He was born on the same farm on which his father was born and which he now operates. His birth occurred April 24, 1830. The parents were Otho and Jemima (Bukey) Hedges. The father was born in the year 1788 and died in 1859; the mother was born about the year 1800 on Short creek, Ohio county, W. Va. Mr. Hedges's paternal grandfather was Charles Hedges, a native of Maryland, where he was born about the year 1752. He came to West Virginia at an early date, being one of its first settlers. His maternal grandfather was John Bukey, of Pennsylvania, and the grandmother was Agnes Bukey. Otho and Jemima Hedges had six children, three of whom still survive. They are: Rebecca (Bukey), Mary J. (Coleman) and C. B. In the year 1851 Mr. Hedges espoused Hattie Walker, who was born in Brooke county, W. Va., in the year 1836, the daughter of Montgomery and Jane (Hedges) Walker, both natives of Brooke county, W. Va. Mr. and Mrs. Hedges are the parents of five children: Burton, Jennie W. (Wells), Stella (Dunlap), Mollie J. (Wells), and Lulu (Waddell). Mr. Hedges has always been engaged in farming, in which pursuit he has met with much success, having a very fine farm in the highest state of cultivation. His career has ever been marked by strict integrity, and he has the esteem of all with whom he comes in contact. (Linda Fluharty)
