James Crump Passes Away
Mr James Crump, one of Five-mile's oldest citizens, departed this life March 30th, 1908, the cause of his death being consumption. The funeral service was conducted in the Beech Hill M E Church, South, by Rev J S Pullin assisted by Rev Wilson, of Jackson county, after which his remains were laid to rest in the Beech Hill cemetery. Brother Crump leaves a wife and two children, two brothers and a sister to mourn the loss of a loved one.

Captain Fletcher C Lanham, veteran of the Civil War, died at his home at Clifton, Monday after along illness. He was a genial whole souled chivilerous gentlemen(sic), who made hosts of friends and knew how to keep them. He was in his 75th year. He was buried yesterday in the Clifton cemetery.

Capt. F C Lanham passed away at his home in Clifton this morning after a lingering illness of long duration. The captain was formerly a residents of the First Ward, and was one of the best knows(sic) of the older residents of the town. He was about 76 years old and leaves a number of relatives to mourn his loss.
The funeral will be held Wednesday conducted by Rev. Tho. Turnbull - Pomeroy Independent.

DIED OF PNEUMONIA
Mrs. Elizabeth Jane Maupin, Widow of Charles White Maupin, Died Sunday Morning
At her home at Arbuckle, Union District, this (Mason) county, on Sunday morning, January 26th, 1908, Mrs. Elizabeth Jane Maupin, widow of the late Charles White Maupin, died after several week's illness of pneumonia.
She was born in Shennandoah (sic) county, Virginia, February 8, 1829, her parents being Morgan and Mary (Allen) Moore, who emigrated to this county, to Mercers Bottom, when the daughter was a child. She was united in marriage at Gallipolis, on July 1, 1848, to Mr. C.W. Maupin and to this union twelve children were raised to maturity.
Mrs. Maupin's remains were brought here Wednesday morning on the K&MRR, and taken to the M E Church, Sough, where the services were conducted by Rev. John Martin, assisted by Rev. R P Bell, the interment took place in Lone Oak Cemetery, where she rests beside her husband.
Mrs. Maupin had a wide acquaintance in the county. She was much of the time in the store, her husband conducted for so many years. She was a famous "house mother" as the Germans so fitly put it, and who, that recalls the early years, of the Mason County Fairs but remember the boxes and baskets of good things to eat that carried off the blue ribbons, and were made by Mrs. Maupin as were the prize wines and quilts and articles of house hold manufacture. Here hands seemed never to have been idle. But her activity constituted her chief happiness and she has earned the folding of hands for her long rest.

Death has again visited our community and claimed for its victim an aged lady, Mrs. Sallie Moody, who departed this life on Saturday morning at 4 o'clock at her home on Three Mile. She leaves several grown children and hosts of friends to morn their loss.

Miss Sarah Pullin died Thursday night at her home at Debbie and her funeral was held Saturday morning by Rev J H Gibbons of the Episcopal Church. Interment in the Family Burying Grounds. Miss Pullin was the daughter of James People Pullin, who with his father Jonathan Pullin came to Mason County from Bath County Virginia, in 1810. James Peoples married Miss Poly Cooper daughter of Mr Leonard Cooper and made his home upon the Cooper farm at the mouth of eight mile creek on the Kanawha River. Upon this farm was erected the first block house between Point Pleasant and the mouth of the Coal River. The exact date of this block house is unknown, but it was prior to 1794. This old house was not only the home of the Pullin family, and a protection for them, and the frontiersmen who came later when Indian, depredations threatened, but for many years it was the "Wayside INN". The old block house was situated a quarter mile below the site of the old home where Miss Pullin was born and _____to keep Company with the modern house of her brother Mr George W Pullin, with whom Miss Sarah made her home since the death of her parents. She was 72 years of age and while she had never married and reared for herself, home ties, she devoted her life to her brother's family, and by her cheerful disposition and Industrious habits added materially to the happiness of that home and when the summons come that called he hence, pathway was smoothed with tenderest hands and her death in mourned by those who knew her vest and love her most. Miss Pullin loved the associations and traditions of her home. She knew the history of her locality, she prized and cherished many mementoes of the pioneer life and she has given them into the keeping of those who have been trained to love them and will preserve them.
NOTE: Sarah Pullin was born Oct. 8, 1834 - died March 12, 1908

The little infant daughter of Otie Roush and wife died Wednesday night. The funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon at their home by Rev. Board, interment in the Board cemetery. The pall-bearers were Misses Jennie, Maude and Lizzie Blessing and May Roush.
