FAYETTEVILLE - Hilda E. Smith Adams, 83, died June 29, 2002 at her home following a long illness.
Born August 23, 1918 in Corliss, she was the daughter of the late Ed and Lou Moore Smith.
Mrs. Adams was a homemaker and a member of Fayetteville Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Aubrey Adams; a brother, Hugh Smith; and two sisters, Herma Smith and Harriet Hatfield.
Survivors include a daughter, Judith E. Howard and husband Bob of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and two grandchildren, Laura Howard of Los Angeles, Calif., and Jen Howard of Denver, Colo.
Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fayetteville Baptist Church with the Revs. Bill Withers and Ron George officiating. Burial will follow in Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Elva E. Brewster, 85, of Crab Orchard, died Friday, June 28, 2002, at 11:55 p.m. at the home of her daughter, Nancy Martin, following a short illness.
Born April 8, 1917 at Sophia, she was the daughter of the late Boyd W. Little and Verdia L. Jarrett Lilly.
She was a member of Crab Orchard Baptist Church and was last employed by the Raleigh County Community Action Association. She was a former employee of the American Tea Co. and Carolina Supermarket, and was a former insurance agent for Modern Woodman Insurance Co.
Mrs. Brewster was preceded in death by her husband, Roland Brewster, and a grandson, Roland Darol Brewster, Jr.
Survivors include three sons, David Brewster and wife Phyllis of Fort Wright, Ky., Darol Brewster and wife Mavis of Riverdale, Md., and Dennis Brewster and wife Denise of Little Washington, N.C.; three daughters, Deana McDaniel and husband Dale of Washington, D.C., Janet Brewster of Alexandria, Va., and Nancy J. Martin and husband Jerry of Crab Orchard; one brother, Estel Bernard Little of Alabama; three sisters, Effie McVey of Beckley, Edna Stover of Crab Orchard and Ella Boothe of Chattanooga, Tenn. Nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive.
Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Crab Orchard Baptist Church with the Revs. Duane Pease and Phil Shields officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.
Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley, and one hour before the service Tuesday at the church.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

SCARBRO - Frances L. Brown, 67, of Whipple, died June 28, 2002 at the Plateau Medical Center following a long illness.
Born April 30, 1935 at Summerlee, she was the daughter of the late James Lesile and Catherine L. Stevens Jones.
Mrs. Brown was a homemaker and a member of the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church and a former member of the Eastern Star. She also attended Dubois High School School.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Charlotte M. Brown; her husband, Lennell Alexander Brown; granddaughter, Michelle Marie Mickey; and a grandson, Lawnelle E. Watts, Jr.
Survivors include three sons, Rodney Wayne Jones, Steven B. Brown and wife Denise, and Dwayne R. Brown, all of Whipple; a step-son, Lennell Brown of Wilmington, DE; four daughters, Lennetta M. Mickey and husband James of Charlotte, NC, Ella L. Watts and husband Lawnelle of Charleston, Betty C. Brown of Oak Hill, and Evangelist Trina D. Brown of Seattle, WA; four brothers, Charles Jones of Cleveland, Ohio, Curtis Jones of Las Vegas, NV, Homer Jones of Adelphia, MD, and Thomas Jones of Wheeling; five sisters, Ella Page of Temple Hills, MD, Rosaline Canada of Summerlee, Delores Wallace of Oak Hill, Veronica Johnson of Marlowe Heights, MD, and Carlos Carlton of Silver Springs, MD; 19 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church, Summerlee with the Revs. Homer Jones and Peter Collins, and Pastor Samuel Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Park, Beckley.

- Lillie May Cole, 104, of Flat Top, died Tuesday, June 25, 2002, at Tarpin Springs, Fla.
Born Oct. 10, 1897 at Flat Top, she was the daughter of the late Luther William Okes and Sarah Frances Lilly Okes.
Mrs. Cole was the oldest Lilly at the Lilly Family Reunion for the past 11 years and the oldest member of the Flat Top Primitive Baptist Church.
She married Richard Dolphus Cole in 1919, who preceded her in death in 1951.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Beecher Cole; infant daughter, Frances Ellen; a daughter, Arbutus Fahey Dommestrup; three brothers, Okey and Teddy of Flat Top and Joseph of Princeton; two sisters, Versie Adkins and Clarice Cline; a great-grandson-in-law, Roger D. Wood Jr., whom had been one of her caregivers.
She attributed her long life to obeying her parents, she was a legend in her own time living in three centuries.
Survivors include four sons, Nelson and wife, Neva of Shady Spring, Aiphon and wife, Rita of Polk City, Fla., Kermit of Kenova and Polk City, Fla., and Ivan and wife, Wilma of Manitau Beach, Mich.; a son-in-law, Aksel Dommestrup of Winter Haven, Fla.; a daughter, Cordie Nugen of Flat Top and Holiday, Fla., who, along with her granddaughter, Rebecca Moody of Flat Top, were her care givers; a sister, Ann Chappell of Bluefield; a brother, Luther Okes of Flat Top; 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Service will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Rose and Quesenberry Shady Spring Chapel with Elder Lewis Lester officiating. Burial will follow in the Okes Family Cemetery at Flat Top.
Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home in Shady Spring.

