Ohio County, West Virginia Biography of William R. Holliday. WILLIAM R. HOLLIDAY came to Wheeling in 1833. He was born near Carlisle, Cumberland county, Pa., in 1800. His parents were Robert and Rebecca H., who settled in Jefferson county, Ohio, in 1808. The former died in Belmont county, Ohio, in his ninety-fourth year; the latter died in 1826, at the age of sixty-two. Our subject, prior to his arrival at Wheeling, was a farmer, but since that time has been associated with the manufacturing and government interests. He was connected with Ritchie and Wilson and Sweeney's establish- ments for over fourteen years. He acted as United States inspector of tobacco and cigars for four years. For eight years he served as surveyor of customs. He is now the deputy surveyor of the port, retiring from the former position on account of age.
