CARL DEE SMITH, born 22 March 1934 in Pleasants County, W.Va., was the son of (John) Aaron Smith and (La) Verna Mae Bailey. The family is found in the 1940 census of Pleasants County, W.Va. La Verna died 18 October 1948.

OBITUARY: St. Marys Oracle, March 19, 1953 - PFC CARL SMITH, son of Aaron Smith and the late Mrs. Smith, of Broad Run, was killed in action in the Korean fighting March 9, according to word received here Tuesday by his father. - In service about a year, Pfc. Smith had completed training with an artillery unit in Camp Breckenridge, Ky., and went over seas three months ago. He would have been 19 next Thursday. - He had completed his freshman year at St. Mary's High School and worked for a year with Owens Package Service here before he enlisted in 1952. - Surviving, in addition to his father are five sisters, Mrs. Richard Davis of East Liverpool, Ohio; Rosemary, Helen Jean, Marilyn Sue and Dotty, at home, two brothers, Billy and Aaron, Jr., at home, and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Job Smith of Broad Run and Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Bailey of Greens Run.