- Robert L. Frost, 76, of 114 Ellen Ave., Beckley, formerly of Stoneboro, Pa., died at 2:20 p.m. Saturday, June 29, 2002, in his home in Beckley after and extended illness.
Born June 13, 1926 at Stoneboro, Pa., he was the son of the late Clair L. and Reba E. Turner Frost.
Mr. Frost was a resident of West Virginia for 32 years, leaving Stoneboro in 1970. He was a 1944 graduate of the former Stoneboro High School. He was a 1950 graduate of Maryville College of Tennessee, a 1955 graduate of Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge and did post graduate studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1964-65.
He worked for the West Virginia Department of Health and from 1966 to 1979 as a substance abuse counselor and he retired in 1994 as the District Sanitarian water quality inspector. He was a member of the United Methodist Temple of Beckley where he sang in the choir and was active with the United Methodist Men's Group. He was a member of the Raleigh General Hospital Senior Friends Group.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Margarie Ammer.
He married Norma J. Hodge, in Greenville, Pa., January 24, 1970, and she survives at home in Beckley; a daughter, Terri (whereabouts or last name unknown); one brother, Leland Frost of Huntington.
Funeral and committal service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Scott A. Black Funeral Home, Stoneboro, Pa. with the Rev. Richard K. Horn and the pastor of Stoneboro Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Sandy Lake Township, Mercer County, Pa.
Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

- MARION, Ind. - Louise E. Kelley, 77, died 9:20 a.m. Saturday, June 29, 2002, at Colonial Oaks Health Care Center, Marion.
Born July 8, 1924 at Itmann, she was the daughter of the alte Wade and Susie Bare Houck.
Mrs. Kelley lived in Marion since 1954. She married Coy Kelley on Nov. 9, 1946. He died June 26, 1999. She retired from Marion National Corp., Marion, where she worked for more than 30 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Marion, and the Dana Sympathy Club.
Survivors include her son, Thomas (Roseanna) Kelley of Bunker Hill; two sisters, Connie (Tom) Randall of San Bernardino, Calif. and Lena Houck of Beckley; two brothers, Bud Houck and Lannie (Donna) Houck, both of Beckley; her stepmother, Ethel Houck of Beckley; a sister-in-law, Betty Houck of Mullens; a brother-in-law, George (Helen) Kelley of Crumpler, N.C.; two granddaughters, Bridget (Robert) Holley and Stacey (Gabe) Kelley, both of Lafontaine; three great-grandchildren, Indie Myer, Mason Myer, and Carson Kelley; and two stepgrandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Bill Houck, Jim Houck and Porter Houck.
Service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church, 403 W. 4th St., Marion. Burial will follow in Grant Memorial Park, Marion.

- William Harvey Kincaid, Sr., 66, of Crooked Run Road, died Sunday, June 30, 2002 at CAMC Memorial Division, Charleston following a short illness.
Born April 18, 1936 at Kincaid, he was the son of the late Elmer Ray Kincaid, Sr. and Beulah Anderson Kincaid.
Mr. Kincaid was a retired coal miner and welder having retired from Central Appalachian Coal Co and Morris Creek Mines. He was a member of Page Baptist Church and a member of the U.M.W.A. District 17, Local 9619. He served in the National Guard in the late 1950's. He also sang and conducted service at "The Summit," Hidden Valley and Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.
Preceded in death by two sisters, Irene Robertson and Dorcas Kincaid.
Survivors include his wife, Joan G. King Kincaid at home; two sons, William Harvey "Bill" Kincaid, Jr. of Kincaid and Raymond Cook of Clarksville, Tenn.; one daughter, Diana "Cissy" Kincaid Buskus of Oak Hill; one step-son, Mike O'Neal of Garten; three step-daughters, Connie Seay of Beckley, Brenda Thompson of Fayetteville and Terri King of Florida; five brothers, Kyle of Beckley, Cecil of Kincaid, Ashley of Elyria, Ohio, Jerry L. of Kincaid, and Elmer Ray Kincaid, Jr. of Kincaid; four sisters, Bessie Parsons of St. Albans, Juanita Keller of Oak Hill, Anita Young of Charleston and Linda Berry of Coal River; and three grandchildren and seven step-grandchildren.

