Adkins, Bernie
Bernie Adkins, 63, of Southside, formerly of Seth, Boone County,
W.Va., died Saturday, April 15, 1995, at his home.
He was a son of the late William and Cephia Adkins of Comfort,
W.Va. .He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Joe and
Hubert Adkins, and a sister, Josie Adkins.
He was a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA.
He is survived by his wife, Tilda J. Adkins; daughter and son-in-law,
Bonnie L. and George O. Dabney of Southside; two sons and daughters-in-law,
Steven L. and Julia Adkins of Southside, Larry D. and Janet Adkins
of Columbia, S.C.; sister, Laura May of Comfort; three brothers,
Clifford, Ira and Henry, all of Comfort; five grandchildren and
numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Wednesday, 2 p.m., at the Mount Hermon Baptist
Church, Joe's Creek Road, Comfort, W.Va., with the Rev. Lonzo
Meadows officiating. Burial will be in Pineview Cemetery, Orgas,
Boone County.

Adkins, Donald Densyl
Donald Densyl Adkins, 65, of Rt. 2, Wayne, W.Va., died Wednesday,
April 19, 1995, at St. Mary's Hospital.
Born Dec. 28, 1929, in Wayne County, he was a son of the late
Audie and Alice (Leep) Adkins. He was also preceded in death by
two sisters, Jo Ann Adkins and Bertie Porter.
Retired from Steel of West Virginia, he was an Army veteran of
the Korean Conflict and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze
Star. He was a member of V.F.W. Post 1064, and was a lifetime
member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter.
Surviving are his wife, Betty (Gilkerson) Adkins; daughter, Kathy
Honaker of Mason; two sons and daughters-in-law, Densyl and Toni
Adkins of Huntington, Gregory and Rebecca Adkins of Wayne; sister,
Zula Bryant of Huntington; three brothers, Forney Adkins of Barboursville,
Harlan Adkins of Huntington, Franklin Adkins of Massachusetts;
stepmother, Reba Adkins of East Lynn; four half sisters, a half
brother, five step brothers and step sisters, and eight grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday, 1 p.m., at Morris Funeral Home Chapel,
with the Rev. Truman Adkins officiating. Burial will be in the

Adkins, Elizabeth
Elizabeth 'Libby' (Selby) Adkins, 73, of Point Pleasant, died
Sunday, April 9, 1995, in Pleasant Valley Hospital.
Born Jan. 9, 1922, in Huntington, she was a daughter of the late
Russell and Hazel M. (Neff) Selby. She was also preceded in death
by her husband, Robert J. Adkins, who died in 1984, and a great-nephew.
A member of the Mirror Lake Christian Church in St. Petersburg,
Fla., she attended the Henderson Church of Christ, and was a 22-year
employee of H&R Block, where she served as a tax preparer.
Surviving are three sisters and a brother-in-law, Rosa Lee and
Guy Finley of Apple Grove, Freda Colegrove of Gallipolis Ferry,
Frances Macy of Indianapolis, Ind.; brother and sister-in-law,
Earl and Eleanor Selby of Apple Grove; four nieces, five nephews,
12 great-nieces and six great-nephews.
The funeral will be Wednesday, 2 p.m., at the Wilcoxen Funeral
Home with Dr. Michael Colegrove and Evangelist Lloyd 'Sam' Gwinn
officiating. Burial will be in the Beale Chapel Cemetery. Friends

Adkins, Ercell Greer
Ercell Greer Adkins, 85, of Point Pleasant, WV died Saturday,
August 5, 1995, at Care Haven Nursing Care Unit, Point Pleasant,
WV.
She was a 45 year member of the Oak Grove United Methodist Church
and also attended Heights United Methodist Church. She lived for
years in the Plain Valley area and later a resident of Point Pleasant,
WV.
Born February 28, 1910, she was a daughter of the late John William
and Carrie Mac (Greer) Greer. She was also preceded in death by
her husband, Clarence Adkins; and two brothers, Randolph and Lionel
'Jake' Greer.
Survivors include one sister and brother-in-law, Lula and Homer
Reed of Point Pleasant; WV; a brother, Robert E. Greer of New
Haven, WV; several nieces and nephews and a host of neighbors
and friends.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 8, 1995, at the Crow-Hussell
Funeral Home with the Reverends John Icenhower, Bennie Stevens,
Joanne Home and Louis Hussell officiating. Burial will follow
in Suncrest Cemetery.

Adkins, Eugene F.
Eugene F. Adkins, 70, of St. Albans died Tuesday, May 23, 1995,
at home after a long illness.
He retired from Libby-Owens Ford Company with 30 years experience
and was president of Local Union 174 United Glass and Ceramic
workers. He was a clerk for the House Judiciary for 13 years in
the House of Delegates, a World War II veteran with a Purple Heart,
life member and charter member of V.F.W. Post 6418 in St. Albans,
a member of American Legion Post 73 and was a Protestant. He had
served on the State Democrat Executive Committee and as a member
of the Kanawha County Democrat Executive Committee from St. Albans.
He also served as chairman of the Citizens Party in St. Albans
for over 20 years.
Survivors include his wife, Frances J. Adkins; a son, Richard
K. Adkins of St. Petersburg, FL; sister, Kathleen Barker of Emmonds,
WV; two brothers, Russell Adkins of New Port Richey, FL and Charles
E. Adkins of Point Pleasant; and two grandchildren.
Service will be Friday, May 26, at 1 p.m. at Casdorph & Curry
Funeral Home, St. Albans, with Rev. John Hoskins officiating.
Burial will be in Cunningham Memorial Park in St. Albans with
military rites by V.F.W. 6418 and American Legion Post 73. Friends

Sarah Jane Adkins, 89, of Sandy Hook, KY died Friday, July 14,
1995, in Elliottsville, KY.
Born February 9, 1906 in Elliott County, KY, she was a daughter
of the late Emmett and Deama (Keeton) Spencer. She was also preceded
in death by her husband, William G. Adkins.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Lonnie S. and Jackie
Bowling of Point Pleasant; a grandson and a great-granddaughter.
Service will be Monday, July 24, at 1 p.m. at Lewis-Ferguson Funeral
Home, Sandy Hook, KY, with Rev. Willie Ison officiating. Burial

Aeiker, William C. Jr.
William C. Aeiker, Jr., 49, of Point Pleasant died Friday, November
3, 1995, at Pleasant Valley Hospital following a long illness.
Born February 12, 1946 in Henderson, he was a son of the late
William C. Sr. and Dreama (Carter) Aeiker. He was a graduate of
Point Pleasant High School and attended Riverview Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Angela M. (Harmon) Aeiker of Point
Pleasant; two sisters, Carol Y. Higginbotham of Point Pleasant
and Celia S. Roush of Auburndal, FL; and maternal grandparents,
George and Auga Parham of Orlando, FL.

Akers, Paul
Paul Akers, 77, of Point Pleasant died Saturday, April 29, 1995,
at Pleasant Valley Hospital.
Born September 21, 1917 in Black, WV (Mercer County), he was a
son of the late William Bailey and Mary Jane (Akers) Akers.
He was a retired pipefitter and welder on construction and a member
of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Local 521 in Huntington.
He is survived by two daughters, Pauletta Bums of Point Pleasant
and Georgene Plantz of Gallipolis; three sisters, Ethel Smith
of Point Pleasant, with whom she made her home, Myrtle Rhodes
and Macy Adkins, both of Point Pleasant; six grandchildren; three
great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Private graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, May
1, at Kirkland Memorial Gardens, near Point Pleasant, with Rev.
Louis A. Hussell officiating. Burial will follow. There will be
no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Crow-Hussell
Funeral Home.
Alexander, Robert T.
Robert T. Alexander, I, 52, of Gallipolis Ferry, died Wednesday,
May 3, 1995, at his home.
He was a truck driver for various transport companies.
Born Aug. 6, 1942, in Robertsburg, he was a son of the late Marion
W. and Sylvia (Casto) Alexander.
Survivors include his wife, Sandy K. (Carpenter) Alexander; two
sons, Robert T. Alexander, II, of Gallipolis Ferry and Marion
Alexander of Kings Mountain, N.C.; three daughters, Liz Mullins
of Grove City, Ohio, Julie Carter of Pomeroy, Ohio, Cheryl Jones

Allen, Angela Michelle
Angela Michelle Allen, 32, of Leon died at her home Thursday,
April 27, 1995.
Born October 17, 1962 in Louisville, KY, she was a daughter of
Rome E. 'Frank' Allen, Jr. and Delores 'Debbie' (Judd) Allen,
both of Corydon, Indiana.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by a companion, Ricky
Brooks; four daughters, Brandywayne Allen, Natasha Cole, Angie
Cole and Ivy Brooks, all at home; a son, Kalev Cole, at home;
four brothers, Victor Allen of North Carolina, Tony and Michael
Allen of Georgia, and Ernest Williams III of Michigan; two sisters,
Deborah Cheatham of Indiana and Alisha Stephenson of Alabama.
A memorial and graveside service will be held at El Bethel Cemetery
in Marengo, Indiana, at a later date, for the convenience of the
family. Arrangements are under the direction of the Crow-Hussell

Goldie Allen, 80, of Beckley, W.Va., died Monday, Jan. 2, 1995,
at her residence, following a long illness.
She was a Protestant.
Surviving are four daughters, Lorene Spradling of New Haven, Thelma
Kirk of Beaver, W.Va., Carol Harmon of Beckley, Terri McCormick
of Flat Top, W.Va.; two sons, Cecil Allen of Glen Daniel, W Va.;

Charlotte Cartmill Allinder, 92, of St. Albans, WV died Saturday,
May 6, 1995, in St. Albans after a long illness.
She was a member of the Marlang Church of Christ in St. Albans.
Born July 9, 1902, she was a daughter of the late Charles N. and
Emma (Musgrave) Cartmill. She was also preceded in death by her
husband, Joe Arthur Allinder.

