William D. Keen, 76, of Coal City, died Friday, May 18, 2001, at a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born April 12, 1925, in Canvas, he was the son of the late William French and Margaret Lucas Keen. Mr. Keen was a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a recipient of the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal and American Theater Medal. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Herbert "Ed" Keen and Thurmond "Jack" Keen. Survivors include his wife, Virginia E. Shelton Keen; a son, William "Dusty" Keen II and wife, Linda, of Coal City; three grandchildren, Mandy, Sandy and Rusty Keen, all of Coal City; and a sister, Marie Thompson of Craigsville. Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Sophia, with the Rev. Robert Combs officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.
