Quentin R. Asbury


Quentin Roosevelt Asbury, 83, of Sterling Drive, Beaver, died Monday, May 14, 2000, in a VA hospital following a long illness. Born March 21, 1918, in Montcoal, he was the son of the late J. Edward and Sarah Cantley Asbury. Mr. Asbury was a disabled U.S. Army veteran who served in World War II, and received the Pacific Theater service ribbon. In 1952, due to the health of his eldest son, Mr. Asbury relocated his family to Apache Junction, Ariz., where he worked in the copper mining industry. In Apache Junction, he was a very active civic leader. He served as president of the Lions club and was a five-year member of the Board of Education. Mr. Asbury served as president of the board in 1961-62, supervising the funding and construction of a new high school. He was also instrumental in establishing the town's Little League. In 1963, he moved to Norwood, Mo., where he owned a dairy farm, before returning to his home state in 1968. He worked many years at Ranger Fuel in Bolt and later for Beckley Mining at Glen Daniel. Mr. Asbury loved hunting and fishing and was an avid gardener. He was of the Protestant faith. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Carl, Dewey, Willard, Norman and Warren; and a sister, Minnie. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Melba Bone Asbury; two sons, Fred Asbury of Memphis, Tenn., and Paul Asbury and his wife, Brenda, of Peoria, Ariz.; a daughter, Emily Asbury Higgins and her husband, Michael, of Lexington, Va.; a brother, Norval Asbury of Ohio; a sister, Polly Alderman of Dry Creek; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Committal service will be 1 p.m. today at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum, Beckley, with the Rev. Bill Parker officiating. Entombment will follow. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to be at the mausoleum by 12:45 p.m. Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.