Anson, Helen J.
Helen J. Anson, 79, of Emerald Isle, N.C., and formerly of Point
Pleasant, died Sunday, June 11, 1995, at the home of her daughter,
after a long illness.
Born Nov. 20, 1915, in Norris City, Ill., she was a daughter of
the late Lawrence and Leora A. (Glines) Bolerjack. She was also
preceded in death by her husband, Charles Keith Anson, who died
Sept. 22, 1992.
While a resident of Point Pleasant, she attended the Main Street
Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Marilee and Lew Wiley
of Emerald Isle, N.C.; and two grandchildren, Karyn Reeves and
Philip Wiley.

Lindbergh 'Lindy' Arnold, 66, of Mason, died Saturday, July 1,
1995 at Fort Saunders Medical Center, Sevierville, Tenn.
A retired coal miner, he was a member of the Mason United Methodist
Church and the Bells and Beaus Square Dancing Club of Pomeroy,
Ohio.
Born Sept. 6, 1928, in Logan County, W.Va., he was a son of Effie
(Arnold) Black of Rutland, Ohio, and the late Fred Arnold. He
was also preceded in death by a son, Gary Arnold, granddaughter,
Whitney VanMatre, three brothers and a sister.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Donna Layle
Arnold; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Rick VanMatre of Greenfield,
Ohio; brother, Dale Arnold of Pomeroy; sisters, Stacie Arnold
of Pomeroy, Ruby Jones of Mason, Alice Bowling of Jackson, Ohio;

Gladys O. Artis, 74, of Mason, died Sunday, Feb. 19, 1995, in

She was a retired nurses aide, member of the Mason United Methodist
Church and United Methodist Women.
Born Oct. 13, 1920, in Accoville, W.Va., she was a daughter of
the late Bryan and Ruby Gilbert. She was also preceded in death
by her husband, Denver B. Artis, who died in 1980, and a brother,
Donald Gilbert.

James R. 'Jimmy' Ball, 48, of New Haven, died Sunday February
19, 1995 at Veterans Memorial Hospital.
Born June 21, 1946 in New Haven, he was a son of James H. and
Leona F. (Powell) Ball of New Haven.
He was a machine operator for Conrail Railroad, a member of American
Legion Smith-Capehart Post 140 of New Haven, V.F.W. Stewart-Johnson
Post 9926 of Mason, a U.S. Army veteran serving in Korea and he
worked part-time at the New Haven Legion.
Surviving in addition to his parents are a daughter, Lindsay R.

Born November 6, 1924 in West Virginia, she was a daughter of

She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Oscar J. Workman
and Ira Workman.

Mary Edith (Baker) Barr, 48, of Leon Route, Mason County, died
Wednesday, Aug. 16, 1995 at Pleasant Valley Hospital after a long
illness.
Born Feb. 15, 1947, in Mineral Wells, W.Va., she was a daughter
of the late David Henry Baker and Hazel Christine (Thornton) Baker.
She was formerly a nurses aide at Eldercare in Ripley and a member
of family of God Church in Cottageville.
She is survived by her husband, Charles B. Barr; son, Johnnie
Michael Jeffries of Gay; two daughters, Veronica Casto of Gay
and Christina Casto of Statts Mill; three brothers, Paul Andrew
Baker of Newark, Ohio, Henry Baker of Severville, TN, and Johnnie

of Gay and Daisy McFadden of Evans; three stepchildren, Charles

Della Barrett, 78, Accokeek, Md., formerly of Huntington, died
Friday, April 14, 1995 at her daughter's residence.
The daughter of the late Charlie and Laura Hawkins Birchfield,
she was a homemaker.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Ralph
Priddy of Accokeek; two grandchildren, Rev. Jerry Priddy of Accokeek,
and Stephanie Greever of Waldorf, Md.; and two great-grandchildren;
three sisters, Alma Birchfield of Southside, Maxine Perdue of
Huntington, and Estella Leport of Henderson; and a brother, Harold
Birchfield of Southside.
She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Birtus Barrett;
and by a brother, Kenneth Birchfield.

Mrs. Gilda G. Bauer, 62, of Point Pleasant, died Tuesday, Jan.
10, 1995 at Pleasant Valley Hospital.
Born Jan. 9, 1933 in Point Pleasant, she was a daughter of the
late Warren and Charlotte (Swisher) Miller. She was also preceded
in death by a daughter, Melissa Lee Bauer; sister, Martha McDaniel;
and brother, John F. Miller.
She was a member of the Gallia Twirlers Square Dance Club.
Surviving are her husband, Mack A. Bauer; daughter and son-in-law,
Jeannie and Terry Sayre, Point Pleasant; sister, Charlotte Erlewine

Sidney E. 'Perch' Bauer, 79, of Leon died Tuesday, March 21, 1995,
at his home after a long illness.
Born September 4, 1915 in McConnelsville, Ohio, he was a son of
the late Vallie and Elizabeth R. (Durst) Bauer.
He was retired from Foote Mineral, where he worked for 25 years.
He also worked at Malleable Iron and was a farmer. He was a member
of the Baden Presbyterian Church in Leon.
He was also preceded in death by an infant daughter; a son, Charles
Ray; a brother, Vallie, Jr.; a grandson and two great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Louise (Buckalew) Bauer of Leon; two
sons and daughters-in-law, Vallie R. and Iris Bauer of Columbus,
Ohio, and Sidney E. Jr. and Nancy Bauer of Letart; three daughters

Erna Lou (Tucker) Beaver, 85, of Leon, died Saturday, Dec. 31,1994,
in Holzer Medical Center.
Born July 5, 1909, in Mason County, she was a daughter of the
late Dan and Lou (Stover) Tucker. She was also preceded in death
by her husband, James 'Mike' Beaver, Sr.
She was a homemaker and attended the Church of Christ in Christian
Union of Leon.
Surviving are four sons, DeWitte Beaver of St. Louis, MO, Jim
Beaver of Buffalo, W.Va., Bill Beaver of St. Clairsville, Ohio,
Kermit Beaver of Columbus, Ohio; three half-sisters; Louise McCoy
of Buffalo; Catherine Higginbotham of Buffalo, Ruth Null of Eleanor;
19 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held Monday, Jan. 2, 1995, at the Raynes Funeral
Home, with the Rev. Herb Capehart officiating. Burial was in the
Leon Cemetery.
Beckette, David Roy
David Roy Beckett, 43, of Rt. 2, Letart, died Thursday, May 11,
1995, at the Veterans Memorial Hospital in Pomeroy.
Born Nov. 12, 1951, in Wheeling, he was a son of Roy Beckett,
Bolivar, Ohio, and the late Dorothy (Dunfee) Beckett.
He was a coal miner for 20 years and member of the UMWA.
Survivors, in addition to his father, include his wife, Karen
Ruth (Bittinger) Beckett; two daughters, Kareena Suzann Beckett
and January Snow Beckett, both at home; brother, Donald Beckett
of Freeport, Ohio; and three sisters, Margaret Wilcox of Dover,
Ohio, Janice Larrick of Kipling, Ohio, Nancy Voorhies of Gnadenhutten,
Ohio.
The funeral will be Sunday, 1:30 p.m., at the Foglesong Funeral
Home with the Rev. Joanne Horne officiating. Burial will be in

Beckner, Mildred Frances
Mildred Frances Beckner, 91, of Gallipolis Ferry, died Monday,
Oct. 16, 1995, at the Pleasant Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation
Center.
Born Nov. 23, 1903, she was a daughter of the late William C.
Jordan and Sybil (Smith) Jordan. She was also preceded in death
by her husband, James C. Beckner, a son, two sisters and a brother.
A member of the Boyd Memorial Christian Church in Charleston,
she was a housewife.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, William F. and Phyllis
Beckner of Gallipolis Ferry; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday, 1 p.m., at Spring
Hill Cemetery, Huntington, with Rev. William 'Bud' Hatfield officiating.