- HUNTINGTON - Nora Maxine "Mitzie" Addison Lilly, 47, of Huntington, died Friday, June 28, 2002 at the Cabell-Huntington Hospital, Huntington following a long illness.
Born December 15, 1954 at Prosperity, she was the daughter of William S. and Lodema Pittman Addison of Maple Fork Road.
Mrs. Lilly was a homemaker and was of the Christian faith.
Survivors include two sons, Vernon Ray Lilly of Huntington and Virgil Ryan Lilly of Indiana; beloved companion, Chuck Hensley of Huntington; one brother, William D. Addison and companion Brandy Elswick of Maple Fork Road; two sisters, Brenda Addison Turner of Maple Fork Road and Linda Addison Poland and husband John of Raleigh, NC; two grandchildren, Tanisha and Brianna Lilly.
Graveside rites will be 1 p.m. today at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity with Sister Diana Pittman officiating.

FITZPATRICK - Dennis O. Webb, 52, of Fitzpatrick, died Sunday, June 30, 2002 at 8:50 a.m. at his home following a long illness.
Born December 3, 1949 at Glen Morgan, he was the son of the late Ross and Elizabeth Milam Webb.
Mr. Webb was a former employee at Beckley Stone Co. as an equipment operator. He lived most of his life at Fitzpatrick.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Bragg and Nancy Rhodes.
Survivors include three sons, Dennis D. Webb of Indiana, John W. Webb of Fitzpatrick, and Jason A. Webb of Beaver; one daughter, Amanda G. Ratliff of Beaver; five brothers, Bennie of Beaver, Kenny and wife Sue of Beaver, Jimmy and wife Gloria of Crab Orchard, David of Coal City, and Robert Webb of Fitzpatrick; four sisters, Nina Bragg and husband Beecher of Fitzpatrick, Faye Redden of Grandview, Brenda Redden of Grandview, and Sharon Meadows and husband David of Crab Orchard; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside rites and burial will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Webb Cemetery at Maple Meadow with the Rev. Kenny Wayne Webb officiating.

OAK HILL - Beatrice Miller Blake, 89, died Friday, June 28, 2002, at Plateau Medical Center, Oak Hill, following a short illness.
Born May 23, 1913, at Elkhorn, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Beatrice Guy Miller.
Mrs. Blake was a well-known music teacher for more than 60 years, she was a graduate of Ward-Belmont Junior College in Nashville, Tenn., and the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y.
She crocheted and donated hundreds of afghans and lap robes to the Veteran's Hospital in Beckley, and to many area nursing homes. Her generosity was inspired by two of her brothers who served their country as pilots in the military.
She was also known for the many pedigreed cats bred and sold at her Fantasticats Cattery. Many of her cats won state and national awards.
Mrs. Blake was preceded in death by her first husband, James Duane Kuhn; and her second husband, Ottie Lee Blake.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Carolyn Kuhn of Oak Hill; her daughter, Carol William-son of Durham, N.C.; a sister, Dorothy Biggs of Louisville, Ky.; five grandsons; two granddaughters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.
The famliy will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 345 Kelly Ave., Oak Hill. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church with Father Roy Crist officiating. A private burial will take place at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens at Bluewell.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Fayette County Humane Society or Habitat for Humanity.

Larry Eugene Cooper, 63, of Cool Ridge, died Monday, July 1, 2002, at Raleigh Rehabilitation Center following a long illness.
Born March 15, 1939, at Odd, he was the son of the late Malachi Cooper and Luna Hawley Cooper.
Mr. Cooper was a retired security guard in Detroit, Mich., and was a former truck driver.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Roger Dale Cooper.
Survivors include his sons, Douglas Larry Cooper and wife, JoAnn of Ghent, Robert Eugene Cooper and wife, Kelly of Dearborn Heights, Mich., and Dwayne Allen Cooper of Dearborn Heights; a brother, Jim Cooper and wife, Janet of Cool Ridge; a sister, Marie King of Cool Ridge; and four grandchildren.
Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Rose and Quesenberry Shady Spring Chapel with the Rev. Oppie Lilly officiating. Burial will follow in Cooper Cemetery at Egeria.

- Opal McDaniel Fernandez, 85, of MacArthur, died Sunday, June 30, 2002, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness.
Born April 11, 1917, at Mabscott, she was the daughter of the late John William and Victoria Ingram McDa-niel.
Mrs. Fernandez spent her childhood in Mabscott then moved to Charleston and Pennsylvania. She returned to the MacArthur area where she has lived for 30 years. She was a member of the Church of Christ of Beckley and was a homemaker and a wonderful mother and grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Lee Fernandez, on Jan. 4, 1980; a daughter, Rose Marie Fernandez; a granddaughter, Cheryl Allen; and two brothers, James E. and Ray McDaniel.
Survivors include two daughters, Nora Hammack of Columbus, Ohio and Mrs. Paul (Myrna) Parsons of Charleston; a son, Franklin R. Fernandez of Beaver and three sisters, Alice Miller of South Charleston, Mrs. Bill (Virginia) Andrews and Rose Pettit, both of Detroit, Mich.; six grandchildren, Paul Jr., Robert, Rose, Debbie, Ronnie and Jamie; and four great-grandchildren, Mercedes, Keri, Micah and Jeremy.
Graveside service will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Graceland Memorial Park, Charleston, with Pastor Jeff Belknap officiating. Burial will follow.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

