I think some of the birth locations in our
family Bible might shed some light for some
other Kanawha Cnty researchers. I believe
that Lily Ann Gatewood, wife of John Walden
(of the Caroline Cnty Waldens), is James
Madison Walden's mother. Virginia Marriage Index, 1740-1850 JAMES M.WALDEN/LUCY BRAGG 21 November Kanawha My family Bible has: "James M. Walden, son of John and Lel??? Walden" was born in "Spotsylvania, Cty. Virginia, September 16th 1811". d." Plattsmouth MO 1861" & in Matie's handwriting,. M. on 11-21-1833 in Teayses Valley, Kanawha Cty Virginia to Lucy Ann Bragg (daughter of Thomas S and Elizabeth Bragg) b. 9-11-1817 d. 5-5-1909 at Brighton, Colo.) This is from Lucy Ann's Bible. The book was published in 1801. Lucy Ann Bragg & James Madison Walden's children were: BORN in Teayses Valley, Kanawha Cnty, Virginia were: Wilhelmina Ann b. 5/21/1835 married to James M. Eaglin in Pike cnty, Illinois on 4/ 24/1853 d. 3/01/1857 BORN in Harrison County, Kentucky were: Alverah Jane b. 1/01/1837 d. 5 SEP 1838 and James (Alrar?) b. Wednesday (?) 8th/1838 d. 6 JUNE 1883 in Brighton CO He appears in the CO census in 1870 & 1880 as James "M" Walden. BORN in Teayses Valley, Kanawha Cnty, Virginia were: John Armetius b. D 12 Missouri Cavalry. (South) Private Bugler He appears in CO census and land records 1870 & 1880 and was the first postmaster of Walden, CO BORN in Highland Cnty, Ohio were:William (Theoses?) b. 9/20/1848 (no other information) and Lucy Elizabeth ("Lula") b. 10/09/50 She appears in 1870 & 1880 CO census in Denver, CO BORN in Marion Cnty, Missouri were: Madison Bragg b. 5/14/1856 d.7/21/1857 and Mary Eliza ("Matie") b. 4/28/1858 (in Hannibal, Mo) , married George Atwood Manfull on 7/18/1877 d. 27 Mar 1941 at Pacoima, CA These folks moved a lot, but their movements might indicate where other family members lived. And then from my cousin Florence and Walden Manfull in Idaho, "Do have a letter written in 1926 from Grandmother Manfull [Matie Walden) and she said her Dad died when she was four years old. Said she knew he was born in Virginia. She says she remembers her Mother (Lucy Ann Bragg Walden) saying that his home was on a high hill at the mouth of York River where it emptied into the bay. It must have been right on the bay for she said the tide came in every day. Just after they were married they moved to Kentucky near Lexington. Said she didn't know how many brothers he had. Said her Dad (James Madison Walden) had one brother she knew of named William and two sisters Rachel and Fanny. Rachel was an old maid and Fanny married a man named Hughes. Also said there were ministers on both sides of the family, Baptists on her Mothers side and Methodist on her fathers. This letter is hard to read from old age. It was written to Walt's folks when they lived in Redlands and she lived with Cy & Lucille in Glendale. She also said they lived in Missouri and moved back to Kentucky the year Lincoln was killed. This was one of the little tidbits I found last week. Know I had read it before and you may have heard about it. Your Grandpa always said his Grandpa was killed by the Jayhawkers because he talked too much." He was supposed to be a schoolmaster, which would explain a bit. About that time a threatening note was attached to the gate of his brother-in-law Thos. E. Strother Bragg in Holt county MO. I wish I had the text on that one! |