Benz, Elizabeth
Elizabeth Clark (Shaw) Benz, 90, of Point Pleasant, formerly of
New York City, NY, died Thursday, March 30, 1995, at the Pleasant
Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Point Pleasant.
She was a retired architect in New York and attended Riverside
Baptist Church in New York City. She was a graduate of Wellesley
College in Massachusetts and also attended Harvard and Columbia
Universities.
Born December 5, 1904 in New York City, she was a daughter of
the late Robert A. and Myrtle (Wilhelm) Shaw. She was also preceded
in death by her husband, Fred Benz.
She is survived by three cousins, Roberta 'Bobby' Holzer of Gallipolis,
Ohio, Nedra Jones of Point Pleasant and Joanette Drake of Yellow
Springs, Ohio.
Graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 1, at Kirkland
Memorial Gardens. Rev. Louis A. Hussell officiated. Arrangements
were under the direction of Crow-Hussell Funeral Home, Point Pleasant.
Berkley, Fay
Fay Berkley, 101, of Point Pleasant, died Saturday, November 25,
1995, at Pleasant Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Point
Pleasant.
She was a homemaker and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church
in Point Pleasant. She was a former member of the Women's Club
of Point Pleasant; American Legion Auxiliary and the Pleasant
Valley Hospital Auxiliary.
Born November 25, 1894 in Galion, Ohio, she was a daughter of
the late Alpheus Adam and Mae Elizabeth (Brown) Tracht. In addition
to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband,
Harry E. Berkley; a daughter, Jane Comstock; two brothers, Charles
F. and Clenden S. Tracht; and two sisters, Lois and Esther Tracht.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Jack
Buxton of Point Pleasant; a son and daughter-in-law, H. William
and Julie Berkley of Tucson, Arizona; nine grandchildren; two
step-great-grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 28, at Crow-Hussell
Funeral Home, Point Pleasant, with Rev. Steven E. Dorsey officiating.
Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home Tuesday from 12:30
p.m. until service time.
Berry, David Wayne
David Wayne Berry, 40, of Scott Depot, died Tuesday, June 6, 1995,
at St. Francis Hospital in Charleston.
He was a U.S. Postal Inspector in Charleston, a member of Teays
Valley Missionary Church, and a charter member and participant
in the Charleston Distance Run. The 1995 Charleston Distance Run
will be dedicated to him.
Survivors include his wife, Lisa J. Berry; a son, Jesse W. Berry,
at home; a daughter, Rachel K. Berry, at home; parents, Gale and
Betty Berry of Dunbar; a foster grandmother, Grace Brown of New
Haven; and two sisters, Cynthia Berry of Barboursville and Jill
Chapman of South Charleston.
A memorial service was held Saturday, June 10, at Teays Valley

Leo C. Bias, 79, of Zephyr Hills, Fla., formerly of Point Pleasant
and Huntington, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 1995, at East Pasco Medical
Center.
Born June 29, 1916 in Danville, W.Va., he was a Navy veteran of
World War II and a retired employee of Appalachian Power Company.
He formerly attended Trinity United Methodist Church of Point
Pleasant, and was a member of the First Christian Church in Zephyr
Hills. He was a life member of the Elks Club, and had moved to
Florida 15 years ago.
Surviving are his wife, Rosanna Bias; daughter, Tina Blood of
Wrentham, Mass.; son, Randy Bias of Zephyr Hills; sister, Mrs.
John Cloeman of Elkview, W.Va.; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at the First Christian Church in Zephyr
Hills. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any local
arthritis foundation in Mr. Bias' name.
Birchfield, Anita Grace
Anita Grace Birchfield, 80, of Henderson, died Tuesday, Jan. 17,
1995, in Pleasant Valley Hospital.
Born July 3, 1914, in Columbus, Ohio, she was a daughter of the
late Clarence and Martha (Plants) Hall. She was also preceded
in death by her husband, Cecil; four brothers, James, Carl, Clarence
and Billie Hall; an infant sister and two grandchildren.
A member of the Lifeline Apostolic Church, she was a retired employee
of Pleasant Valley Hospital.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Philip
Davis of Gallipolis, Sally and Gerald Meeks of Gallipolis Ferry;
three sons, Charles H. and Diane Birchfield of Gallipolis Ferry,
Cecil A. and Betty Birchfield, Jr. of Gallipolis Ferry, Kenneth

Mary Maude Birchfield, 85, of Point Pleasant, died Friday, June
2, 1995, in Pleasant Valley Hospital.
Born March 15, 1910 in Mason County, she was a daughter of the
late Lacy George and Addie Leport Henry. She was also preceded
in death by her husband, Worley Birchfield, a sister and one brother.
She was a former employee of Shear and Amherst as a riverboat
cook.

Nancy Thomas of Reno, Nevada, Ona M. Fuller of Ironton, Ohio,

Pauline Waugh Bird, 78, of New Haven died Monday, July 17, 1995,

Born March 31. 1917 in Harrisburgh, VA, she was a daughter of
the late Charles and Bertha (Lambert) Waugh. She was a homemaker
and a member of New Haven Church of God.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Loren G. Bird;
two daughters, Nancy and Virginia Bird; a son, Loren D. Bird;
two brothers and two sisters.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband,

Linda Blankenship, 36, of Rt. 3, Leon, died Friday, May 26, 1995,
in the General Division CAMC, Charleston, following a short illness.

sisters and brothers.

Blessing, Roy E
Roy E. Blessing, 81, of Point Pleasant, died Monday morning, Sept.
11, 1995, at Pleasant Valley Hospital.
Born March 2, 1914, in Cleveland, Ohio, he was a son of the late
Charles E. and May Flower Polsley Blessing. He was also preceded
in death by a sister, Rose Blessing Roush, and brother, Gordon
Blessing.
He was a retired agent of over 33 years of Peoples Life Insurance
Company; and was a contributing writer and former employee of
the Point Pleasant Register for over 60 years. He was a 1932 graduate
of Point Pleasant High School and a 1988 graduate of the University
of Hard Knocks. He was an active member and treasurer of the Gideons
- Point Pleasant Camp since 1951; a 50-year member of the Point
Pleasant Odd Fellows Lodge No. 33, where he was secretary for
over 43 years; on the board of directors at the West Virginia
State Farm Museum and a volunteer worker; and member of the board
of directors of the Point Pleasant Chapter - AARP.
He was a member of the Heights United Methodist Church, where
he taught the Friendship Sunday School class and held various
offices in the church. He was a United Methodist Conference Layman
of the Year for the Huntington District in 1969, and the West
Virginia Conference Layman of the Year in 1974. He was given a
life membership in the United Methodist Men in 1985. Blessing
was a lay delegate to 10 Quadrennial Conferences of the United
Methodist Church; a delegate to the World United Methodist Conference
in Dublin, Ireland, in 1976; a delegate to numerous West Virginia
annual conferences; and served on commissions for the United Methodist
conference. He was the Communication Coordinator for the Huntington
District-West Virginia United Methodist newspaper. Blessing was
known for visiting the sick and families who had lost members
through death; helped many people prepare income tax forms; and
was a writer of poetry.
He is survived by his wife, Annis M. (Morrison) Blessing; two
daughters and sons-in-law, Delores Ann and Jerald McCallister
of Williamstown, W.Va., Myrtle May and Reinhold Guenther of Barboursville;
son and daughter-in-law, William E. and Allene Blessing of Harrisonburg,
Va.; brother, Hale Blessing of Point Pleasant; seven grandchildren
and one great-grandson.
The funeral will be Wednesday, 2 p.m., at the Heights United Methodist

Homer L. Boles, 74, of Columbus, Indiana, died Monday, May 29,
1995, at his residence.
Born March 5, 1921, in Leon, he was a son of Lewis and Louisa
(Schultze) Boles. He married Ura L. Duffin July 12, 1943, in Columbus,
who preceded him in death on May 20, 1990.
Employed by Cummins Engine Company for 33 years, he retired in
1983. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter
Day Saints in Columbus, and the CREAK Club.