- BROOKVILLE, Ohio - Ethel E. Rushford Jones, 87, formerly of Hinton, died Saturday, June 29, 2002, at Brookville, following a long illness.
Born May 11, 1915, in Summers County, she was the daughter of the late John and Pricia Bragg.
Mrs. Jones was a retired sales clerk at the Union Store in Columbus, Ohio, a member of the Brookville Community United Methodist Church, and Triangle Chapter No. 592 Order of the Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, William A. Rushford; her second husband, Harry F. Jones; three brothers, Earl J. Bragg and wife, Mary, Carl H. Bragg and Pearl Bragg; and a sister, Patsy Kelly.
Survivors include a son, James H. Rushford of Bangkok, Thailand; a daughter, Martha R. Ballengee of Brookville, Ohio; a brother, Paul Bragg and wife, Geneva of Hinton; two sisters-in-law, Stella Bragg of Hinton and Geneva Bragg of Brookville, Ohio; a brother-in-law, the Rev. Fred R. Kelley of Anpalusia, Ala.; and two grandchildren, Elizabeth Ann Ballengee and Bryant Joseph (B.J.) Ballengee.

Born Oct. 29, 1942, in Nicholas County, she was the daughter of James and Ruby Baker of MacArthur.
Mrs. Lee was a certified nursing assistant at Fayette Continuous care and a member of Ansted Baptist Church at Ansted.
Frances was preceded in death by a brother, Charles.
Other survivors include a daughter, Anna of Williams-town; two sons, Robert of Victor and James of Columbus, Ohio; three sisters, Pauline of Vineland, N.J., Debbie and Kandas of Beckley; a sister-in-Christ, Sandy Dean of Columbus, Ohio; three brothers, Curtis, Jimmy and Otis, all of Beckley; and three grandchildren.
Service will be 2 p.m. Wed-nesday at the Ansted Baptist Church at Ansted with the Rev. Larry Gawthrop officiating. Burial will follow in Restlawn Memory Gardens at Victor.

- ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Thomas R. Wilson Jr., 83, died Friday, June 28, 2002, at Northside Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla.
He was born in Thayer. He lived in Beckley from 1948 to 1961, where he was an attorney. He moved to St. Petersburg in 1961 where he retired as Vice President and Trust Officer of Union Trust National Bank, St. Petersburg. He was a member of Bay Point Christian Church and Military Order of World Wars.
He was a former member of the St. Petersburg Exchange Club.
He is survived by three sons, Thomas R. Wilson III of Orlando, Fla., James Wilson of Fort Myers, Fla., David Mason Wilson of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a daughter, Mergie Adams of St. Louis, Mo.; two sisters, Annabell Frilen of Orlando, Fla., Charlotte McIntyre of Lancaster, Pa.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Service and burial was in St. Petersburg.

HERNDON - Jimmie Lee Cain, 82, died Monday, July 1, 2002, at a Beckley hospital following a long illness.
Born Feb. 9, 1920, at Coal Run, he was the son of the late George and Ethel Bradshaw Cain.
Mr. Cain was a member of Basin Freewill Baptist Church, a retired coal miner, having retired from Westmoreland Coal Co. after 38 years of service, and a member of the UMWA and Local Union 5955 at McAlpin.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing and baseball, being an avid Dodgers fan.
He was also preceded in death by a son, Ronald Keith Cain; three brothers; and a sister.
Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, Alice Jane Mills Cain; four daughters, Dorothy Conley of Elyria, Ohio, Joyce Cain of Basin, Viola Seel of Grafton, Ohio, and Elfreda McKinney of Basin; six sons, Noah Cain of Lagrange, Ohio, Kenneth Cain of Elyria, Ohio, Jimmie Dale Cain of LaGrange, Ky., Billy Cain of Crossville, Tenn., Richard Cain of Coal City and Dennie Cain of Sophia; a sister, Margaret Ward of Beckley; 24 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren.

PINEVILLE - Edgar Jackson "Chief" Maynard Sr., 62, died Monday, July 1, 2002, at his residence following a sudden illness.
Born Aug. 4, 1939, at Wayne, he was the son of the late Floyd and Pearl Dameron Maynard.
Mr. Maynard served his country for 30 years in the U.S. Navy Seabee's, retiring as a senior chief petty officer on March 31, 1986. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Mark; and a sister, Ellie.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Janet Louise Neace Maynard; four sons, Tom Maynard and his wife, Melinda, of Woodbridge, Va., Steve Maynard and his wife, Korene, of Statesville, N.C., Edgar Jackson Maynard Jr. and his fiancé, Shirley, of Statesville and Travis Maynard and his wife, Janie, of Bethlehem, N.C.; a daughter, Ginger Prince and her husband, Bruce, of Oak Hill; a brother, Burnie Maynard and his wife, Betty, of Beverly Hills, Fla.; two sisters, Ruby Irwin of Bel Air, Md., and Jane Kitchen and her husband, Kenneth, of Logan; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

