William Louis ZIMMER (Jacob, Louis) was born in 1871/1872 in Wheeling, West Virginia. He died on 2 Oct 1907 in Wheeling, WV. He was buried Northwood Cem. !William Louis Zimmer worked as a mouldmaker for the Glass Co. in Zanesville, Ohio. He was going to a meeting for the Glass Co. along with two other gentleman, when the smoking car in which he was traveling was hit by a freight train. He was severely injured and died a few days later from these injuries, in the train accident in Bellaire, Belmont Co. OH. No S.S. record is found for him. His wife was awarded $6,500.00 for wrongful death charges against the railroad. !Obituary "The Zanesville Times Oct 3rd, 1907" Funeral of William Zimmer held Tuesday in Cambridge, OH Oct 2nd 1907, The remains of William Zimmer, of South Twelfth Street; who succumbed Tuesday morning in the Boone hospital at Bellaire, to his injuries received in the B & O, wreck at that place Saturday, arrived in the city at noon today. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. Internment will be made in the Northwood cemetery. !OBITUARY; "Wheeling Register Newspaper" Oct 6, 1907 page 6 William Zimmer, the last remaining victim of the wreck which occurred at Bellaire on last Saturday, was laid to rest at Cambridge, Ohio on Thursday afternoon. The deceased was widely known in Wheeling and Bellaire at which places he was reared. He was the oldest son of the late Jacob Zimmer, who was foreman at the La Belle and Belmont glass business in Bellaire some years ago and met his death in Bellaire also on June 23, 1888. William Zimmer who died from his injuries received in the wreck, was a grandson of the late Louis Zimmer who resided until his death in So. Wheeling on 33rd St., well known by all the old residents of So. Wheeling William married Ida May BRANNON daughter of Thomas BRANNON and Henrietta SHIMP on 20 Sep 1897 in Moundsville, Marshall Co, WV. Ida was born on 22 Apr 1880 in Moundsville, Marshall Co. WV. Charles Dewey ZIMMER (William Louis, Jacob, Louis) was born on 29 Apr 1898 in Moundsville, Marshall Co. WV. He died on 13 Nov 1972 in Garden Grove, Ca. He was buried on 16 Nov 1972 in Westminster Memorial Park, Westminster, CA. INFORMATION ON CHARLES DEWEY ZIMMER: Born in West Virginia on April 29, 1898. He married Malinda Jane Walker on Dec. 2, 1918. Early on in their life they lived in Cambridge, Ohio then moved to Wyandotte, Mich. There he worked in the Michigan Chemical train yard as an assistant engineer. He received this job to be legal to play on the company semi-pro baseball team. In about 1924 or 1925 they, with their two small sons, moved to So. Calif. They lived in several cities such as South Gate, Lynwood, Maywood and mostly Huntington Park. During the rest of his life he held the job of journeyman glass blower, working for the Technical Glass Co. 2050 E 48th St in Los Angeles and Brock Glass Co. in Santa Ana. In his younger days he played a great deal of semi-pro baseball on Sundays with sponsors such as Jello Corp and Richfield Oil Co. He excelled in many other sports. In bowling he had a constant 200 average, in golf he held a 10 handicap. Other sports he enjoyed were tennis, horseshoes, badmitton, hunting and fishing. All of which he did with great excellence. Needless to say, these skills were passed on to his two sons. Shortly before retiring he and his wife moved to Garden Grove where they lived until his death. Services were held at the Peek Family Colonial funeral home on Nov. 16,1972 at 3 p.m. Officiant was Rev. John P. MacLachlan from the First Presbyterian Church, in Garden Grove, CA. Malinda was born on 7 Jun 1898 in Roseville, Muskingum Co. OH. She died on 1 May 1990 in Garden Grove, CA. She was buried on 4 May 1990 in cremated. She died of cardiac failure & arrest Cardiorespiratory failure, Arteriosclerosis and Lobar pneumonia. She was living at 2629 Randolph St. Huntington Park, CA. when she made out her application for Social Security on Dec. 1, 1936. Her remains after her death are unknown, but a record of remembrance was placed on the headstone of Husband Charles Dewey Zimmer at the Westminster Gardens Cemetery in 1999. Charles and Malinda had the following children: 11 M i. William Edward ZIMMER was born on 18 Jan 1920 in Lancaster, Ohio. He died on 19 Oct 1992 in Garden Grove, CA. He was buried in 1992 in Riverside Natl Cemetery. SS# 562-28-0197 William Zimmer graduated from Montebello High School 1938/39. He attended Fullerton Junior College and took a flying class. He lived with a spinster school teacher named Gladys Guthrie, so he could go to these schools. He joined the USMC (Marines) and graduated from flight school at Corpus Christi, TX in 1942. He took additional training to become a flight instructor. Later he was transferred to Military transports, being