Born October 26, 1933 in Evans, WV, she was a daughter of the
late Wallie and Maria (Miller) Herdman.
She was a 17 year employee of the former Heck's Department Store
in Point Pleasant, WV; a member of V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary 3531;
and a member of the Ladies of the Moose in Point Pleasant, WV.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by
her first husband, Paul Hoffman, who died April 12, 1982.
She is survived by her husband, W..K. "Bill" Bowers;
one daughter and son-in-law, Lois and James Board of Letart, WV;
a son and daughter-in-law, John W. and Debbie Hoffman of Mt. Alto,

Joseph C. Bray, 78, of Henderson, died Sunday morning, March 19,
1995, at the Holzer Medical Center.
He was a retired carpenter, who followed construction and was
a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of
America, Local Union 1159, Point Pleasant. He was also a member
of the Concord Baptist Church.
Born Oct. 18, 1916 in Fayette County, he was a son of the late
C. Birt and Rachael (Seelinger) Bray. In addition to his parents,
he was also preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Rhema (Glover)
Bray, three brothers, and three sisters.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Lynn and Garland
E. Bechtle of Henderson, Jo Kathleen and Paul E. Yoder of Gallipolis

Clara Hersman Brown, 89, Rt. 1, Bidwell, Ohio, died Friday, Aug.
4, 1995 in Holzer Medical Center.
Born Feb. 7, 1906 in Apple Grove, she was the daughter of the
late Johnny and Electa Hedge Flora. She was also preceded in death
by her husbands, the Rev. William Hersman in 1955, and Asa Brown
in 1979.
Surviving are four sons, Cecil (Naomi) Hersman of Doylestown,
Ohio, Donald (Juanita) Hersman of Port Isabel, Texas, Paul (Frances)
Hersman of Vinton, Ohio, and the Rev. Robert (Diane) Hersman of
Bidwell; two daughters, Violet Taylor of Chillicothe, Ohio, and
Martha (Hayward) McComas of Vinton; 17 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren;
two brothers, William Flora of Apple Grove, and Bacil Duncan of
Marion, Ohio; and two sisters, Faye Fisher of Gallipolis Ferry,
and Opal Stover of Apple Grove.
She was also preceded in death by a son, three daughters, three
brothers and one sister.
Services were held at 11 a.m. today in the Morgan Center Christian
Holiness Church, with Rev. Mike Thompson officiating. Burial was
in the Vinton Memorial Park. Arrangements were by the McCoy-Moore
Funeral Home, Vinton. Pallbearers were grandsons Larry Taylor,
Marc Harrel, Mark Hersman, Dannie Hersman, Robbie Stanley, Scott

Bernice Pauline Buck, 87, of Point Pleasant and formerly of Rutland,
Ohio died Thursday, November 23, 1995, at Julia's Personal Care

She was a homemaker and had been married for 70 years, to Charles
William Buck, Sr., who died June 11, 1995.
Born January 4, 1908 in Rutland, Ohio, she was a daughter of the
late J.W. and Jessie (Price) Young. In addition to her husband
and parents, she was also preceded in death by two brothers, Robert
H. and J.A. Young Sr. and a sister, Lurene Kennedy.
She is survived by a son, Charles William Buck, Jr. of Point Pleasant;

Charles William Buck, Sr., 87, of Point Pleasant and formerly

He was a retired barber in Rutland and a United States Navy veteran
of World War II.
Born August 17, 1907 in Pomeroy, Ohio, he was a son of the late
William H. Buck and Jessie (Archer) Buck Russell. In addition
to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sister, Mabel
Zak and his step-father.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Bernice Pauline (Young)
Buck; a son, Charles William Buck, Jr. of Point Pleasant; two
daughters, Betty Phillips of Scottsdale, AZ and Nancy Pope of
Point Pleasant; a brother, Sam Russell of Urbana, Ohio; a sister,

Born March 30, 1920 in Mason County, he was the son of the late
Rev. Charles and Gertie (McCall) Buck. He was retired from Public
Employee System in Mason, Ohio and was a member of Oma Chapel
Church in Grimms Landing.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ruby (Mayo) Back.
Survivors include three sisters, Irena Karcher of Glouster, OH,
Hazel D. Craig and Margaret Williams, both of Buffalo; and two
brothers, Rev. Charles H. Buck of Grimms Landing and Paul Buck
of Point Pleasant.
Service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 28, at the Oma Chapel
Church with Rev. Belford Jividen and Rev. Charles Roush officiating.
Burial will follow in Tucker Cemetery, Grimms Landing. Friends

Bucklew, Homer Earl
Homer Earl Bucklew, 95, of Point Pleasant, formerly of Terra Alta,
W.Va., died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 1995, at the home of his daughter,
with whom he made his home.
A retired farmer and carpenter, he attended the Good Shepherd
United Methodist Church and the Pine Grove United Methodist Church
of Terra Alta.
Born Feb. 13, 1900, in Preston County, he was a son of the late
George W. Bucklew and Mary E. (Ford) Bucklew. He was also preceded
in death by his wife, Clara (Nine) Bucklew, who died in 1979,
five brothers and two sisters.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Edna Lipscomb and Carl
Jefferson of Point Pleasant; four grandchildren, three step-grandchildren,
seven great-grandchildren, five step great-grandchildren; and
one sister, Opha Ridenour of Kingwood, W.Va.
The funeral will be Friday, 2 p.m., at the Pine Grove United Methodist
Church in Terra Alta, with the Rev. Ronald Daughtery officiating.
Burial will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at

Buffington, Sara
Sara Heath Covert Buffington, 73, of Point Pleasant, died Thursday,
August 7, 1995, at Holzer Medical Center after a short illness.
Born May 16, 1922 in Henlawson, WV, she was a daughter of the
late Alonzo and Loma D. (Calhoun) Covert.
She was a retired school teacher, a 1939 graduate of Logan High
School and a 1943 graduate of Marshall
University. She was an elementary teacher and taught in Mason
County since 1943 and in Washington, D.C. during World War II.
She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Alpha Chapter; West Virginia
Education Association, retired current liaison to WVEA membership
study committee; WV Education Association, National Education
Association and held various offices over the years; was state
president of the WV Association of Classroom Teachers 1978-79;
Board of Directors, Mason County Public Library; and Trinity United
Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband, William 'Bill' R. Buffington of
Point Pleasant; two daughters, Pam Warfield of Wheeling, WV, and
Marty Hudson of Delaware, Ohio; a son, Bill Buffington of Point
Pleasant; a sister, Mrs. Donald 'Biddy' Whisler of San Bemadino,
CA; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 19, at 11 a.m.
at Trinity United Methodist Church with Rev. Steven Dorsey and
Rev. Tally Hanna officiating. The family will receive friends
beginning at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions
may be made to the Mason County Library or the scholarship fund

Buffington, William R
William R. Buffington, Sr., 77, a prominent Point Pleasant businessman,
died Saturday, October 28, 1995, at Pleasant Valley Nursing and
Rehabilitation Center.
Born June 7, 1918 in Mason County, he was a son of the late Earl
Everett and Mary Florence (Roush) Buffington.
He was the owner and operator of Buffington Greenhouses for over
40 years. He was a charter member of the Kiwanis Club, past president
of the Hidden Valley Country Club, American Legion Post 23, a
member of the Minturn Lodge 19 A.F. & A.M., and a former employee
of the Point Pleasant Register. He was a 1936 graduate of Point
Pleasant High School and a graduate West Virginia Tech, where
he played football, baseball and basketball; and he was a World
War II U.S. Navy veteran.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Sara Heath (Covert)
Buffington; and a brother, Joe Buffington.
Survivors include two daughters, Pam Warfield of Wheeling and
Mary Hudson of Delaware, Ohio; a son, Bill Buffington of Point
Pleasant; a sister, Sis Sturgeon of Point Pleasant; and five grandchildren.
Memorial service will be conducted by Rev. Steven Dorsey and Rev.
Tally Hanna at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Saturday,
November 4, at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends one hour
before the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the
scholarship fund at the Trinity United Methodist Church or the
Point Pleasant High School Athletic Department. Funeral arrangements

Burdett, Thomas Stuart
Thomas Stuart Burdett, 73, of Tierra Verde, Fla., died Wednesday,
Aug. 2, 1995, at All Children's Hospital..
Born in Point Pleasant, he was a son of the late T. Stuart and
Inez Burdett.
He moved to St. Petersburg, Fla. in 1974 from Middletown, R.I.
A graduate of the University of Kentucky, he was retired as an
electronic engineer from E-Systems, St. Petersburg, after 12 years
and was an Army veteran in World War II. He was a member of the
National Society of Professional Engineers, American Institute
of Industrial Engineers, American Institute of Manufacturing Engineers,
and the Universalist Unitarian Church. He served on the board
of directors of Tierra Verde Community Association.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret (Thomas) Burdett; daughter, Pamela
Burdett, St. Petersburg; sister, Sara Burdett Edis, Palm Beach
Gardens; a grandson and several cousins in the area.

