nate and
Hunter; and third wife, Pamela Segula Davis. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren
and three great- grandchildren.
A memorial/wake is planned for Dr. E.H. Hunter Davis at Raven Ring Island,
Gladwin on Saturday, Nov. 25, at 3 p.m. From 21 Nov 2006.

Alma J. Day
Alma Jean "Emms/Sis" Day, 72, a resident of the Crystal Springs
community, Elkins, passed away at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 18, 2006, in
Monongalia General Hospital, under the loving care of the staff at the hospital.
She had been in failing health since June and a patient of the hospital since
July 6, 2006.
Born Feb. 27, 1934, at Bemis, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Blanche
Roy Clayton.
She was a loving and devoted wife to her husband of 52 years, Roger O'Riley Day,
who survives. They would have celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary on Sept.
9 of this year.
In addition to her husband, she was also a loving and devoted mother to three
daughters, Tracie "Ruth" Dayanco and Brenda Bagshaw Sauzer, both of
Elkins, and April Day of Geneva, Ohio; and a son, Dennis Day of Chardon, Ohio.
Also surviving are a brother, Sebert "Bud" Clayton; 11 grandchildren,
Waylon, Denny, Casey, Codey, Crystal, Lukas, Moriah, Sunni, Dana, Lacey and
Danny; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and a host friends.
Preceding her in death besides her parents were a daughter, Deborah Rickers; a
granddaughter, Miranda Bagshaw; four brothers, Jim, Adam, Earl and Robert
Clayton; four sisters, Opal White, Hazel Wildman, Mabel Ketterman and Geneva
White.
"Emms/Sis" loved country music and sang for several years with Alma
Jean and the Smokey Mountain Clan performing in and around the Cleveland, Ohio,
area. She worked as a home health aide for the late Virginia McCallister and
Rebecca Marstiller. "Emms/Sis" never met a stranger or turned anyone
away, she gave freely of herself if they needed her and always found time to sit
down and talk with you. Somehow, she found the goodness in people that everyone
else seemed to overlook. She loved yard sales, thrift shops, playing cards and
especially bingo. Also, a NASCAR fan, Jeff Gordon was her favorite driver. She
had a wonderful and lively sense of humor and was always fun to be around. She
cherished her family and friends and loved spending time with them. She touched
many lives, and will be greatly missed, but will remain in the hearts of those
who loved her forever. May she rest in peace until we meet again.
Friends will be received from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at
F.E. Runner Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be conducted from the
Runner Chapel Sunday, July 23, at 3 p.m. The Rev. Marcie Lewis will officiate.

Monday, March 27, 2006, in Community Hospital.
He was born Jan. 13, 1938, at Dartmore, the son of Harry E. Day Sr. and Dorothy
Virginia Hannisfan Day.
Mr. Day was a member of the United Auto Workers and the Bogle Ridge Hunt Club in
West Virginia. He was retired from Navistar International.
Survivors include his loving companion, Gerldine Marie Day of Springfield; one
son and daughter-in-law, Richard Paul and Sarah Day of South Charleston; one
daughter, Annamarie Day of Springfield; four grandchildren, Edward Day, Cristal
(Matthew) Machabee, William Metcalf and April Metcalf; four sisters, Rose
(Robert) Kelley of West Virginia, Lucille (John) Frock of Springfield, Ella
“Rene” Phillips, Carolyn (Jerry) Carr of West Virginia, a brother, David
(Debbie) Day of West Virginia; sister-in-law, Shirley Day of Pennsylvania;

and Nova Weese Lantz.
On Nov. 11, 1947, he was married to the former Caroldeen B. Chenoweth, who

