Ohio County, West Virginia - Biographies of John Caldwell & Sons. JOHN CALDWELL & SONS JOHN CALDWELL was born in 1787, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. At an early age he came to West Virginia and settled in Richland district, Ohio county, where he labored with the pioneers in clearing away the forests and preparing the country for cultivation. In March, 1817, he was married to Rebecca Hedges, by whom he has raised a family of eight children. He became at an early period of his life a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Short creek. Died in 1871. JOSEPH CALDWELL, a son of John, was born July 23, 1820; married October 17, 1844, to a Miss Ridgely, and has reared a family of four children. WM. H. CALDWELL, also a son of John, was born August 16, 1846; received a liberal common school education; was married March 14, 1866, to Clarinda Hupp, of Brooke county, West Virginia; he is the father of four children. Mr. Caldwell was elected township clerk in 1868; filled the office of county commissioner from 1874 to 1876, and was called to the county assessorship in 1876, which term of office will expire in 1880.