Burdette, Virginia
Virginia 'Jean' (Rice) Burdette, 75, of Point Pleasant, died Wednesday,
Feb. 8, 1995, at the Pleasant Valley Hospital.
A graduate of Williamson High School, she attended business school
and came to Mason County during World War II as a secretary for
the local draft board. She was secretary in the office of supervisor
of the local U.S.P. and F.O. National Guard and was the first
female to be elected assessor of Mason County. She retired, with
disability, from Stauffer Chemical.
A member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church in Point Pleasant,
she was a member of the Scleraderma Foundation, and a former member
of the WV Gamma Chapter of the Lambda Chi Omega Sorority.
Born Nov. 4, 1919, in Williamson, she was a daughter of the late
Charles Lacy and Maude (Deskins) Rice. She was also preceded in
death by a brother, Daniel Edward Rice, and nephew, Danny Rice.
Surviving are her husband, James Woodell 'Woodie' Burdette; son
and daughter-in-law, Greg and Pat Burdette of Point Pleasant;
two sisters-in-law, Verlie Rice Collier of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.,
Sue Rice of Williamson; and one grandson.

Jake M. Burns, 80, of Point Pleasant, formerly of Columbus, Ohio,
died Monday, March 27, 1995 at Care Haven Nursing Home.
Born June 4, 1914 in Hogsett, WV, he was a son of the late Isiaah
and Cora (Harbour) Burns. He was a laborer and attended Clifton
Tabernacle.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Jesse (Cundiff) Burns;
a stepdaughter, Freda DeWeese; five brothers, Luther, Charlie,
Dewey, Virgil and Bill Burns; two sisters, Ruby DeWitt and Effie
Jones; and a granddaughter, Carmen Compson.
Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Ben and Darlene
Burns of Columbus, Ohio, Stanford and Dorothy Burns of Columbus,
Ohio and Mike and Bell Burns of West Columbia; two daughters and

Mrs. Flora Edith (Carpenter) Bush, 85, of Fraziers Bottom, died
Saturday, April 1, 1995, at her home.
Born March 17, 1910, in Cabell County, she was a daughter of the
late Ira and Flora Ellen (Oliver) Carpenter. She was also preceded
in death by her husband, Leonard E. Bush, April 7, 1991; and four
brothers, Oscar, Bura, Arthur and Clyde Carpenter.
She was a member of the Mt. Olive United Methodist Church of Milton.

Bush, Paul Leonard Sr
Paul Leonard Bush, Sr., 69, of Point Pleasant, died Monday, June
5, 1995, at his home following a long illness.
Born May 4, 1926, in Ambrosia, he was a son of the late Mason
and Eva Helen (Stearns) Bush. He was also preceded in death by
his wife, Reatha Bush, who died in 1993; son, Mark A. Bush; two
brothers, Arnold and Cecil; and a granddaughter.
He was a member of the Stewart-Johnson VFW Post 9926 of Mason
and American Legion 23 of Point Pleasant. A retired master river
pilot with 32 years of service, he served in World War II as a
member of the U.S. Marines.
Surviving are five daughters, Mary Berkeley of Henderson, Karen
Young of Ada, Oklahoma, Nancy Gardner of Point Pleasant, Susie
Halstead of Point Pleasant, Kathy Berkeley of Biloxi, Miss.; three

Jule Hunter 'Skip' Campbell, 66, of Point Pleasant died Wednesday,

Born June 7, 1929 in Sandyville, WV, he was a son of the late
John W. and Jean (Hunter) Campbell. He was a 1947 graduate of
Ripley High School, a four-year U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean
War, a volunteer for the Point Pleasant Senior Citizens Center,
and was retired with 29 years service from Kaiser Aluminum and
Chemical Corporation.
He was also preceded in death by three brothers.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy 'Dottie' (Thomas) Campbell
of Point Pleasant; three daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy and
Mike Beane of Vienna, WV, Angela and Tom Lincicone of Pinellas

Cecile C. (Musgrave) Carder, 90, of New Matamoras, Ohio, died
Saturday, Jan. 21, 1995, in Heartland of Marietta, Ohio
Born Sept. 27, 1904, in Point Pleasant, she was a daughter of
the late George Curtis and Clara Belle (Stewart) Musgrave. She
was also preceded in death by her husband, Herman H. Carder in
1976; brother, Robert Musgrave; sister, Mary C. Love; and grandson,
Larry Baker.
She was a graduate of Point Pleasant High School and received
her bachelor's degree in social studies education at Glenville
State College. She took post graduate studies at Ohio University,
Marshall University, the University of Charleston and Marietta
College. She retired in 1963 after 23 years of teaching for the
Washington County Board of Education. She had taught in the New
Matamoras public schools and had also been employed earlier by
the Mason County Board of Education as the teacher in a one-room
school near Point Pleasant.
A member of the Christ United Methodist Church, the United Methodist
Women and the Washington County Retired Teachers Association,
she was also a member of the Col. Charles Lewis Chapter of the
Daughters of the American Revolution and a life member of the
Ohio Retired Teachers Association.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Phyllis and Lawrence
Baker of Marietta, Ohio, Rita and Byron Walters of New Matamoras;
five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral Home, 314 Fourth Street, Marietta, with Arthur Edwards

Dennis L. Carder of Point Pleasant died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 1995,
at his home.
Born in Gallipolis, he was a son of Clifford Carder and Ruby M.
(McCulloch) Carder, Point Pleasant. Also surviving is a brother,
Dwight 'King' Carder of Point Pleasant, and a niece.
A former assistant executive director of Pleasant Valley Hospital
until his illness, he received a bachelor's degree in medical
technology from Marshall University in 1975 and master's degree
in hospital administration from Xavier University, Cincinnati,
Ohio. Prior to working at Pleasant Valley Hospital, he was associated
with Central Baptist Hospital of Lexington, Ky., as a medical
technologist.
A member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, he was a former member
of the Kiwanis Club, member of the board of directors of the Western
West Virginia Chapter American Red Cross; and supporter and volunteer
with Make-A-Wish Foundation.
The funeral will be Friday, 11 a.m., at the Wilcoxen Funeral Home
with the Rev. George Hoschar officiating. Burial will be in the

Thelma (Pritt) Casto, 75, of South Charleston, formerly of Leon,
died Monday, Jan. 2, 1995, at her home.
She was a homemaker and member of the St. Paul United Methodist
Church in South Charleston.
Born April 17, 1919, she was a daughter of the late Ethel (Hill)
and Everett Pritt. She was also preceded in death by her husband,
Chester Casto.
Survivors include a son, James M. Casto of Wilmington, N.C.; and
two grandchildren.
The funeral will be Wednesday, Jan. 4, 11 a.m., at the Snodgrass

Ada Jean Caufman, 86, of Gallipolis, Ohio died Thursday, May 4,

Born August 16, 1908 in Fairview, WV, she was a daughter of the
late Noah W. and Ada D. (Edwards) Roach.
She was a retired nurse for Holzer Medical Center, a member of
First Baptist Church of Gallipolis, a graduate of Holzer School
of Nursing and a graduate of Wahama High School.
She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Ottie, Dale
and Elmer Roach.
Survivors include two sons and daughter-in-law, Richard L. Caufman

Martin Jule Chapman, 79, Pomeroy, Ohio, died Sunday, Oct. 1, 1995

Born Feb. 18, 1916 in Ross Moore, son of the late Etna and Cora
Taylor Chapman, he was a retired coal miner, a World War II veteran,
member of Feeney-Bennett Post 128 of the American Legion in Middleport,
Ohio, the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Mason, the Wilkesville Orphans
Friends Masonic Lodge 27 , York Rites of Middleport and the Meigs
County Senior Citizens.
He is survived by his wife, Johnetta Bates Chapman; six sons and
three daughters-in-law, Leroy and Alice Chapman of Philadelphia,

Timmy Joe Chapman, 20, of Ravenswood, died Wednesday, August 23,
l995, at Camden-Clark Hospital in Parkersburg.
Born July 12, 1975 in Point Pleasant, he was a son of Alfice and
Dorothy (Smith) Chapman of Ravenswood. He was a member of the
Ravenswood Junior Fire Department.
He is also survived by two brothers, Tony Chapman and Henry Chapman,
both of Ravenswood.
Service will be Saturday, August 26, at 10 a.m. at the Wilcoxen
Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Langdon officiating. Burial will

Stella E. Chattin, 92, of Mason died Thursday, October 5, 1995,
at Pleasant Valley Hospital.
Born June 20,1903 in Mason, she was a daughter of the late Elmer
and Alice (Duncan) Batterson. She was a homemaker, a member of
the Mason United Methodist Church and taught the Sunshine Class
for several years.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, John A. Chattin.

1995, in the Presbyterian Manor Nursing Home.
Born July 20, 1904, in Huntington, she was a daughter of the late
Hannibal and Bertie (Johnson) Lowry. She was also preceded in
death by her husband, J. Paul Childers; grandson, John W. Childers;
and sister, Mrs. Dana D. (Ramah) Shank.
While a Mason County resident, she attended Trinity United Methodist
Church of Point Pleasant.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Gordon Emerson
of Ft. Myers, Fla.; son and daughter-in-law, J.P. and Mary Childers
of Huntington; six grandchildren, three step grandchildren and
16 great-grandchildren.