Hill, Md.; nine grandchildren, David Powers, Michael Barkley, Leslie Houghton,
Howie Dean, Joshua Dean, Shania Lewis, Aaron Gainer, Allison LaRosa and Patrick
LaRosa; seven great-grandchildren; dear friends, Dr. and Mrs. Farukh Khan; a
“special granddaughter,” Farah Khan; and Edgar and Millie Gainer.
Preceding him in death besides his parents are one daughter, Shirley J.
“Jeannie” Gainer; and four half brothers.
Mr. Dean had worked for the Pepsi Cola Bottling Co. for several years before
moving to Buckhannon in 1963, when he began working at the Purity Bread Co.
until his retirement. He loved reading and spending time with his family,
especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mr. Dean’s request for cremation was honored. In his memory, a private
gathering of family and close friends will be conducted at a later date. The

Linger DeBarr.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Blaine DeBarr.
He was a social worker for the Department of Health and Human Resources. He
attended First Baptist Church of Buckhannon and was a member of Frank B.
Bartlett Post 7 American Legion and Pringle Tree Chapter 5 Disabled American
Veterans. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946 during World War II. He
was a 1940 graduate of Buckhannon-Upshur School and a 1949 graduate of Alderson
Broaddus College.

Robert Darrell Demastes, 66, of Rock Cave, the Gaines community, died

He was born July 7, 1940, at Gaines, a son of the late Pearlie Franklin and
Helen Lea Lynch Demastes.
He was united in marriage, on Sept. 2, 1960, to Lona Belle Woody Demastes, who
survives.

of Buckhannon, David Demastes of New Jersey, Billy Demastes of Gaines and Brian
Demastes of Alton; two daughters, Pearl Moore of Holly Grove and Brenda Lee of

On May 22, 1941, in Maryland, he was married to the former Louise Taylor, who

Chelsea, Mich.; one daughter, Marsha Denny Evans of Gainesville, Fla.; one
brother, Ed Hutchison of Wilmington, N.C.; one sister, Dorothy Riggleman of

Surviving are one daughter, Helen Deschenes Hutchins of Beverly, Mass.; one son,
Dr. Raney James Deschenes and wife, Jennifer, of Cape May Court House, N.J.; one
brother, Clair Snyder and wife, Irene, of Wooster, Ohio; her dear aunt, Madge
Huffman of Coalton; five grandchildren, Suzanne, Gregg, Gary, Jennifer and
Jessica; and two great-granddaughters, Caroline and Reilly.
Rita worked for the Grindle family at Elkins while attending and graduating
Elkins High School. She met her husband while he was a veteran of the U.S. Army
and stationed nearby. They then moved to Salem, Mass., where she worked as a
utility worker for Sylvania and raised her family. She was known by many for her
great personality and her quick sense of humor. She loved to garden, cook and
spend time with her family. She then retired with her husband and returned to
West Virginia. They spent many years together enjoying their retirement while
maintaining her family farm in Adolph. They were also recognized by their
friends and neighbors for their beautiful flower gardens and detailed
landscaping.

Burnetta A. DeVore
Burnetta Arnold DeVore, 96, a resident of the Cortland Acres Nursing
Home at Thomas, departed this life Saturday afternoon, Jan. 14, 2006, at the
nursing home.
She was born Monday, Feb. 22, 1909, at Barton, Md., a daughter of the late Jesse
Arnold and Amanda Kyle Arnold. She was married to Robert J. “Bob” DeVore, who
preceded her in death Dec. 13, 1984.
Surviving are one nephew, Bob Nolan and wife, Karen, of Falling Waters.
She is the last surviving member of her immediate family having been preceded in
death by two sisters, Evelyna Nolan and Catherine Arnold.
She attended the schools of Barton, Md., and she was a graduate of Frostburg
State University. She was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church at
Parsons, where she played the organ for many years. She was a schoolteacher for
many years having taught at Kempton, Md., grade schools and for the Tucker
County Board of Education. After her retirement, she along with her husband
owned and operated the former B&B Clothing Store in Parsons. During 2005, she
received an award for being the oldest living graduate from Frostburg State
University. She enjoyed playing the piano and organ.

from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. On Wednesday, Jan. 18, Mrs. DeVore will be moved to Our