BALLARD - John Wayne Meadows, 35, formerly of Forest Hill, passed away Monday morning, July 1, 2002, at his home following a sudden illness.
Wayne was a loving husband, father, son, brother and friend to many. He grew up at Forest Hill where he attended River Valley Baptist Church.
Wayne resided at Ballard with his wife, Cindy, and was employed by Unique Balance Manufacturing of Pence Springs.
Born Feb. 22, 1967, at Hinton, he was the son of Willard and Brenda Burnette Meawdows of Forest Hill.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Brady Meadows; and maternal grandfather, John Burnette.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife, Cindy Price Meadows; a son, Brady T. Meadows of Athens; a stepdaughter, Christina Graham and husband, Matt, of Lindside; a stepson, Jonathan Sartin at home; a stepgranddaughter, Kaylin Graham; a sister, Edha Meadows of Forest Hill; paternal grandmother, Catherine Meawdows of Forest Hill; maternal grandmother, Madeline Burnette of Hinton; and special friend, Mike Perkins of Peterstown.

LEWISBURG - Marvis Nutter Wilkerson Pirro died Saturday, June 29, 2002, at her home at Greystone Landing after a long illness.
She was born at White Sulphur Springs in 1921.
She moved to Lewisburg after marrying James M. Wilkerson, owner of Liberty Electric Co. After World War II, she went to work for the Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co. (now Verizon Communications) where she had a successful career and retired as a management employee in 1981.
In 1967, she married Vincent Pirro, music director for The Greenbrier, who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Pirro loved music and also enjoyed reading, gardening and, in her retirement years, volunteer work. She had been a member of Lewisburg United Methodist Church since 1941. She was an active member while still in good health, serving at different times as Methodist youth fellowship leader, chairman and program director of the Guild, circle chairman, and board member. She was a member of the Greenbrier Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary and served as its president for two years, a member of the Greenbrier County Historical Society and an active member of the Greenbrier County Democratic Women's Club. She also served as a Red Cross volunteer at the State Fair of West Virginia.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda W. Turner, and a son-in-law, T.M. Turner, of Sedona, Ariz.; and her grandson, John F. McKune Jr. and wife, Margaret, of Golden, Colo.
Family visitation will be 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at McCraw Funeral Home, Lewisburg. Entombment service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Rosewood Cemetery with the Rev. Ross Evans officiating.

FAYETTEVILLE - Sandra Sue Hess Dutton, 61, died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, in a Charleston hospital following a long illness.
Born April 9, 1941, at Elberton, she was the daughter of the late Loren Delbert and Grace Alma Johnson Hess.
Mrs. Hess was a cook and an activity director for Christian Nursing Home.
She was preceded in death by her son, James Lee "Jimbo" Dutton, on March 15, 1987; and two sisters, Iwilda Canterbury and Faun Shaffer.

Reba Mae Stump Summers, 78, of Beckley, died at 11:10 a.m. Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness.
Born Aug. 7, 1923, at Lillybrook, she was the daughter of the late Grover Cleveland Stump and Lillian Smith Stump.
Mrs. Summers was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Timmy and Jacqueline Cole; a daughter, Trudy Summers; and five brothers, Grover Stump Jr., Harry Stump, Ed Stump, Marion Stump and Dan Stump.

CORINNE - Cecil (Poncho) Lopez, 78, died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at his residence following a long illness.
Born May 5, 1924, at Bud, he was the son of the late Zenis and Evelion O'Neal Lopez.
Mr. Lopez was a retired employee of the Wyoming County Board of Education, retiring after 28 years of service as custodian for Stephenson Elementary School.
He was a former employee of the Glenn Company and was a former coal miner, having worked at Deerfield.
He was a member of Amigo Missionary Baptist Church, and was a U.S. Army veteran having served during World War II, being recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Arrowhead, American Theater Service Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal.
Mr. Lopez was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Frank Lopez; and an infant sister.

