WILLIAM HENRY DOBBS came to the United States in 1822. He settled in Pennsylvania, the last place there being Washington, County; then in Marshall Co., WV in the Maggoty Run and Nauvoo Ridge Areas. Henry, as everything I have seen written about him lists, was blind. Family stories say he was blinded from illness while on the boat to the USA, but the obituary of his second wife, Mary, states that he was blind from birth. He was a farmer and a basket weaver. Family stories tell of him walking along the creek banks gathering reeds and sticks, after getting an armful, he would lay them in a pile then continue doing this until he had several piles. Then he would come back through, gathering them all up, and walk back home to make his baskets. He apparently had a pretty full and busy life, he had three wives and five children.

2 - AMOS DOBBS, b 10 May 1832, PA, d 18 Apr. 1898, Nauvoo Ridge, Marshall Co., WV. Married LOVINA E. HOPKINS, d/o JARRETT HOPKINS and SARAH ELLIOTT, on 1 June 1854 in Marshall Co., WV. Both are buried in the R.L.D.S. Cemetery, Nauvoo Ridge, Marshall Co., WV.

3 - RHODA DOBBS, b Abt. 1834, in PA, md ALBERT SCRAGES.

Ila Dobbs Kerns is still living in the house on Nauvoo Ridge, built by her father, that was the place of her birth.

The first collection is the RAYMOND DOBBS FAMILY. Raymond's parents were Raymond Dobbs, b. 26 July 1909 & Goldie Leona Hall, b. 9 Mar 1914. His grandparents were Alma Herbert Dobbs & Blanche Mae Chapman. In these pictures, there are McIlvains, Chapman, and many other family lines that married into this Dobbs family.

Alma Herbert Dobbs was born to Martha Jane Dobbs, the daughter of William Henry Dobbs and Anna Elizabeth Gill. Martha Jane was not married when she had him. They lived with her parents, Amos & Lovina Hopkins Dobbs, until she married Theodore Freelingheisen "Heis" (T. F.) McIlvain. Alma was a little more than 5 years old at that time. After her marriage, Amos & Lovina kept and raised Alma. Information from several Gill and Dobbs descendants indicates that Alma's father was one of the Gill brothers of Martha Janes mother.