Maurice E. Digman
Maurice E. “Joe” Digman, 76, a resident of 518 Yokum St., Elkins,
passed away Monday afternoon, Aug. 14, 2006, at his home.
He was born Aug. 19, 1929, at Parsons, a son of the late Joseph F. and Cora
Ellen Phillips Digman.
On Feb. 20, 1965, at Kerens, he was married to Martha Canfield Digman, who
survives in Elkins.
Also surviving are a son, Jerry Digman and wife, Lisa, of Elkins; two
grandchildren, Lauren Ashley and Jennifer Emily Digman; and a grandson to arrive
in October. Several nieces and nephews, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Ed (Ida Mae)
Swecker, and brother-in-law, Leslie Sewell Canfield and wife, Jo Ann, also
survive.
Also preceding him in death were five sisters, Vonda Day, Ethyl McCauley, Evelyn
Feaster, Deloris Vint and Regina Vanscoy; and a brother, Forrest Digman.
Mr. Digman attended the schools of Randolph County and graduated from Elkins
High School with the class of 1949. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and
was employed for many years by the West Virginia Department of Highways retiring
in 1988. He was a member of Israel United Methodist Church, H.W. Daniels Post 29
American Legion and Randolph County Senior Center.

Karen Ruth Allen Dixon, 59, a resident of Parsons, departed this life
Tuesday morning, Aug. 29, 2006, at her home.
She was born Oct. 30, 1946, at Covington, Ky., a daughter of the late James
Allen, who preceded her in death in 1988 and Lillian Ruth McGlone, who survives
at Indianapolis, Ind.
On May 18, 1969, at Oakland, Md., she was married to Robert Allen Shupp Sr., who
survives.
Also surviving are one son, Robert Allen “Bobby” Shupp Jr. of Parsons; two
daughters, Kelly Ruth Osborn and fiance, Stephen Lee Church, of Hendricks and
Lillian Dawn Shupp of North Vernon, Ind.; two brothers, James Robert Allen and
wife, Patricia, of Greenwood, Ind. and Donald Edward Allen and wife, Cheryl, of
Indianapolis, Ind.; four sisters, Dawn Scott and husband, Dan, of St.
Petersburg, Fla., Trina Anslow and husband, Michael, of Hatsfield, Pa., Joy
Waybright of Elkins and Patti Prater of Columbus, Ind.; and two grandsons,
Anthony Scott Shupp and Robby Allen-Lee Shupp.
Preceding her in death were one son, James Edward Shupp; and one sister, Jackie
Steivers.
She attended various schools, having been in a military family. She was employed
as a cook in the restaurant business. She enjoyed her animals, her plants and
crochet. She had the greatest love for her grandsons.

Betty Joe Long Williams Donaldson, 76, of Buckhannon, died Friday, Sept.
15, 2006 at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
She was born Oct. 21, 1929 in Upshur County, a daughter of the late Harvey and
Cemantha Hyre Long.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, George Williams, and by her
second husband, Edward Donaldson.
She is survived by two brothers; French and wife, Lois Long of French Creek and
Fred Long of Buckhannon. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded by five sisters, Blanche Fleming, Pearl Helmick, Vera
Smallridge, Ruth Criss and Xenna Carpenter and three brothers, Harry, Cecil and
Glen Long.
Betty was an avid fan of music. She was a methodist by faith.