NORFOLK, Va. - Larry L. Meador, 67, of the 1300 block of Fishermans Road, a native of Pipestem, and the son of the late Luther L. Meador of Pipestem and Audie F. Neely Meador of Norfolk, Va., both originally from West Virginia, passed on to be with our Lord on Wednesday, July 3, 2002.
Mr. Meador resided in the Tidewater area for 51 years, and was the co-founder and owner of Adesso Precision Machine Company, a manufacturing facility located in Norfolk, Va.
Larry was born at True, W.Va., and was a graduate of the 1951 class of Hinton High School in Hinton. After graduation he came to Norfolk, and for 20 years worked as apprentice, machinist or foreman in machine shops of Norfolk, Newport News and Portsmouth. Larry and seven friends established Adesso Precision Machine in 1971 as one of a few non-shipyard shops in the Tidewater area, where he acted as president and general manager for many years. Through Adesso's apprenticeship program, Larry provided education and experience to many of the area's best machinists, and current industry business owners. The business will continue to operate under the management of his son, David Meador.
Mr. Meador was a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy Waddell Meador, with whom he just celebrated his 51st wedding anniversary. In addition, Larry is survived by his daughter, A. Renee Meador of Suffolk, Va.; two sons, Michael R. Meador and his bride, Catherine, of Chesapeake, Va., and David K. Meador and his wife, Margaret, of Virginia Beach, Va.; four sisters, Melba Meador Messner of Grambrills, Md., Diane Meador Stoakley of Yorktown, Va., Debbie Meador Douglas of Mentor, Ohio, and Anita Meador of Maryland; a brother, Charles Meador of Poquoson, Va.; five grandchildren, Michele, Christin, Rebecca and Patricia Meador of Chesapeake, Va., and Erica Meador of Suffolk, Va.

- DOVER, Del. - Dolly Hester Rookstool Meads, 91, formerly of Alderson and Scott Depot, died Saturday, June 22, 2002, at the home of her daughter in Dover, Del., where she had lived for the past seven years.
Born Jan. 28, 1911, at the family home place in Palestine, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late John Hunter and Minnie Hall Rookstool.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Leonard Meads, in 1984; a grandson, John Allen Meads, in 1995; four brothers, Oakey Rookstool, Lawrence Rookstool, Charles Rookstool and an infant brother; and four sisters, Blanche Bostic, Edna Wyand, Edythe Johnson and Josie McCulloch.
Mrs. Meads enjoyed life as a homemaker and as a caregiver, helping with the care of family, friends, and neighbors. She always said laughter was the best medicine.
During World War II, Mrs. Meads worked in the Rayon Plant at Covington, Va. She was a member of the Old Greenbrier Baptist Church of Alderson and a member of the Women of the Moose, St. Albans.
Mrs. Meads loved people and telling a good joke. She also loved gardening, working in her yard, country music, dancing and nature, especially birds and squirrels.
Survivors include a son, Billy Joe Meads and wife, Edna, of New Haven, W.Va.; two daughters, Rebecca Jane Boltz and her husband, Jippy, of Richmond, Va., and Peggy J. ALDERSON - William Howard Shelton, 83, died Sunday, June 30, 2002, at the home of his daughter in Roseville, Calif., following a long illness.
Born May 29, 1919, at Alderson, he was the son of the late William G. and Margaret Mitchell Shelton.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, William David Shelton; a sister, Thelma Epperly; and three brothers, Ralph Shelton, Fred Shelton and Forrest Shelton.
Mr. Shelton was a retired mechanic, having retired from the Ford Motor Corporation in Sacramento, Calif., retiring after 48 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Jean W. Mary Jo Thomas, 69, of Spring Street, Beckley, died Sunday, June 30, 2002, in a Newport News, Va., hospital following a long illness.
Born Nov. 14, 1932, at Lizemores, she was the daughter of Anna Mae Morton Holcomb of Beckley and the late Lawson Dana Holcomb.
Mary Jo spent her childhood and has been a lifelong resident of Beckley. She was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, worked at the Raleigh County National Bank and retired from Bank One. She was of the Christian faith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Thomas.
Besides her mother, other survivors include a brother, Robert "Bob" Holcomb and his wife, Dora Elizabeth, of Surry, Va.; two nieces, Fran Holcomb and Elizabeth Inge, both of Newport News, Va.; two great-nephews, Ryan Wilson and Robert Drew Inge; and a great-niece, Kaitlyn Inge.

CONWAY, S.C. - Stella Irene Vest, 97, formerly of Corinne, died Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at Conway Hospital, Conway, S.C.
Born Oct. 24, 1904, in Floyd County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Pedro Cos-tella and Rosa Jane Lawrence Wilson.
Mrs. Vest was a homemaker, a member of the Eastern Star Chapter 100 of Mullens, the White Shrine and a member of Mullens United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, No-ay Vest; one brother and one sister.

Mrs. Alderman was a homemaker, a former employee of C&P Telephone Co., Beckley Hospital, Jumping Branch Post Office and assistant superintendent at the West Virginia Prison for Women at Pence Springs. She served as organist for Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors for the past 40 years and for Peyton's Camp Meeting for the past 37 years.
She served all aspects of the youth of Jumping Branch Tabernacle. Along with her husband, she was active in all the affairs of the church, especially the music that was her special love.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Pastor Elmo R. Alderman Sr.; a son, E. Ray Alderman Jr. of Jumping Branch; two daughters, Dalene Coffman and husband, Tom, of Jumping Branch and Karen Poff and husband, Kent, of Gainesville, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Tara Oakey and husband, Jason, of Roanoke, Va., Joel Coffman and wife, Sara, of Christiansburg, Va., Joanna Coffman of Princeton and Sara, Jonathan, Kristina and Katie Poff, all of Gainesville, Ga.; and two sisters, Stella Hess and Lois Mahoney and husband, Harry, all of Elkins.
Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Jumping Branch Gospel Tabernacle with Pastors Allen Gallimore and Ben Peyton officiating. Burial will follow in Restwood Memorial Gardens, Hinton.
Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the church.
Men of the church will serve as pallbearers, and the Tabernacle Youth Fellowship teens will serve as flower bearers.

