Kenneth D Hamrick


DAWSON - Kenneth Dale Hamrick, born May 24, 1937, in Charleston, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at home surrounded by his immediate family. Survivors include his wife, Arlene "Sue" Houchins Hamrick; a sister, Patricia Hamrick Penn of Spring Dale; a brother, James Edward Hamrick of Spring Dale; a son, Jeffrey Dale Hamrick of Chicago; a daughter, Kendra Hamrick Winchell, her husband, Dennison, and their children, Kyle and Daelyn, of Lancaster, Calif.; three stepchildren, Matthew Tasker of Kieffer, Tracie Wimer of Martinsburg and Mandy Vandall of Rupert; and seven nieces and ne-phews. He was preceded in death by his father, Gene Edward Hamrick; his mother, Ina Violet (Hanshew) Hamrick; and a sister, Barbara Lee Hamrick Walter. Ken was a graduate of Charleston High School, Trevecca Nazarene College in Nashville, Tenn., and the Na-zarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Mo. He served as a minister in Kentucky for both the Church of the Nazarene and the United Methodist Church before embarking on a 25-year career as a social worker for child protective services for Los Angeles County. After retiring to West Virginia, he served as a volunteer coach and athletic trainer at Meadow Bridge High School. He was a member of Meadow Bridge United Methodist Church and the Kiwanis Club of Meadow Bridge. An avid runner, Ken completed countless road races, including over 50 marathons around the United States and a 60-mile run from Lookout to Laidley Field in Charleston as a celebration of his 60th birthday in 1997. In lieu of flowers, the family will accept donations to the Kenneth Hamrick Memorial Fund for the construction of a new track at Meadow Bridge High School. Memorial service will be 5 p.m. Sunday, March 3, at Meadow Bridge United Me-thodist Church. Arrangements by Smathers Funeral Chapel, Rainelle.