Vera E. Douglas
Vera E. Douglas, 95, a former resident of First Street in Elkins and a
patient in Barbour County Good Samaritan Center for the past 12 years, passed
away Monday evening, March 6, 2006, in Davis Memorial Hospital.
She was born March 31, 1910, at Shawnee, Wash., a daughter of the late Boyd
Dickenson Bishop and Olive May Bishop Douglas.
She moved back to Elkins with her family when she was very young. Vera’s two
older sisters and three younger brothers preceded her in death, Ethel Leigh
(Douglas) Butcher, Neva Rebecca (Douglas) Bibey, Richard Douglas (died at
birth), Boyd Clark Douglas and Paul Eugene Douglas.
Vera is survived by her sister-in-law, Alma May (Keller) Douglas of Elkins and
the following nieces and nephews, Sharon (Bibey) Cameron and husband, Dick, Don
Bibey and wife, Gwen, Denzil Bibey and wife, Jerri, Dorothy Douglas and Sharon
(Douglas) Whitecotton and husband, Louis, all of Wheeling, Margie (Butcher)
Lovett and husband, Bob, and Tom Hinzman, of Weston, LaVaughn Wood of Berlin,
Md., Phil Douglas and wife, Patricia, of Williamsburg, Va., Sandra (Douglas)
Weaving and husband, Bill, of Downingtown, Pa., and Pamela Sue Douglas of
Elkins; and many great- and great-great-nephews and nieces.
Vera graduated from Elkins High School in 1929 and started working prior to her
graduation at Mr. Alex Golberg’s Department Store as the bookkeeper. Later,
Vera was the executive assistant and bookkeeper for Goldberg Real Estate, where
she worked until her retirement. Vera was kind, caring and devoted to her family
and friends. She devoted herself totally to the care of her aging parents until
their deaths. Vera loved participating in church activities at the Goff Street
Church of Christ in Elkins. Vera also thoroughly enjoyed playing golf and
traveling.
Friends may call from noon until 2 p.m. Friday, March 10, at Tomblyn Funeral

Roy Keith Dowell, 77, of Route 5, Buckhannon, died Thursday, Jan. 5,
2006, at 5:05 p.m. at his home.
He was born Dec. 29, 1928, at Spruce Fork, a son of the late William Lewis
Dowell and Bessie Jane Corathere Dowell.
Mr. Dowell was united in marriage on Dec. 21, 1947, to the former Mary Lou Queen
who survives at Buckhannon.
Also surviving are one son, Jonathan Keith and wife, Idella Dowell, of
Buckhannon; two daughters, Sharon Kay Dattilo of Fairfax, Va., and Janet Sue and
husband, David Howes, of Eagle Rock, Va.; nine grandchildren, Jason Keith Dowell

Melbourne, Fla., Holly Hitt of Buckhannon, Victoria Forrest of Leesburg, Va.,
Sharonna Dattilo of Fairfax, Va., Erin Howes of Eagle Rock, Va., Addie Lou
Landis of Buckhannon, and Mary Dattilo of Fairfax, Va.; 12 great-grandchildren;
two brothers, Howard Dowell and James Dowell both of Buckhannon; two sisters,

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Myers Dowell and
Page Dowell; and one sister, Nora Smith.
Mr. Dowell was a coal miner.

Mary E. DuBois, 80, a resident of Huttonsville where she made her home
with her daughter, Phyllis Yokum and husband Jim, passed away Tuesday, May 23,
2006 at 8:45 p.m. at Mon General Hospital in Morgantown where she had been a
patient for the past six months.
Born Aug. 29, 1925 at Cumberland County, North Carolina, she was the daughter of
the late John N. Harrell and Blanche Cashwell Harrell.
On Feb. 5, 1948, she was united in marriage to James Edward “Jim” DuBois,
who preceded her in death on Oct. 27, 1995.
She is survived by one daughter, Phyllis Yokum and husband, Jim of Huttonsville;
one sister, Ruth Varner of Burlington, N.C.; and one brother, Ken Harrell and
Edna Ruth of Florida; three grandchildren, Michelle Yokum, Rachel DuBois and
Dalton James Yokum; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. DuBois was preceded in death by one son, James “Ed” DuBoise; one
sister, Barbara Moody; and two brothers, Stanley and Claude “Bill” Harrell.
Mrs. DuBois was a homemaker. In North Carolina, she was known for taking care of
foster children and sharing her love for them. She was a Presbyterian by faith.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association in
Mary’s name.
At the request of the deceased, the remains will be cremated.