- Dennis Howell Canaday, 65, of Sophia, died Thursday, July 4, 2002, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness.
Born May 5, 1937, in Lester, he was the son of the late Carnie C. and Vada Miller Canaday.
Mr. Canaday was a maintenance worker for the telephone company who loved country music. He enjoyed mechanic work, especially spending time working on cars and TVs.
He served his country in the Air Force during peacetime and received the Good Conduct Medal and Air Force Longevity Service Award.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Canaday.
Survivors include 12 children, Lorraine Cheryl Furphy and husband, George, Gail Belinda True, Roxanne Darlene Freeman and Darryl L. - QUINWOOD - Marshall Woodrow "Woody" Keener, 79, died Friday, July 5, 2002, at the Beckley VA Medical Center following a long illness.
Born Nov. 30, 1922, in Fenwick, he was a son of the late Clarence Levi and Lottie Alice Riffle Keener.
Mr. Keener was a retired U.S. Air Force veteran with 23 years' service. He retired as a staff sergeant and then went into farming. He was of the Catholic faith.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Dana Harmon and Myrtle Keener; and four brothers, Clarence, James, Ed and Buck Keener.
Survivors include a daughter, Shelly Lewis; two sons, Thomas Keener of Quinwood and James Keener and wife, Teresa, of Rainelle; two grandchildren, Jessica and Nathan Lewis; two stepgrandchildren, Lisa and Joe Hanshaw; and many nieces and nephews.

- QUINWOOD - Elvan E. McClung, 77, died Friday, July 5, 2002, at his home after a sudden illness.
Born Jan. 19, 1925, in Quinwood, he was a son of the late James Preston and Edna Lea Hedges McClung.
Mr. McClung was a member of John Page VFW Post No. 4484, Rainelle, the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and National Rifle Association. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from which he received a Purple Heart and two Oak Leaf Clusters. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Quinwood, and had been a barber for 30 years.
He was preceded in death by a stepson, Jerry Dean Billings; three sisters, Nellie Jennings, Maude Keaveny and Elizabeth Meadows; and a brother, Ralph McClung.
Survivors include his wife, Lorene Pittsenbarger McClung; a daughter, Donna Fay McClung of Miami Beach, Fla.; three stepdaughters, Sylvia Lohr of Cumberland, Va., Sandra Sanders of Madison and Pamela Lewis of Crichton; a son, Harmon Conway McClung of Loveland, Ohio; a stepson, Larry Billings of Colonial Heights, Va.; two sisters, Verna Rosewell of Gauley Bridge and Florence Hight of Kissimmee, Fla.; a brother, Fred McClung of McCross; 17 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

- Leta Jean Thurmond, 72, of Circleview Drive, Beckley, departed this life Friday, July 5, 2002, to be united with her Lord after a long illness.
Born May 13, 1930, at Jumping Branch, she was the daughter of Zina Basham and Ruby Lilly Basham of Jumping Branch.
Mrs. Thurmond was a member of Bluestone Baptist Church, Jumping Branch, and had worked for many years at Peerless Packing Co. in Daniels. She was dearly loved and will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; a daughter, Patricia Gantt; and sister, Eula Basham.
Survivors include a son, Billy Joe Thurmond; three sisters, Julia Paterson and husband, Charles, of Beckley, Dee Francis and husband, Dick, of Annapolis, Md., and Mary Phillips and husband, Charles, of Dale City, Va.; two brothers, Edward Basham and wife, Dottie, of Ellicott City, Md., and Dempsey Basham and wife, Melissa, of Charlottes-ville, Va.; three grandchildren, David Baugh, Preston Baugh and Amy Greene of Austin, Texas; and a great-granddaughter, Paisley Greene of Austin.

- VICTOR - Ross Douglas Wood Sr., 73, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2002, in a Charleston hospital following a long illness.
Born July 26, 1928, in Winona, he was the son of the late Edgar Ross and Mabel Jones Wood.
Mr. Wood was a retired heavy equipment operator from Central Appalachian Coal Co.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Finks Wood.
Survivors include a son, Ross Douglas Wood Jr. of Victor; two sisters, Charlotte Ridolfo of St. James City, Fla., and Joan McGraw of Fredericksburg, Va.; two grandchildren, Andrew Wood of Fort Worth, Texas, and Valerie Wood of Victor; and a lifelong friend, Bill Smith of Phoenix, Ariz.