Laura Firn 'Aunt Mutt' Circle, 79, Racine, Ohio, died Saturday,
Feb. 25, 1995 at her residence.
Barn May 29, 1915 at Dorcas, Ohio, daughter of the late Marion
and Nellie Jackson Johnson, she was a retired cook. for the Southern
Local School District, having worked 29 years for the district.
She was a member of the Bethany United Methodist Church, the Eastern
Star, OAPSE, the Senior Citizens, AARP, SERO, Daughters of America-Guiding
Star Council and the Grange.
Surviving are a twin sister, Lizzie Wood of Racine; sisters-in-law,
Edison Johnson of Racine, Pauline Johnson of Carrollton, Texas,
and Clara Pierce of Athens, Ohio; a brother and sister-in-law,
James and Phyllis Circle of New Haven; and several nieces and
nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wesley Circle; four
brothers, Roy Johnson, Douglas Johnson, Waid Johnson and Howard
Johnson; her foster parents, Arthur and Mary Jane Beegle; and
nephews Paul Bostick and Howard Johnson Jr.

Rev. Woodrow W. Clagg, 71, of Glenwood, died Friday, June 16,
1995, at St. Mary's Hospital, Huntington.
Born in Milton on May 18, 1924, he was a son of the late William
Henry and Pearl Edmonds Clagg.
He was retired from Huntington Alloys with 21 years of service.
A former pastor of Lawrence Chapel Church and Bedford Chapel Church,
he was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his wife, Hilda Scarberry Clagg; two daughters,
Deanna Dingess of Willow Wood, Ohio, Linda Mullins of Huntington;
two sons, Michael Clagg of Huntington, Woodrow W. Clagg, Jr. of
Ona; sister, Mrs. Geneva Reynolds of Milton; 11 grandchildren

Brethren Independent Church, Milton, of which he was a member.

Capt. Charles L. Clark, Jr., 73, of Point Pleasant died Monday,
January 16, 1995, at Pleasant Valley Hospital.
He was retired from Ohio Barge Line and was a Master Pilot for
various riverboat companies; and a member of the Sand Hill Church
of Christ. Born August 5, 1921 in Belle, WV, he was a son of the
late Charles L. Sr. and Frances E. (Robbins) Clark.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Pearson) Clark; two sons
and daughters-in-law, Roger and Twila Clark and Jeffery O. and
Belinda Clark, all of Point Pleasant; four daughters and sons-in-law,

Ada Allen Clarke, 93, Route 2, Box 351, Letart, died Friday, July
21, 1995 at the Holzer Medical Center.
Born October 20, 1901 at her lifetime residence in Graham Station,
she was a daughter of the late Lonnie and Helen (Clarke) Allen.
Ada was born again in the Christian faith in 1925 at the New Haven
U.B. Church. She was a devout Christian and member of the Graham
United Methodist Church and a retired Mason County school teacher.
Ada was also preceded in death by her husband, Harry W. Clarke;
and sister, Clara Allen.
Ada is survived by her twin sister, Anna Allen; step-children
and cousins.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 24, 1995 at the
Graham United Methodist (Block) Church, Route 33, Letart, WV,
with Reverends Harry Clarke, Jr., Shearl Clarke, Rex Young and

Sofia Ann Clifton, 73, of Rt. 1, Point Pleasant, WV, died Saturday
evening, January 14, 1995, at Pleasant Valley Hospital. She was
a member of the Pocahontas Homemakers Club.
Born September 12, 1921, in Masontown, Pennsylvania, she was a
daughter of the late Andrew and
Agnes (Golden) Seginack. In addition to her parents, she was also
preceded in death by her husband, Vernon M. Clifton, Sr., who
died June 2, 1988.

Born November 21, 1935 in Cabell County, she was a daughter of

Mission in Glenwood. She was also preceded in death by two brothers,
Clifton Roten and Teddy Roten.

and a former member of the First Baptist Church of Middleport.

Raymond Leo Coleman, 70, of Plain City, Ohio, died Wednesday,
March, 8, 1995.
Born Aug. 11, 1924, in Letart, he was a son of the late Harry
H. and Hilda J. (Hart) Coleman. He was also preceded in death
by two sisters and three brothers.
He was retired from the Lennox Furnace Co., Columbus, Ohio, with
38 years of service. He served with the Engineer Corps during
World War II in the invasion of France, as well as other war conflicts,
and was a member and trustee of the Methodist Church, Jerome.
Surviving are his wife, Betty (King) Coleman; three sons and two
daughters-in-law, Roger and Linda Coleman, Bruce and Dorothy Coleman,
Plain City, Ohio, Gary Coleman of Charlotte, N.C.; a daughter

member of Simpson Creek Baptist Church, a registered stock broker
and was employed by Baker Watts Company.
She was also preceded in death by a brother.

a U.S. Air Force veteran serving during the Korean Conflict, and
a lay speaker for the United Methodist Conference. A graduate
of Point Pleasant High School, he was a member of Local 5668 Steelworkers,
member of the Steelworkers Organization of Active Retirees, and
a member of the Mason-Jackson Labor Council.
Born Dec. 25, 1932, in Mason County, he was a son of the late
Edward A. Cromley, Jr. and the late Macy Vivian (Cooper) Cromley.

Dr. Zinnia Brawner Dayo, 63, formerly of New Haven, died Friday,
Oct. 6, 1995, at George Washington University Hospital, Washington,
D.C.
Born August 17, 1932, in the Philippines, she was a daughter of
the late Felix and Juana Brawner. She was also preceded in death
by her husband, Dr. Mateo Dayo.
Surviving are six children, Pag-asa Dayo of Washington, D.C.,
Almabel Dayo of Ashburn, Va., Anafe Dayo of Forest Hills, N.Y,
Dr. Mateo Dayo, III, M.D., Wilmington, N.C., Rodney Dayo of Lewisburg,
and Jet Dayo of Morgantown; five sisters, Lenore Potencion, Marjorie
Rubio, Dr. Jose Flores all of the United States, Attorney Felisa
Bauilat and Dr. Jane Caluag, both of the Philippines; five brothers,
Brig. Gen. Felix Brawner, Jr., Justice Romeo Brawner, Col. Percy
Brawner, all of the Philippines, Dr. Johnny Brawner and Ret. Col.
Libbie Brawner, both of the United States.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, 11 a.m., at the St.
Joseph Catholic Church, Mason, with Father Melvin Averman officiating.
Burial will be in the Sunrise Memorial Gardens. Friends are invited
to a gathering afterwards at the St. Joseph Church Parish Hall.

Dennis, Dale G
Dale G. 'Pete' Dennis, 63, of Cleveland, Ohio died Thursday, September
7, 1995, at University Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio.
Born October 11, 1931, he was a son of the late Forrest L. Dennis
and Helene J. Dennis. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force,
having served in the Korean Conflict; and was a 1951 graduate
of Point Pleasant High School.
He is survived by four children, Tammy, Kelli and Mike of Spokane,
Washington and David of Great Falls, Montana; four sisters, Marion
Samuels, Pat Gossilen, Rita Paden and Camille Vetrano; five brothers,
Bruce Dennis, Terrance Dennis, Wallace 'Bud' Dennis, Ronald Dennis
and Donald Dennis; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Sunday, September 10, at Ferfolia Funeral Home,
Sagamore Hills, Ohio.
Derenge, Lawrence F
Lawrence F. Derenge of Apple Grove died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 1995,
in the Morris Memorial Convalescent Home in Milton.
A member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Point Pleasant,
he was owner of the Hidden Acres at Apple Grove, a supervisor
at Meigs Mines, an associate of Alum Creek Coal Co., and taught
mining at the University of Rio Grande. A WVU graduate with a
degree in mining engineering, he was the owner of Gallia Coal
Company in West Columbia.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Michael and Madalyn
(Our) Derenge; 11 brothers and a sister; and his first wife, Edwina
(Pering) Derenge.
Survivors include his wife, Marvella (Smith) Derenge; daughter,
Penny Stauffer of Lexington, Ky.; son, Larry Derenge, Jr. of Lexington;
eight grandchildren, a niece and several nephews.
The funeral will be Thursday, 11 a.m., at the Sacred Heart Catholic
Church with Father Melvin Averman officiating. Burial will be