Vada Brown Duffield, 87, a resident of Route 1, Beverly, passed away
Monday, Jan. 2, 2006, in the emergency department of Davis Memorial Hospital.
She was born June 12, 1918, in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Albert
Brown and Artie Suttle Brown.
She was married to James Ralph Duffield, who preceded her in death May 24, 1994.
She is survived by one son, James R. Duffield and his wife, Patty, of Dacula,
Ga.; two brothers, Shirley J. Brown of Silver Springs, Md., and Rector S. Brown
of Winchester, Va.; and one sister, Vesta Stalnaker of Parkersburg. Three
grandchildren, Dawn Steel of Suwannee, Ga., Deborah Doll of Frederick, Md., and
Michael Duffield of Roswell, Ga.; and eight great- grandchildren also survive.
Two brothers, Sheridan G. Brown and Sherman L. Brown, also preceded her in
death.
Mrs. Duffield was a former employee of G.C. Murphy Co. of Elkins and was retired
from Campbell’s Market of Beverly. She was a member of Beverly United
Methodist Church.

Cecil Claude Dulaney, 81, a resident of Pickens, died, Wednesday, Nov.
15, 2006, in Louis A. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center in
Clarksburg.
He was born Aug. 4, 1925, at Pickens, a son of the late Cecil C. and Elsie
Betler Dulaney.
Surviving are two brothers, Charles O. Dulaney and Edward R. Dulaney of Pickens;
three sisters, Margaret A. Haught of Clarksburg, Ruth “Tommi” Spears of
Fairmont and Mrs. Harry “Frieda” Drummond of Oakland, Md.; 23 nieces and
nephews, 33 great-nieces and great-nephews, and 27 great-great-nieces and
great-great-nephews.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, William E. Dulaney of Dayton,

He was retired from General Motors Corp. Chevrolet of Ohio and from D&H
Electric of Buckhannon. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in
Europe, Africa and the Mideast.

William E. Dulaney, 63, of Dayton, Ohio, and formerly of Pickens, went
home to be with the Lord Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006, in Hospice of Dayton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Elsie Dulaney.
He is survived by Sandra, his loving wife of 42 years; his children, Angela
Dulaney Sharp, Matthew and wife, Sheri Dulaney; grandchildren, Seth and Joshua
Sharp and Cody Dulaney; brothers, Cecil, Charles and Edward Dulaney; sisters,
Margaret Haught and Ruth Shears, both of West Virginia and Frieda Drummond of

William served our country in the U.S. Navy. He retired from Chrysler Corp. of

Mr. Gail Edward Dumire, 81, a former resident of the Chenoweth Creek
Road and a patient in Elkins Regional Convalescent Center, passed away Wednesday

He was born Oct. 5, 1924, at Fairmont, a son of the late Shiloh and Susan Bosley
Dumire.
On Nov. 25, 1946, at Monterey, Va., he was married to Vonda Jane “Bonnie”
Kennedy Dumire, who survives in Elkins Regional Convalescent Center.
Also surviving are a son, Edward R. Dumire and wife, “Ginny,” of Beverly;
and a daughter, Martha S. Turner and husband, David, of Elkins. A grandson, Tim
Dumire of Beverly; granddaughters, Katherine “Katie” Martin of Buckhannon
and Michelle “Shelly” Hise of Newnam, Ga.; great-granddaughters, Chelsa Hise
and Josalynn Hise of Newnam, Ga.; and great-grandson, Tristen Dumire of Beverly
also survive.
Also preceding him in death were three brothers and one sister.
Mr. Dumire was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1941 and was
employed as a weight enforcement officer for the state of West Virginia prior to
his retirement. He was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Navy and
participated in the invasion of Normandy at Omaha Beach. He was a member of
Elkins Lodge No. 108 AF & AM where he served as past master, a member of
Chapter 35 Royal Arch Masons, Pilgrim Commandery No. 21 and the Knights of
Templar.
A graveside service will be at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at Elkins Memorial
Gardens. The Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley will officiate and interment will follow.

Vonda Jane “Bonnie” Dumire, 78, a resident of Chenoweth Creek Road
and a patient in Elkins Regional Convalescent Center, passed away Thursday
afternoon, Sept. 14, 2006, in the Convalescent Center.

