Woman Dies Outside Nursing Home
Pleasant Valley Hospital officials today declined to comment on
the death Sunday night of an 84-year old woman who had walked
out of the Pleasant Valley Nursing Care Unit and into sub-zero
weather.
Gary Park of PVH did say, however, that an article which appeared
in Wednesday's Huntington Herald-Dispatch was "essentially
accurate." Park further explained that the hospital's refusal
to comment was in deference to the family of Myrtle Webb, formerly
of Huntington, whose body was found about 20 minutes after she
walked out of the front door of the nursing home.
The Huntington paper reported that family members, as well as
Dr Richard Slack, Mrs Webb's physician, also declined to comment.
A spokesperson for the Cabell County Sheriff's Department, which
is handling Mrs Webb's financial affairs, said this morning that
the sheriff's department was informed of the woman's death by
a daughter who said Mrs Webb has walked away from the nursing
care unit, where she lived, without a coat and had apparently
slipped and fell.
The spokesperson added that the sheriff's department had not been
in contact with the nursing home or PVH and said the department
was not investigating the incident.
Mason County Medical Examiner John Grubb said Mrs Webb's death
was "not a corner's case" and that he did not examine
the woman, but added that the cause of death had been established
as a heart attack. Dr Grubb further explained that heart attacks
in cold weather are often caused by a sudden gasp of very cold
air.
Mrs Webb's funeral was held at 1 pm today at Chapman's Mortuary
in Huntington with burial at Woodmere Memorial Park.
Former State Senator Dr Randall A Taylor of Point Pleasant told
the Register today that he is going to ask for a complete investigation
into Mrs Webb's death.
