From HISTORY OF THE PAN-HANDLE, West Virginia, 1879, by J. H. Newton, G. G. Nichols, and A. G. Sprankle. Page 276. Contributed by Linda Cunningham Fluharty. JOSEPH GREEN oldest son of August Green, a native of Germany, came here about 1847, and first engaged himself upon his father's farm. When only nineteen years of age, being of a speculative turn of mind, he took an interest in the oil business at Cow Run, Washington County, Ohio. Here he carried on successfully for six years, selling out in 1873, when he came to Wheeling. First assisting C. Burdats and Joseph Kramer, restauranteurs, in 1876 he opened his present Centennial saloon, 1147 Market street. He married, in 1877, Frederika, the oldest daughter of John F. Franz, of the city, and by her has two children.