stationed at Cherry Point, NC, El Toro Marine Base in Calif. and also over in the Hawaiian Islands. He did this job, his entire 20 years of service, reaching the rank of Major. When he retired, he worked as a gunsmith for awhile, then in the State unemployment office as a interviewer. He suffered his first heart attack around 1967 while hunting with his brother Chuck. Had to have by-pass surgery in 1973. Died from a heart attack, at the Garden Grove Hospital Medical Ctr. He was cremated and his remains buried in the Riverside Natl. Cemetery near March Air force Base. At the time of his death he was living at 11662 Frederick Dr. Garden Grove, CA 92640 William married Barbara Louise PARSONS on 23 Oct 1944 in Corpus Christi, Texas. Barbara was born on 8 May 1920 in Atlanta, Georgia. 12 M ii. Charles Donald ZIMMER was born on 2 Dec 1923 in Wyandotte, MI. He was christened on 10 Jun 1928 in California. Charles was 6 months old when his family moved West to California, from Michigan. His father got a job at the Technical Glass Co. Chuck attended Miles Ave Grammer School, Gage Junior High in Huntington Park. He attended Huntington Park High School for the 9th grade and part of 10th grade. They moved to Santa Ana Dec 2nd, 1939. He graduated from the Santa Ana High School class of 1942. He invited Betty Ferguson to his Prom and they went to the Paladiam then drove to the beach. He double dated with his best friend Chuck Williams who was killed in WWII. He worked at a grocery store as a box boy, then at Safe Way as a stock and box boy. He quit to work as a golf caddy for the Santa Ana Country Club. He attended Santa Ana Junior College. Then got a job with his father at the Brock Glass Co. in the shipping dept. then moved into the factory as a helper and earned 85 cents an hour. There was a shortage of man-power due to the war and draft. At 20yrs of age he was 5'11" weight 155 brown hair and brown eyes. Army ID 323741th Bomb Sq 502nd Bomb Gp. Grand Island Nebr. !Military History: He took a test for the Air Corp at Santa Ana Air Base and passed middle of 1942. Left Los Angeles Jan. 1943 for Lincoln, Nebr for his basic Army training. He was sent to Des Moines, Iowa for College detachment training at Drake University. While at the University he met Audrey Jeannette Born. She was working across the street from the College at the Ice Cream & Malt shop. They fell in love, during the four months that he was in Iowa. He was sent back to the Santa Ana Air Base for schooling to find out if he was going to be a Bombardier, Navigator or Pilot. He qualified to be a Pilot and was sent for Primary Training at Visalia, CA. It was here that he married his sweetheart Audrey. He was sent to Bakersfield, CA for basic training and school flight training. In the month of May 1944 he was transferred to Fort Sumner, NM for advanced training & graduation. Transferred to Roswell NM for B17 transition training and Alamogordo, NM for B-29 Crew Training. It was at Grand Island, Nebr that his squadron was formed. On a training mission from Puerto Rico, his plane crashed at Ft. Riley, Kansas. He was one of the few to survive. Suffered back injuries in the crash. Recovered at Grand Island Nebr. Hospital and was sent to Peyote, TX and made First pilot with own crew. Had a lot of back pain and was sent to Mc Mcclosky Genl. Hospital in Temple, TX for two months. The war ended in 1945 and he was mustered out on a disability Jan 1, 1946. Announcement in paper: Aviation Cadet Charles Donald Zimmer, son of Mr. & Mrs. C. D. Zimmer, of 1409 S. Flower St., will be graduated from Fort Sumner, N.M., AAF Pilot school. Having completed the advanced twin-engine training he will be commissioned a Second Lieutenant. Charles married (1) Audrey Jeannette BORN daughter of Nicholas Joseph BORN and Helen Alberta JENSON on 24 Dec 1943 in Visalia, CA. The marriage ended in divorce. Audrey was born on 31 May 1925 in Des Moines, IA. She died on 5 Jul 1992 in Norwalk, CA. SS#483-20-2986 verifies dates of birth and death. First date with Audrey was to the Butterfly restaurant. She had not done many things as a young girl. She worked at the Malt shop, that's were Chuck met her. Charles married (2) Carol Ida STEELE daughter of Carmi J STEELE and Clara E KELLER on 23 Nov 1976 in Downey, Calif. Carol was born on 27 Feb 1927 in Bell, Calif. She died on 2 May 1992 in Lake Havasu City, AZ. She was buried on 20 May 1992 in Rose Hills, Whittier, CA. She died of heart attack at age 65! Social Security #573-28-4836. Arnie Anderson with his relatives owned the Technical Glass Co. in Vernon, California. Alma Zimmer Anderson, her brother, Charles Dewey Zimmer and their step father, Charles Wilson worked there from 1930 to 1935. Arnie and Alma had the following children: 13 M i. Robert Lee ANDERSON.
