Arbutus Bennett


Arbutus Bennett, 87, of Beckley, died Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born Jan. 14, 1914, at Pear, she was the daughter of the late G.W. Plumley and Lena Bell Toothman Plumley. Mrs. Bennett was a retired licensed practical nurse, a former employee of Raleigh General Hospital and Dr. Grover Hedrick and a member of Calloway Heights Baptist Church. Mrs. Bennett was preceded in death by her husband, Oath-er Bennett; a son, Harless O. Bennett; a daughter, Geneva P. Adkins; a brother, Amos Plumley; and a sister, Virginia Plumley. Survivors include a son, Rob-ert I. Bennett and wife, Sally, of Beckley; six daughters, Corina M. Smith of Bellingham, Wash., Lena B. Jones and husband, Posey, of Beckley, Norma J. Hylton and husband, Ben, of Beckley, Wanda S. Crouse and husband, Malcolm, of Shady Spring, Linda L. Bailey and husband, Butch, of Beaver and Janet J. Armstrong and husband, Larry, of Daniels. Other survivors include four brothers, Rheo Plumley of Abraham, Garland Plumley of Beckley, Lloyd Plumley of Shady Spring, Lester Plumley of Abraham; four sisters, Ethel-een Adkins of Shady Spring, Rosemary Plumley of Beckley, Faye Pyatt of Beckley, Madeline Redden of Shady Spring; 25 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a special family friend, Karen Graham of Beckley. Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Calloway Heights Baptist Church, Beckley, with the Rev. Bill Parker and the Rev. Jim Wilborn officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Me-morial Gardens, Beckley. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and one hour before the service at the church. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers, and granddaughters will serve as flower girls. Arrangements by Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley.