- FAYETTEVILLE - Cordy (Cordelia) Blume Phillips King, 72, went to her homecoming among family and friends and with Frank's music playing on Friday, July 5, 2002.
The beginning of Cordy's book started on Aug. 30, 1929, at Fayette Station to the late Edward G. and Mary Thelma Bennett Blume.
Cordy spent 38 wonderful years working at WJLS "Big Dawg" radio station and became both friend and "Mom" to many.
She was a gift to her four brothers, William Morgan Blume and Julian Christian "J.C." Blume, both of Fayetteville, Charles Bennett Blume of St. Petersburg, Fla., and the late Edward Gerard Blume.
She was blessed and stressed with three daughters, Marty Phillips Watkins of Frankford, Sharon Phillips Cruikshank of Fayetteville and Tracy Ann King of Oak Hill.
The love of life continues in her grandchildren, Morgan Ryan Cruikshank, Mary Elizabeth Watkins and Michael Roy Cruikshank.
We celebrate her life with hugs, love, tears and laughter. When the last chapter was written, she could say she did it "My Way."
Service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Fayetteville Baptist Church with the Revs. Gordon Ross and Ron George officiating.

- BALTIMORE - Esta Merle Hall Robertson, 81, passed away at 12:30 a.m. Saturday, July 6, 2002, after a short illness.
Born Aug. 20, 1920, at Blue Jay, she was the daughter of the late Henry S. and Lula M. Hall.
Esta had been a resident of the Baltimore area for the past 60 years.
Before moving to Baltimore she worked many years at the G.C. Murphy Co. store in Beckley. After moving to Baltimore, she assisted her husband in his radiator business. After the death of her husband, she worked as a store manager of Hickory Farms and with her son's business for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry S. and Lula M. Hall; her husband, Joe C. Robertson; a sister, Betty Lou Hall; and a brother, Henry S. Jr.
Survivors include a son, J.C. - TALCOTT - Linda J. Lilly, 53, of Judson Rd., Talcott, died at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, July 6, 2002, at the Princeton Community Hospital at Princeton, following a long illness.
Born April 10, 1949 at Summers Co., she was a daughter of the late Claris Woodrow Harvey and the late Helen Marie Anderson Harvey and was a lifelong resident of Summers County.
Linda was a member of the Rollynsburg Baptist Church of Talcott and was active in the affairs of the church as long as her health permitted. She was a former co-owner of Abie's Market in Hinton, and a former employee of Magic Mart in Hinton.
Survived by her husband, Charles A. "Abie" Lilly at home; one daughter, Lynn Jan Pence of Princeton; two sons, Charles A. Lilly, Jr. and wife Anna of Athens and Abraham C. Lilly of Talcott; three grandchildren; one brother, Jerry Ray Harvey of Tempa; five sisters, Drema Bostic and husband Clarence of White Sulphur Springs, Marsha Basham and husband Marvin of Jumping Branch, Hazel Meador and husband Rodney of Forest Hill, Rebecca Rey-nold of Hilldale and Anna Mae Goad and husband Roger of Bellview, Ohio.

- After enjoying a full and wonderful 75th birthday with family and friends on July 5th, Melvin Harold Pendry celebrated his heavenly birthday late that same night, passing away at home from heart failure.
Born in Ostego in 1927 to the late Parthena and Lacy Pendry, Harold lived the past 44 years at 102 Randolph Street in Beckley. He excelled at Sophia Grade School and Mark Twain High School, in McAlphin, before entering the Navy during World War II. Following discharge from the Navy, Harold worked 42 years at the McAlpin and East Gulf mines.
During his career, Harold was a member of UMWA Local 5955 and served as the president and financial secretary of the Local for many years. He also became President of the Coal Miner's Political Action Committee (COMPAC) and, in that capacity, testified before the United States Congress on behalf of coal miners' rights and benefits. He also volunteered as a member of the Raleigh County American Red Cross for several years.
Harold was a born-again Christian who loved the Lord. Along with his wife, he was very active in church activities at the First Church of God on Robert C. Byrd Drive in Beckley. He served as chairman of the Board of Directors until no longer physically able to do so. He excelled in several bowling leagues at Leisure Lanes and Acculanes, often competing in national tournaments throughout the country. He also enjoyed golf and traveling. As anyone who knew Harold could readily tell, his greatest love and proudest accomplishment was his family, especially his grandchildren.
Harold is survived by his wife of 48 years, Joann Jessup Pendry; son, Rodney Harold and wife Crystal and grandson William, age 2, of Brick, NJ; son, Kerwin Barry Pendry and wife Joy and grandson William Blatt, age 17, of Sandersville, GA; son, Dale LaRay Pendry and wife Patty and grandson Greyson, age 11, and granddaughter Audra, age 6, of Valencia, Calif.; and sister, Jacqueline Meadows of Crab Orchard.
Harold was cremated and his memorial service will be held 7 p.m. today at the First Church of God at 2809 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley with the Rev. Vondie Cook officiating.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy may be made to the First Church of God Building Fund.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to service.