Dickens, Alonzo Joseph Jr
Alonzo Joseph 'Buster' Dickens, Jr., 75, of Point Pleasant, WV
passed away Friday, May 19, 1995, at the Pleasant Valley Hospital.
Born February 1, 1920 in Kaylong, WV, he was a son of the late
Alonzo Noah Dickens and Virginia Susan (Fry) Dickens.
A retired U.S. Postal Service employee with 23 years service,
he was a member of the Bellemead United Methodist Church in Point
Pleasant, WV, life-time member of the V.F.W., and D.A.V., member
of the American Legion Post 23, Point Pleasant, WV, graduate of
Wahama High School Class 1940, superintendent or assistant superintendent
of Sunday School at Bellemead since 1962 and a World War II veteran
serving with the U.S. Army.
Dickens enlisted in the United States Army in October 1941 and
served in the Medical Detachment of the 162nd Infantry where he
served under battlefield conditions for three years, seven months
and 28 days. When he was honorably discharged in June 1945, he
was Chief Battlefield Medic. While in the Army he received the
following medals: two Silver Star Medals, two Bronze Star Medals,
three Purple Heart Medals, Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Medals,
American Defense Service Medals, Philippine Liberation Ribbon
and Medical Combat Badge.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife
whom he married August 19, 1945, Betty Jane (Hardman) Dickens
on May 22, 1985; and one sister, Mary Elizabeth 'Tib' Cooke.
Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law, Susan Bowser of
Point Pleasant, WV, and Mrs. Terry (Penny) Shirley of Point Pleasant,
WV; one son and daughter-in-law, Joseph (Janet) Dickens of Gallipolis,
Ohio; two sisters, Margaret Kincaid of Point Pleasant, WV and
Sarah McCoy of Barberton; Ohio; five grandchildren, Lisa Bowser
Arbogast, Jennifer Shirley, Rebecca Shirley, Jessica Dickens and
Jason Campbell; and two great-granddaughters, Cinthia Lea Arbogast
and Katlyn Michelle Peric.
Funeral service will be held Monday, May 22, 1995, at 2 p.m. at
the Bellemead United Methodist Church with the Rev. Carroll McCauley
officiating. Burial will be in the Kirkland Memorial Gardens in
Point Pleasant, WV. Military grave side rites will be conducted
by V.F.W. Post 9926, Mason, WV. Visitation will be Sunday, May

Donohue, John Claude
John Claude Donohue, 67, of Point Pleasant, died at home Thursday,
January 5, 1995.
He was a retired 31 year employee of the Utility Department at
American Alloys: a veteran of the US Army during the Korean Conflict,
from 1951-1954.
Born December 12, 1927, in Ambrosia, W.Va., he was a son of the
late Jesse M. and Emma L. (Wilson) Donohue. He was also preceded
in death by two sisters, Opal V. Escue and Garnette E. Donohue;
and two infant brothers.
He is survived by two daughters, Theresa Moore of Mt. Washington,
Kentucky, and Margaret Waters of Valdosta, Georgia; two sons,
Johnie C. Donahue and Garry L. Donahue both of Point Pleasant;
two sisters and one brother-in-law, Gretchen E. and Curt Connolly
and Adda E. Baker, all of Point Pleasant; two brothers and sisters-in-law,
Walter 'Bill' and Kathryn Donohue of Fort Meade, Florida and Jesse
J. and Anna Mae Donahue of Point Pleasant; seven grandchildren
and two great-grandchildren.

Aretta (Lyons) Dowell, 76, of Southside, died Sunday, Jan. 1,
1995, at St. Mary's Hospital, Huntington, following a long illness.
Born Oct. 16, 1918, she was a daughter of the late J.F. and Myrtle
Spicer. Also preceding her in death were a brother, Raymond Lyons,
and two-sisters, Linnie Lee Spicer and Beaulah Featherolf.
Surviving are her husband, Ernest Dowell of Southside; two sons
and daughters-in-law, James C. and Wendy Dowell of Grove City,
Ohio, Charles 'Chuck' and Mary Dowell of Gallipolis Ferry; three

Ohio, Shirley and Darrell Stamper of Columbus, Ohio, Donna and

Dale E. Duncan, Jr., 63, of Davis Creek, Charleston, died Wednesday,
March 1, 1995, at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston.
Born Feb. 8, 1932, in Point Pleasant, he was a son of the late
Dale Albert and Delphia M. (Veers) Duncan.
He was formerly head clerk for Penny Fare Supermarket in Spring
Hill and attended God's Tabernacle, also in Spring Hill.
Surviving are his wife, Gloria (Chafin) Duncan; four daughters,
Denise Freeman of South Charleston, Jessica Dawn Duncan, at home,
Mary Elizabeth Sullivan of Charleston, Paula Carte of Dunbar;
two sons, James Duncan of Charleston, Greg Duncan of South Charleston;

Anna Laura McDermitt Dunlap died Saturday, Sept. 2, 1995, at the
Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Sarasota, Fla.
Born March 25, 1914 in Point Pleasant, she was a daughter of the
late John and Stella Casey McDermitt. She was also preceded in
death by her husband, Edward Dunlap, sister, Virginia Henry, and
two half brothers, Scott and Pete McDermitt.
Surviving are a stepson, William Dunlap; niece, two half nieces,
and four great nieces and nephews.
The funeral was held Friday, Sept. 9 in Sarasota.

Garold Dunn, 66, of Williamsport, Ohio, formerly of Cabell County,
passed away Monday, October 30, 1995, in Berger Hospital, Circleville,
Ohio.
Born March 6, 1934 in Cabell County, he was a son of the late
James F. and Dorothy Gladys (Smith) Dunn. He was an employee of
Jefferson Smurfitt Corp. of America.
He was also preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.

Linda Dunn of Williamsport, Ohio; a son, Garold LeRoy Dunn of

Barto L. Durst, Sr., 88, of Point Pleasant, died Monday, Jan.
16, 1995, at Holzer Medical Center.
He was a retired boilermaker of Local 667-Winfield, a former employee
of the Marietta Manufacturing Company in Point Pleasant and of
the John Amos Power Plant in Winfield. A lifelong resident of
Mason County, he attended the Wesleyan Church.
Born Jan. 25, 1906, in Mason County, he was a son of the late
Henry Harrison and Hannah Elizabeth (Stone) Durst. He was also
preceded in death by his wife, Ruth (Love) Durst; son, Barto L.
Durst, Jr.; nine brothers, four sisters and one step-granddaughter.
Surviving are a daughter, Patricia Ann Lee of Point Pleasant;
son, Jackie L. Durst of Syracuse, Ohio; seven grandchildren; 10
great-grandchildren, and one step-grandchild.

William 'Bill' Durst, 67, of Mt. Alto and Oakfield, Ohio died
Saturday, March 25, 1995, at the Good Samaritan Hospital, Zanesville,

He was a retired coal miner for Sunny Hill Coal Company in Ohio
and had worked at other local coal companies in this area. He
had also worked on construction in the Mt. Alto area.
Born April 21, 1927, in Leon, he was a son of the late Herschel
W. and Ruth (Barnett) Durst. He was also preceded in death by
two brothers, Clyde and Herby Durst, and a sister, Ruth Mitchell.
He is survived by his wife, Janie Mary (Keefer) Durst; three daughters,
Janice Peyton of Shawnee, Ohio, Rita Hosom of New Lexington, Ohio,
Angela Gable of Zanesville, Ohio; two sons, Earl Durst of Shawnee,

Russell Eads, 81, of Waynesville, Ohio, formerly of Point Pleasant,
died Wednesday, August 16, 1995, at his home following a short
illness.
Born July 17, 1914, in Point Pleasant, he was a son of the late
Herbert S. and Bertha F. (Greenlee) Eads. He was also preceded
in death by two brothers, Walter and Clarence; a sister, Louise;
and a great-grandchild.
Survivors include his wife, Maxine Eads of Waynesville, Ohio;
a son and daughter-in-law, Charles R. and Margie Eads of Dayton,
Ohio; a sister-in-law, Cora Eads of Point Pleasant; three grandchildren;

Edith Earles, 73, died Thursday, March 23, 1995, at Holzer Medical
Center in Gallipolis, Ohio.
Born August 16, 1921 in Cabell County, she was a daughter of the
late Otho and Lessie (Baker) Bailey. She was a member of Friendly
United Baptist.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, Benford Bailey.
Survivors include a daughter, Darlene Townsend of Huntington;
two sons, Roger Bailey of Huntington and Mike Gibson of Wayne;
five sisters, Evelyn Clonch of Point Pleasant, Gladys Gibson and

Golda Eastman, 77, of 36995 Wickham Road, Pomeroy, died Thursday,
Oct. 5,1995 at the Holzer Medical Center.
Born on, July 10, 1918 in Mason County, W. Va., she was the daughter
of the late William and Lydia Hively Siders. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, Orville M. Eastman; one nephew,
Marvin Hufford, Gallipolis; and a sister-in-law, Betty Eastman,
Pomeroy.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters,
Lucille Siders, Ploma Nelson, and Vesta Hufford; and a brother,
Charles Siders.

