From "HISTORY OF THE UPPER OHIO VALLEY," Vol. I, page 634. Brant & Fuller, 1890. PROF. OSCAR SCHMIEDEL Prof. Oscar Schmiedel, a popular teacher in Bethany college, Bethany, W. Va., was born December 1, 1861, in Germany, and came to America in the year 1881. Johanna Schmiedel is his mother, his father was Albert Schmiedel. He has two brothers and one sister, all of whom are in Germany. When he first came to this country, Prof. Schmiedel was engaged in a machine shop in Wellsburg, W. Va., where he worked for only a short time, being very unfortunate in losing his right arm while in the shop, and the following fall, 1882, he started to college at Bethany, and continued until he graduated in the year 1886, receiving the degree of B. S. After graduating he was employed in thecollege as one of the faculty. He is professor of mathmatics, and has taught for the last four years with splendid success. Our subject is a member of the Lutheran church, and also of the college fraternity. (Linda Fluharty)
