  • COAL MOUNTAIN - Evelyn Ilene Addison, 63, died at 5:55 a.m. Monday, April 8, 2002, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley. Born Sept. 3, 1938, in McComas, she was the daughter of Hazel Hanes Toler of Coal Mountain and the late Finley Toler. Mrs. Addison was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harold Addison; a son, Michael Addison; a daughter, Irene Morgan; and two sisters, Patricia Sparks and Janet Thomas. Other survivors include her companion and friend of 28 years, Rickie Hatfield of Coal Mountain; four daughters, Sharon Stull of Landis, N.C., Donna Hatfield and her husband, Drewey Hatfield Jr., of Coal Mountain, Becky Bishop and her husband, Anderson, of Aimon and Beth Davis and her husband, Scott, of Laural Branch (Clearfork); two sons, Mark Addison of Danville, Va., and Robert Gunter of Roanoke, Va.; a brother, Finley Toler Jr. of Coal Mountain; three sisters, Dorothy Allen of Welch, Annette Hatfield of Castleberry, Va., and Lana Hatfield of Coal Mountain; 13 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.   • Lois M. Bellamy, 96, of Prosperity, died Sunday, April 7, 2002, in a Beckley area hospital following a long illness. Born Oct. 17, 1905, in Prosperity, she was the daughter of the late Joseph F. and Annie F. Williams Wright. Mrs. Bellamy was a homemaker and a faithful member of Prosperity Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Glen Lee Bellamy Sr.; two sons, Joseph F. Bellamy and Glen L. Bellamy Jr. and his wife, Geneva; five brothers, Nathan O. Wright, Norval W. Wright, Elmer Wright, Noel Wright and Omer J. Wright; a sister, Olive Mitchell; a son-in-law, Myles Joe Crowder; and a granddaughter, Linda Bellamy Burns. Survivors include a son, Herbert N. Bellamy and his wife, Gertrude, of Prosperity; three daughters, Carol White and her husband, Monroe, of Sugar Land, Texas, Annie Crowder of Summersville and Nadine Jaap and her husband, John, of Prosperity; a sister, Vera L.   • Mildred Gravely Redden, 88, of Mabscott, died Monday, April 8, 2002, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born Oct. 22, 1913, in McAlpin, she was the daughter of the late Lewis and Algie Williams Gravely. Mrs. Redden was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Lewis, Burton, William and John Gravely; and two sisters, Garnet Gravely and Patsy Molchan. Survivors include her husband, Homer Redden; a daughter, Sue Walters and her husband, Freddie R., of Mabscott; a son, Dennis and his wife, Betty, of Charleston; four grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a sister, Virginia Evans of Beckley; and a host of nieces and nephews.   • OAK HILL - JoAnn Bowyer Roberts, 72, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at Charleston Area Medical Center, General Division, following a sudden illness. Born June 7, 1929, in Oak Hill, he was the son of the late Frank E. and Bessie Corda Durham Bowyer. Mrs. Roberts was a homemaker and a member of Oak Hill First Presbyterian Church, where she was the nursery teacher for Sunday school and was known as "Mama Jo" by several generations of children. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jackie Ray Roberts. Survivors include a daughter, Debbie Gill and her husband, Toby, of Princeton; a brother, Kenneth Bowyer of Cleveland; three granddaughters, Mary Beth Gill of Princeton, Heather Riddle of Pensacola, Fla., and Kelly Lundy of Princeton; and a great-grandson, Stephen Ray Lundy.   • Richard H. "Dick" Roberts Jr., 76, of North Lilly Drive, Beckley, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at a local hospital following a short illness. Born April 19, 1925, in Richmond, Va., he was the son of the late Richard H. and Nancy Wood Roberts Sr. Mr. Roberts was a supply house supervisor for Eastern Associated Coal Corp. for 37 years and a member of Beckley Presbyterian Church, the Masonic Lodge at Madison and the Beni Kedem Shrine Temple in Charleston. He was a past member of the Lions Club at Kopperston and Rotary Club in Beckley. Mr. Roberts was a member of the Black Diamond Officiating League, officiating at football and basketball games throughout Southern West Virginia. He was a graduate of Fork Union Military Academy and Marshall University. He was a member of Black Knight Country Club and was a veteran of World War II, serving in Europe with the U.S. Air Force. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Louise Roberts; and an infant brother. Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Roberts; two daughters, Carolyn S. Lloyd and her husband, Donald E., of Beckley and Peggy Hampton and her husband, Richard, of Crab Orchard; a stepson, J. Michael Campbell and his wife, Wendy, of Fairhope, Ala.; six grandchildren, Nick Lloyd, Andrea Lloyd Warden, Richard E. Hampton and Tim, John and Joshua Campbell; and a great-grandson, Nathan Warden.   • CHARLTON HEIGHTS - Geraldine Brafford Davis Baisi, 74, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, in Montgomery General Hospital. Born April 12, 1927, in Fairmont, she was the daughter of the late William Davis, who was a retired West Virginia State Trooper, and Ethel Brafford Davis, who was a retired registered nurse. After the death of her mother, she was raised by her paternal grandparents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Ar-chibal Davis, and her aunt, Clara Davis, who resides in Harding. She married Neal D. Baisi, coach, administrator and teacher at West Virginia Tech, in May 1950 and later gave birth to twin boys, Patrick Albert and Michael William, in June 1951 and a daughter, Deborah Lou, in 1953. She was a graduate of Elkins High School and was a retired registered nurse, having graduated from St. Mary's School of Nursing in Clarksburg. She was a Methodist, a member of the Montgomery Women's Club, the Glenn Falls Garden Club and the West Virginia University Institute of Technology water aerobics class. She was a very proud homemaker, active in many activities at WVUIT and a 52-year resident of Charlton Heights. Survivors include her husband, Neal D. Baisi; two sons, Patrick Albert Baisi of Glen Ferris and Michael William Baisi of Beckley; a daughter, Deborah Baisi Lively of Brad-ley; seven grandchildren, Me-lissa Ann Baisi, Chad Edward Honaker, Rick Lee Elkins, Geri Lynn Baisi, Patricia Rose Bai-si, Cassie Rea Lively and Pat-rick Braden Baisi; and a great-grandchild, Rick Lee Elkins Jr. Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Montgomery Presbyterian Church with Dr. Denise Hall officiating.   • CRAWLEY - Beatrice L. Crawford, 93, passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at The Brier Nursing Center, Ronceverte, following a long illness. Born Dec. 29, 1908, in Buffalo, she was the daughter of the late Zera and Louise Barrows Raynes. Mrs. Crawford was the co-proprietor of Oak Knoll Bed and Breakfast of Crawley and a homemaker. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lewis C. Crawford Sr., in 1995. Survivors include a son, Lewis C. Crawford Jr. of Rupert; two daughters, Helen Louise Sanford of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Annie Perry Jeffus of Maxwelton; a half sister, Margaret Davis of Ironton, Ohio; a half brother, Bill Raynes of Great Falls, Mont.; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.   • Kind and caring, beloved son, brother and uncle, Stephen Patrick Hicks, 37, of Crab Orchard, went to be with God early Tuesday morning, April 9, 2002. Born April 5, 1965, he was an avid outdoorsman and master craftsman. He was preceded in death by his father, Denver Hicks; and two brothers, Douglas L. and Kenneth I. Hicks. Survivors include his mother, Shirley Harmon Hicks of Crab Orchard; a brother, Denver L.   • COAL MOUNTAIN - Eva Pearl Lester, 89, of P.O. Box 147, died at 4:20 a.m. Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at her home. Born Sept. 28, 1912, in Lea-therwood, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Launa Browning Walls. Mrs. Lester attended Coal Mountain Community Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Lester Sr.; three sons, Arnold Lester, Junior Rastus Lester and Hubert Lester; a daughter, Inos Ramsey; three brothers, Edward Walls, Lee Walls and Albert Walls; and six sisters, Dorothy Mitchell, Lena Hatfield, Fannie Carter, Belva White, Edna Justice and Betty Walls.   • Evelyn Marie Nelson, 80, of 507 N. Lilly Drive, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a short illness. Born Sept. 21, 1921, in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late A.E. Redden and Mary Florence Bragg Redden. Mrs. Nelson was a retired employee of Dow Chemical Co. with 30 years of service. She had made her home in Cleveland for many years. She spent her winter months with her daughter Marlene Catania in Cape Coral, Fla., and spent her summer months with her daughter Juanita Pyles. She was of the Methodist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Lee Nelson; two brothers, Delbert and Howard Redden; and a sister, Beulah Craddock.   • WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS - Pastor Lambuth E. Nutter, 87, passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at his home following heart failure. Born Sept. 2, 1914, in Mount Hope, he was the youngest child of Newman Lloyd and Lucy Etta Nutter. Mr. Nutter graduated from Morris Harvey College at Barboursville and began teaching in Greenbrier County at the age of 19. After teaching for about 10 years, he and his brother Lloyd A. Nutter established the Nutter Brothers Cash Store and MacMary's Wholesale Gift Shop. In 1942, Pastor Nutter began his ministry at the Community Tabernacle in White Sulphur Springs and continued until his death. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Mary Bronaugh Nutter; a son, Lambuth Lee Nutter; a grandson, Lambuth David Nutter; three brothers, Leslie, Lloyd A. and Herbert Lee; and a sister, Lelia Fife. Survivors include his daughters, Mary Sandra and Glee Lelia Nutter of White Sulphur Springs; sons, Leslie Dee and his wife, Frances, of York, Pa., and Newman Lewis and his wife, Deborah, of Poca; a daughter-in-law, Gayla of Lexington, S.C.; eight grandchildren, Lynette, Scott, Lambuth Alan, Justin, Andrea, Evan, Ryan and Drew; and eight great-grandchildren, Gary, David, Brittany, Hanna, Jeremy, Malachi, Madelyn and Elizabeth.   • SINKS GROVE - Charles H. Scott, 87, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at The Brier following an extended illness. Born March 27, 1915, in Sinks Grove, he was the son of the late Pascal and Eta Hartman Scott. Mr. Scott was a retired mail carrier and farmer, a member of Sinks Grove Baptist Church and the Rural Mail Carriers Association. He was preceded in death by his wives, Mary Lewis Scott in September 1980 and Frances Graham Scott; and a daughter, Sue Scott Cook Castle, in April 1995. Survivors include three sons, Lewis H.   • Ranny Smith, 68, of Rhodell, died Monday, April 8, 2002, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, following a long illness. Born June 9, 1933, in Wyco, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Mr. Smith was a 45-year resident of Rhodell, a U.S. Army veteran and a longtime member of the UMWA. He was also preceded in death by a son, Ricky R. Smith. Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Carol Jean Smith; two daughters, Sherry Blank-enship and Patricia Fortner, both of Rhodell; a son, Ranny Lee Smith of Coal City; and six grandchildren, Crystal, April, Becky, Cody, Faith "Shorty" and Ranny Lee Jr. Church service will be 7 p.m. Thursday at Rhodell Church of God.   • Jewel N. McPeeks Tilley, 87, of Glen Daniel, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born Aug. 21, 1914, in Wise, Va., she was the daughter of the late Jim and Beatie Williams. Mrs. Tilley spent her childhood in Wise and had been a resident of Glen Daniel for the past 25 years. She was a homemaker and a member of Fairdale Freewill Baptist Church. In her leisure time she enjoyed her flowers and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Harold R. McPeeks; her second husband, Abe Tilley; and a daughter, Fay Chesney. Campbell Thomas Allen Campbell, 52, of Sophia, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, in Princeton following an automobile accident. Born Jan. 20, 1950, in Beckley, he was the son of the late James Weldon and Lillian Sheline Campbell. Mr. Campbell spent his childhood in Crab Orchard and was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and Beckley College. He worked in the coal industry for 26 years for Pittston Coal Co. and was most recently employed by Flowers Bakery. He was a member of the UMWA and in his spare time enjoyed photography, hunting and fishing. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Ruth Campbell; three sons, Brian Campbell of Crab Orchard, Paul Moore and Steve Moore of Sophia; four grandchildren, Jude Campbell, Seth Moore, Katlyn Marie Moore and Kelsie Lynn Moore; a sister, Kay Alderman and her husband, Bob, of Crab Orchard; and three brothers, Jim Campbell and his wife, Sue, Charles Campbell and his wife, Peggy, and Ray Campbell and his wife, Delilah, all of Crab Orchard.   • Evelyn Marie Nelson, 80, of 507 N. Lilly Drive, Beckley, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a short illness. Born Sept. 21, 1921, in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late A.E. Redden and Mary Florence Bragg Redden. Mrs. Nelson was a retired employee of Dow Chemical Co. with 30 years of service. She had made her home in Cleveland for many years. She spent her winter months with her daughter, Marlene Catania, in Cape Coral, Fla., and spent her summer months with her daughter, Juanita Pyles. She was of the Methodist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Lee Nelson; two brothers, Delbert and Howard Redden; and a sister, Beulah Craddock.   • Ruth R. Payne, 97, of Blue Jay, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, in a local hospital following a long illness. Born Jan. 11, 1905, in Kire, Va., she was the daughter of the late John and Martha Payne. Miss Payne was a faithful member of Blue Jay United Methodist Church. She taught 46 years at Blue Jay-Beaver Elementary School. An avid traveler, she was known countywide for the slide presentations she made to church, club and civic organizations. She was a charter member of the Shady Spring District Women's Club and a member of the Raleigh County Retired Teachers Organization. She was preceded in death by three brothers; three sisters; and a niece whom she raised. Survivors include two nieces whom she raised, Gloria Barker of Deland, Fla., and Joyce Giambalvo of Rockville, Md.; and numerous other nieces and nephews.   • NITRO - Lula E. Price, 100, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, in a Nitro area care facility. Born Jan. 10, 1902, she was the daughter of the late Stephen and Minnie Bell. Mrs. Price worked at Montgomery Ward, but was a homemaker most of her life. She attended Concord College and received a teach-er's certificate from New River State Teachers College, now West Virginia University Tech, Montgomery. She was a former teacher of primary grades at Arnett, Jonben and Royal. She was an active member of Beckley Regular Baptist Church for many years, as well as a member of the Senior Citizens. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Otto Price Sr.; four brothers, Lewis, Jo-seph, Riley Sherman and Alva Bell; and three sisters, Clara Peters, Wanda McQuade and Edna Russell. Survivors include three children, Walter Otto Price Jr. of Liberty, Ohio, Joyce Martin of Cross Lanes and Joan Guckiean of Cincinnati; a sister, Ann Mills of Charlottesville, Va.; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.   • MINDEN - Sebert Ray "Toby" Stover Jr., 58, passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at his mother's home in Oak Hill. Born June 2, 1943, in Gatewood, he was the son of Almeda A. Dooley Stover of Oak Hill and the late Sebert Ray Stover Sr., who was a U.S. Army World War II veteran of the 82nd Airborne. He was a retired construction welder and a member of the Masonic Lodge of Mount Hope. Mr. Stover was a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran with the 82nd Airborne. The family wishes to give a special thanks to Hospice for all their help and dedication.   • UNION - Anna Mae Brown Taylor, 81, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, in Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, following an extended illness. Born March 25, 1921, in Salt Sulphur Springs, she was the daughter of the late Clarence M. and Nina Mae Broyles Brown. Mrs. Taylor was a member of St. John's Methodist Church and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur L. Taylor, on Sept. 1, 1990; three brothers, Ray, Howard and Ted Brown; a sister, Allie Pauline Brown; and two great-grandchildren, Aneka Petry and Dainelle Doss. Survivors include a son, Carl E.   • James E. Wix, 78, of Soak Creek, died Tuesday, April 10, 2002, at his residence following a sudden illness. Born Dec. 21, 1923, in Saltville, Va., he was the son of the late John Por-terfield and Nannie Lee Fields Wix. Mr. Wix had been a resident of Soak Creek since 1956 and was a retired coal miner, last working for Eastern Associated Coal. He was a U.S. Army corporal and a World War II veteran. During the war he was a POW for 434 days. He was captured Feb. 7, 1944, in Anzio, Italy. He was wounded in action on Jan. 31, 1944, and received two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. Mr. Wix was also a member of VFW Post 4326 of Midway-Sophia. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Larru and Elizabeth; two brothers, Ralph and Hubert Wix; and an infant daughter, Maybell Wix.   • MESA, Ariz. - Ella Sue Smith Dawson, 74, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 28, 2002, at Laurel Rehabilitation Center, Me-sa, following a long illness. Born Dec. 22, 1927, in Cool Ridge, she was the daughter of the late Clayton Ray and Geneva Belle Lilly. Sue was a homemaker and had been a resident of Arizona since 1965. She attended Twin Buttes Baptist Church. She especially loved children, which she showed through teaching and volunteering in children's ministries in her church. She was a sacrificing, giving person, loved by all she met. Sue's love and care touched many lives. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lonnie Smith, in 1961; her second husband, George Dawson, in 1984; three sisters, Mary Adridge Lilly, Jessie Lilly Walker and Sarah Lilly Rozell; and a brother, Cecil Ray Lilly.   • Arlie R. Lambert, 84, of Sophia, died Friday, April 12, 2002, in a Beckley area hospital following a long illness. He was a member of UMWA District 17, Local 5770, and was of the Baptist faith. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a corporal during World War II.   • Beulah F. Ripley, 100, of Daniels, died at 6 a.m. Saturday, April 13, 2002, at her home of natural causes. Born Dec. 6, 1901, in Henderson, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late William Arthur Hall and Hattie Catherine Dennison. Mrs. Ripley was a homemaker. She was raised in McCloud, Okla., and graduated from State Teachers College in 1925. She moved to West Virginia in 1926. She was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Scott Jr. and Patricia Jenkins Scott of Bud. Shawna was a lifelong resident of Bud, a 1995 honor graduate of Mullens High School and a 1999 graduate of Concord College with a degree in accounting. She was a former employee of AmeriCorps and was an office manager and accountant for Progressive Health Care of Bridgeport. Shawna was a former 4-H member, attended Bud Baptist Church and was an avid sports fan and a former cheerleader and basketball player for Herndon High School. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Zane Morris Scott; and her maternal grandparents, the Rev. Earl and Helen Jenkins.   • POQUOSON, Va. - Thomas Wiseman Jr., 76, went to be with the Lord on Friday, April 12, 2002, at his home with family by his side. He was born Jan. 5, 1926, in Affinity. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. From 1959 to 1974 he was a Peninsula resident and was employed by Union Carbide Corp. He returned to Beckley in 1974 and retired from the coal mines in 1981. He enjoyed gardening, sports and spending time with his family. He was a member of Poquoson Baptist Church since his return to the Peninsula two years ago. Prior to that Mr. Wiseman was a member of Sophia First Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Halcie Tanner Wiseman; two daughters, Sharon and Charlie Porter of Woodbridge, Va., and Lois and Bill Shields of Poquoson; two sons, Jeff and Kathy Wiseman of Morgantown and Ralph W.   • ANSTED - Clinton Earl "Pete" McGraw, 58, of Ansted, departed this life Friday, April 12, 2002 in the Raleigh General Hospital at Beckley following a short illness. Mr. McGraw was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He was a member of the Lovers Leap Baptist Church in Ansted where he was an ordained deacon. He was disabled from the Valley Camp Coal Company where he was employed as a Preparation Plant Maintenance Man. Born September 7, 1943 at Ansted, he was the son of the late Raymond Houston and Hazel Elaine Cole McGraw. He was preceded in death other than his parents by a granddaughter, Kiersten Alexander McGraw.   • POQUOSON - Thomas Wiseman, Jr., 76, went to be with the Lord Friday, April 12, 2002 at his home in Poquoson with family by his side. Born January 5, 1926 at Affinity, he was the son of the late Thomas W. and Lois Prince Wiseman. He served in the United States Navy During World War II. From 19559 to 1974 he was a Peninsula resident and was employed by Union Carbide Corporation. He returned to Beckley in 1974 and retired from the coal mines in 1981. He enjoyed gardening, sports, and spending time with his family. He was a member of the Poquoson Baptist Church since his return to the Peninsula two years ago. Prior to that Mr. Wiseman was a member of the Sophia First Baptist Church in Sophia. Mr. Wiseman is survived by his wife of 53 years, Halcie Tanner Wiseman; two daughters and sons-in-laws, Sharon and Charlie Porter of Woodbridge, Va. and Lois and Bill Shields of Poquoson; two sons, Jeff and Kathy Wiseman of Morgantown and Ralph W.   • NEWARK, Ohio - Roberta A. Angle, 74, formerly of Quinwood, died Sunday, April 14, 2002, at Newark Healthcare Centre. Born Aug. 2, 1927, at Quinwood, she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Annie Cox Taylor. Mrs. Angle was a member of the Heath United Methodist Church and the OSU Extension Service. She lived in Newark from 1954 to 1968, then moved to Richmond, Ky., until her return to Newark in 1999. Roberta assisted her husband, Lee Angle, with his construction business. She also enjoyed traveling with her husband. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Ibra Lee Angle in 1994; and a brother, Norman Taylor.   • Merle Hurst Brooks, 89, of Fairdale, died Sunday, April 14, 2002, at her home following a long illness. Born May 7, 1912, at Posey, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Emma Daniel Hurst.   • Arlie W. Henderson, 87, of Eccles, died Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at his home following a long illness. Born April 22, 1914, in Lester, he was the son of the late Kyle M. Henderson and Allie Covey Henderson Williams. Mr. Henderson grew up in the Lester and Glen Daniel area and had lived in the Eccles area since 1946. He worked in the coal mines for 44 years, having retired as a mine foreman for Westmoreland Coal Co. in 1974. He was of the Christian faith. He was a retired employee at Beckley College, now Mountain State University, in the maintenance department. He was a World War II U.S. Army and Air Force veteran.   • Pearl Sarah Smith, 85, of Coal City, died Monday, April 15, 2002, in a Beckley area hospital following a long illness. Born July 10, 1916, in Fireco, she was the daughter of the late Jehue Edward Goss and Sinah Virginia Blevins Goss. Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and of the Methodist faith. She had a green thumb and loved to grow plants and flowers. She enjoyed quilting. She resided in Whitby, Midway and Coal City during her life.   • CLINTONVILLE - Jeanetta Prudence Burnett, 89, passed away Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, following a short illness. Born Jan. 19, 1913, at Rainelle, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Martha Bare Osborne. Mrs. Burnett was a former owner and operator of Riverside Restaurant and was of the Baptist faith.   • LEBANON, Va. - Buell Cook, 77, of 683 Brumley Circle, Lebanon Manor, died Tuesday, April 16, 2002, in Russell County Medical Center. Born Feb. 22, 1925, he was the son of the late Alonzo M. Cook and Susie M. Short Cook of Wyoming County. Mr. Cook was a U.S. Army veteran having served in World War II, as a member of the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment with combat service at Normandy, the Adennes, the Rhineland and Bastogne. He had retired from Appalachian Power Co. in 1985 as unit foreman at the Clinch River Power Plant after 35 years of service. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Freda Viola Cook; four sons, Henry Lee Cook, Ernest Eugene Cook, Buell Cook Jr. and Harold Lloyd Cook; three grandsons, Kevin Eugene Cook, Jason Lee Cook and Buell Grant Cook; a brother, Alonzo M. Cook Jr. and wife, Kathy, of Dayton, Ohio; and four sisters, Geraldean Adkins of Peach Creek, Nettie Jackson and husband, Mayford, of Clendenin, Leanell Groves and husband, Brooks, of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Bertha Haught and husband, Charles "Pete," of Brenton.   • ALDERSON - James O. Meadows, 86, died Friday, April 12, 2002, at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, following a short illness. Born March 4, 1916, at Hinton, he was the son of the late Omer Lake and Frances Ball Meadows. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Sims Meadows; a daughter, Shelley Jean Meadows; a sister, Nadine Houchins; and two brothers, Eugene Meadows and Leonard Meadows. Mr. Meadows was a retired labor consultant and the owner of Meadows Consultant Service, Alderson, retiring after 27 years of business. He was also an airplane pilot having flown for Panagra Airlines, Lima, Peru, from 1943-1946, TWA, New York, from 1946-1948, Peruvian International Airlines, Lima, Peru, from 1948-1950 and was also a former employee of the United States Department of Labor, Charleston. Mr. Meadows was a 1934 graduate of Talcott High School and a member of Alderson Presbyterian Church. He attended Ansted Baptist Church, was a member of the Hayden Lodge No. 113 A.F. and A.M., Ansted, and a 50-year member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry.   • LUBBOCK, Texas - Edythe V. Kirk, 76, died Wednesday, April 17, 2002, in Lubbock. Born Nov. 16, 1925, in Jewel Ridge, Va., she was the daughter of the late Carl Joseph Stanley and Fay Burke Stanley. Mrs. Kirk married Dr. Earl H. Kirk on July 28, 1948, in Roanoke, Va. She graduated from high school in Tazewell, Va., in May 1943. She received her nursing training and her R.N. degree from Providence Hospital in Washington, D.C. After graduating from nursing school, she worked briefly at Richland (Va.) Hospital. Later she moved to Bryan-College Station and lived there for six years. She then moved to Odessa, Texas, for 35 years, where she assisted her husband in his practice. Upon his retirement in 1984, they moved to Greenville until moving to Lubbock in January 2000. She was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth C. Stanley; and her parents. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Earl Kirk; four sons, Ed Pitcher of Rowlett, Texas, Charles Kirk of Dallas, Richard Kirk of San Antonio, Texas, and Dr. Jim Kirk of Lubbock, Texas; two daughters, Charmayne McAlister of Friendswood, Texas, and Debra Kirk of Houston; a sister, Marsha Stanley of Oakton, Va.; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
