From "HISTORY OF THE UPPER OHIO VALLEY," Vol. I, page 425. Brant & Fuller, 1890. F. SCHMEICHEL F. Schmeichel, a well-known citizen of Wheeling, who has been engaged since 1874 in the furniture business with notable success, was born at Graudanz, Prussia, April 11,1841. He remained in that country until early manhood, gaining his education, and learning the trade of cabinet-maker, at which he became skilled. In 1870, he landed at New York, and then came directly to Wheeling, where he worked as a journey-man for about five months, and then engaged in stair building. In 1873, he and Frederick Behrens joined their fortunes and opened a cabinet shop for themselves, and in 1874 opened a furniture store at 2267 Market street, which they conducted in connection with the shop and also engaged in upholstering. In 1883 Mr. Behrens died and Mr. Schmeichel took the proprietorship and management of the entire business, which he has since conducted. He now has one of the leading houses of the city, and is still doing business at his old location, carrying a full stock of the goods usually found at first class establishments of this kind. He is a valued citizen, is a member of the Reformed church and of the Knights of Pythias and Order of Red Men. Mr. Schmeichel was married in 1873, to Louise Ulrich, who was born in Germany and to their union have been born seven children. (Linda Fluharty)