John E. Edwards, 73, of Crystal River, FL died Sunday, September
10, 1995 at his residence.
He was born in Point Pleasant and came to Crystal River from Clearwater,
FL 27 years ago. He was a Methodist, a Mason and member of the
Morocco Shrine Temple of Jacksonville, FL, Pipefitters Local 111
of Tampa, FL and a World War II U.S. Army Air Corps veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Vera, of Crystal River; three sons,
Wayne of Albuquerque, NM, Leslie and Gary, both of Plano, TX;
a daughter, Ann Redgrave of Americus, GA; four brothers, William
of El Reno, OK, Virgil of Illinois, Jackson Y. of Point Pleasant,
and Arthur of Orlando, FL; a sister, Elsie McKinney of Lorraine,
Ohio; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Floyd K. Ekers, 66, of Ashton, WV passed away Tuesday, July 11,
1995 in Pleasant Valley Hospital, Point Pleasant, WV of a heart
attack.

Floyd was born Nov. 15, 1928 in Cabell Co. He is a son of Nettie
Beaver Ekers of Tallahassee, FL and the late Rev. John K. Ekers.
Floyd was a member of Balls Chapel Church, Ashton and a retired
driver for R&L Transfer, Gallipolis Ferry. He was a veteran
of the Korean Conflict serving with the U.S. Army.

1995, at Holzer Medical Center following an extended illness.
Born January 11, 1922 in Hartford, he was a son of the late Charles

He was a retired school teacher having taught in the Shade, Wahama
and Eastern school districts; a U.S. Army veteran of World War
II; a 1940 graduate of Wahama High School and a 1949 graduate
of Ohio University with a BA and MA in education.
Survivors include his wife, Pauline (Dill) Fields; two daughters,
Mary Ann Fields of Middleport and Patricia Fields of Gallipolis;

Evan L. Forbis, 82, of Rt. 3, Leon, died Thursday, Jan. 12, 1995,
at Pleasant Valley Hospital.
He was a retired heavy equipment operator for the City of Columbus,
Ohio, and an Army veteran of World War II.
Born Nov. 30, 1912 in Arbuckle, Mason County, he was a son of
the late Joseph and Rhoda (Scantlin) Forbis. He was also preceded
in death by a son, Evan Forbis, Jr.
Surviving are two daughters, Judy Bowles of Grove City Ohio, Brenda
Coleman of Columbus, Ohio; son, Michael Forbis of Florida; five

Forbis, Opal M
Opal M. (Bailes) Forbis, 76, of Buffalo, died Monday, Jan. 23,1995
in the Pleasant Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
She was a housewife.
Born May 23, 1918, in Mason County, she was a daughter of the
late George and Mae (Clark) Bailes. She was also preceded in
death by her husband, Dorsel 'Doc' Forbis, who died in 1981.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Walter and Karen
Forbis, Buffalo; sister, Audrey Bowler of Robertsburg; two brothers,
Cecil Bailes of Leon, Romie Bailes of Point Pleasant; and two
grandchildren.
The funeral will be Thursday, 11 a.m., at the Raynes Funeral Home
in Buffalo with the Rev. Denver Tucker officiating. Burial will
be in the Walker Chapel Cemetery, Robertsburg. Friends may call
at the funeral home Wednesday, 4 to 9 p.m.
Forshee, Maysil A
Maysil A. Forshee, 89, of Point Pleasant, died Tuesday, Oct. 31,
1995, at the Pleasant Valley Nursing and
Rehabilitation Center.
Born Oct. 16, 1906, in Handley, W.Va., she was a daughter of the
late Albert Lee Barringer and Myrtle Ann (Nelson) Barringer. She
was also preceded in death by her husband, David Frank Forshee,
four sisters, five brother, a grandson and a great-granddaughter.
She was a homemaker.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. John (Doris) Miller of Point Pleasant;
three sons, David and Donald Forshee, both of Point Pleasant,
Frank Melvin Forshee of Gallipolis Ferry; brother, Ray Barringer
of Point Pleasant; sister, Corrine Eads of Marysville, Ohio; nine
grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
The funeral will be Saturday, 1 p.m., at the Wilcoxen Funeral
Home with Minister Johnny Hayman officiating. Burial will be in
the Suncrest Cemetery, Point Pleasant. Friends may call at the
funeral home Friday, 7 to 9 p.m.
Foster, Susan Kay
Susan Kay (Stanley) Foster, 42, of Point Pleasant, died at her
home Sunday, Oct. 22, 1995.
Born June 26, 1953, in Gallipolis, she was the daughter of William
'Bill' Stanley of Southside and the late Frances E. (Hook) Stanley.
She was employed as a bookkeeper for Carson Farm Trucking and
was a 1971 graduate of Point Pleasant High School.
In addition to her father, she is survived by a sister, Nancy
Pickens of Burlington, N.C.; three brothers, Mike Stanley of Southside,
Eddie Stanley of Bethel, Ohio, Steve Stanley of Maysel, W.Va.;
grandmother, Bess Stanley of Southside; and several nieces and
nephews.
The funeral will be Thursday, 1 p.m., at the Crow-Hussell Funeral
Home with the Rev. Louis A. Hussell officiating. Burial will be
in Concord Cemetery, Henderson. Friends may call at the funeral
home Wednesday, 6 to 9 p.m.
Fowler, Mildred K
Mildred K. Fowler, 62, of Letart died Saturday, November 11, 1995,
at Pleasant Valley Hospital.
Born July 29, 1933 in Point Pleasant, she was a daughter of the
late Harry L. and Freda (Gardner) Bass. She was a homemaker and
attended Salem Community Church.
She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Patsy Bass and
Senna Hussell; three brothers, David, Billy and Bobby Bass; and
a grandson, Rusty Swisher.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Roger
Swisher of Point Pleasant, Darlene and David Sisk of New Haven,
and Crystal Fowler of Letart; three sons and daughters-in-law,
Jeff and Ruby Fowler of Middleport, Donnie and Carol Fowler of
Mason and Ricky and Minnie Fowler of Letart; 13 grandchildren;
one great-grandchild; four brothers, Edward Bass of West Columbia,
Harry Bass, Ronnie Bass and Charles Bass, all of Point Pleasant;
and two sisters, Nancy Jackson of Point Pleasant and Barbara Cornell
of Letart.
Service will be Tuesday, November 14, at 1 p.m. at Foglesong Funeral
Home, Mason, with Rev. George Hoschar and Rev. Clyde Ferrell officiating.
Burial will follow in the Graham Cemetery, New Haven. Friends
may call at the funeral home Monday from 5-9 p.m.
Fox, Pearl Marie
Pearl Marie (Stewart) Fox, 90, of Care Haven Nursing Home, Point
Pleasant, formerly of Crystal River, Fla., died Friday, Jan. 13,
1995, at Pleasant Valley Hospital.
Born Oct. 1904, in Mason County, she was a daughter of the late
John Andrew and Mary (Edwards) Stewart. She was also preceded
in death by her husband, Billie O. Fox in 1980, daughter, Norma
Pillsbury, a sister and two brothers.
She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary for over 40 years.
Surviving are a son-in-law and wife, Arky and Phyllis Pillsbury,
Crystal River; three sisters, Ora Higgins of Point Pleasant, Catherine
Russell of New Haven, Geraldine Greer of New Haven; granddaughter,
Sharon Radebaugh of Keller, TX.; three great-granddaughters and
several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Monday, 11 a.m., at the Wilcoxen Funeral Home
with the Rev. Bennie Stevens officiating. Burial will be in Kirkland
Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday,
6 to 9 p.m.
Froendt, John E Jr
John E. Froendt, Jr., 36, of West Columbia, died Friday, Oct.
13, 1995, in Jackson General Hospital.
Born June 15, 1959, in Fort Belvoir, Va., he was a son of Mary
E. (Zuspan) Froendt, West Columbia, and the late Sgt. First Class
John E. Froendt.
A member of the Peniel United Methodist Church, he was a 1977
gradate of Wahama High School, attended Fairmont State College,
and graduated from Marshall University, where he was a four-year
varsity cheerleader. While attending Marshall, he was a member
of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. A life member of the 4H All
Stars, he actively worked with local, state and national Cheerleading
groups, coached and judged gymnastics on a state and national
level, and was a certified instructor and judge for the National
Cheerleading Association.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are three sisters and two
brothers-in-law, Carla D. Wallace of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Karen
L. and Les R. Facemyer of Ripley, Sharon A. and Randy N. Gough
of Nokesville, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral
will be Monday, 1 p.m., at the Foglesong Funeral Home with the
Rev. Nancy Mayes and Rev. Mike Lambert officiating. Burial will
be in the Zuspan Cemetery, West Columbia. Friends may call at
the funeral home Sunday, 7 to 9 p.m.
