Service Record: At age 18, enrolled as a private at Wheeling on Mar. 24, 1864 (not assigned) and mustered in the next day to serve 3 years. “Credited to Marshall County.” “Killed in Action (Gunshot) Hatcher’s Run, Va. Oct. 27, 1864.” “Born at Allegheny County, Pa.”
He was unmarried and his parents later applied for and received government pensions.
James was living with his parents, William and Matilda Giles, and his sisters, Rebecca and Matilda, at the time of the 1860 Marshall County census. Brother, Hamilton, and his wife and daughter, lived nearby
