HOWARD GRIMM INGRAHAM, born 31 March 1897 in Henry Camp, Pleasants County, W.Va., was the son of Douglass M. Ingraham and Lillie E. Sigler, married in Pleasants County in 1895.

Note: Medical personnel, including ambulance companies, were trained at Fort Riley, Kansas. - It is not known if Howard Ingraham contracted Spanish Influenza, but it's possible. His death is recorded in West Virginia, the cause stated as "pneumonia." - Today, it is believed that Spanish flu originated in the United States. One of the first recorded cases was on March 11, 1918, at Fort Riley. Overcrowding and unsanitary conditions created a fertile breeding ground for the virus. - 2017: "Fort Riley is believed to be the origin of the world-wide epidemic that killed millions, said Robert Smith, director of the museum division at Fort Riley."

INGRAHAM, HOWARD GRIMM, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Ingraham, was born March 31, 1897 in Pleasants County. Died October 24, 1918 at Fort Riley, Kansas, age 21 years, 6 months, and 23 days. Howard always stayed at home helping on the farm and working for the New York Petroleum company, until about two years ago, when he decided to go west to work in the oil fields, a work in which he was very efficient. He was well liked and spoken very highly of, by his employers and all who knew him. On his last trip to the west he was absent over a year. During that time he became twenty-one years of age, and registered there. After registering he came home for a short visit. On his return he was called to serve his country, August 28, and died in less than two months as a hero of a nation which he was serving. His remains were sent home in charge of Sergeant Bach of Fort Riley, who stayed until after the funeral service was conducted at his home, October 29, by Rev. S. Bennett in the presence of many friends and relatives. At home, left to mourn his loss are his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. .... (the obituary ends here.)