Vonda J. Dumire
Vonda Jane “Bonnie” Dumire, 78, a resident of Chenoweth Creek Road
and a patient in Elkins Regional Convalescent Center, passed away Thursday
afternoon, Sept. 14, 2006, in the Convalescent Center.
She was born June 25, 1928, at Beverly, a daughter of the late Merle B. and
Martha Harris Kennedy.
On Nov. 25, 1946, at Monterey, Va., she was married to Gail Edward Dumire, who
preceded her in death on Sept. 6, 2006.
Surviving are a son, Edward Dumire and wife, “Ginny,” of Beverly; one
daughter, Martha Sue Turner and husband, David, of Elkins; one grandson, Tim
Dumire of Beverly; granddaughters, Kathleen “Katie” Martin of Buckhannon and
Michelle “Shelly” Hise of Newnam, Ga.; great-granddaughters, Chelsa Hise and
Josalynn Hise of Newnam, Ga.; and great-grandson, Tristen Dumire of Beverly.
Also preceding her in death was a brother, Harry Richard Kennedy; and a sister,
Helen Marie Louk.
Mrs. Dumire attended the schools of Randolph County and was employed by Wallace
Bakery, G.C. Murphy Co. and Garden Fresh Market at the time of her retirement.
She was a member of Beverly United Methodist Church.
There will be no visitation. A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept.
17, at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. The Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley will
officiate and interment will follow in Elkins Memorial Gardens, formerly the
IOOF Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to
Randolph County Senior Center, Fifth Street and Railroad Avenue, Elkins, W.Va.

Jane G. Duncan
Jane Gay Duncan, formerly of Buckhannon and recently of Parkersburg,
died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2006, at home.
Jane was born March 21, 1947, the daughter of Gallatin Pettus Gay and Grace
Mauzy Gay.
Jane is survived by her daughter, Stephanie Michelle Jack of Parkersburg; and a
grandson, Gallatin Connor Jack, also of Parkersburg.
She was predeceased by her parents and a son, Wesley Todd Duncan.
Jane attended Potomac State College and West Virginia Wesleyan College. Jane was
a past member of the Tygart Valley Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary of Dailey and
Valley Bend. Jane also volunteered and worked many years with the Black Diamond
Girl Scouts in both Randolph and Upshur counties. She was active within the
First Presbyterian Church, were she most recently served as an elder. Jane was
also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 14 in Buckhannon.
A memorial service will be conducted in her honor Aug. 26 at 1:30 p.m. at the
First Presbyterian Church in Buckhannon with the Rev. John Harris officiating.
Burial will be in Heavener Cemetery by Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. Following
the burial family will receive friends in the downstairs area of the First
Presbyterian Church. From 23 Aug 2006.
Fleda W. Dye
Fleda W. “Peggy” Dye, 95, a resident of Wishing Well Health in
Fairmont, died Monday, April 3, 2006, in United Hospital Center at Clarksburg.
She was born Dec. 3, 1910, at Frenchton, a daughter of the late Thomas T. Watson
and Mary Ann Skinner Watson.
She was married to James Glenn Dye, who preceded her in death in 1956.
Surviving are one son, Glenn T. “Tom” Dye and wife, Betty Lee, of
Buckhannon; three granddaughters, Ruth Jean Dye of Fairmont, Kathy Findle of
Apex, N.C., and Suellen Wilkins of Tallahasse, Fla.; three grandsons, John T.
Dye and Jack D. Dye of Raleigh, N.C., and James T. Dye of Bushland, Texas; and
seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son,
John D. Dye; one brother, Fred Watson; and one sister, Nellie Rice.
She was a homemaker and a member of Chapter 18 Order of the Eastern Star.
Friends will be received from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Poling-St. Clair
Funeral Home, where Chapter 18 Order of the Eastern Star will conduct a memorial
service at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 6, at
the funeral home with the Rev. Ed Lowther officiating. Interment will follow in
Heavner Cemetery at Buckhannon. Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home is in charge of
