CHILCOTT - WOLVERTON
Am checking on CHILCOTT, Jonathan, born Hardy Co. He married Rosanna
WOLVERTON of Shenandoah County. She is mentioned in the extensive Hottel
(Descendants of John Hottel) book published 1930. They are my GGGrandparents. Rosanna died
in 1892, Jonathan in 1881.
Their children are listed:
In looking over your query pages, I notice some Chilcott's/Silketts.
On another website, I saw that Jonathan was a son of Eben and Priscilla Claypole Chilcott of Hardy Co.
I also saw a marriage on your site: Eben Chilcott m. Jan. 1813 Priscilla Clapole.
Then another note on your site from Lynda Starbird regarding Priscilla who died 9-18-1856 near Mathias (Priscilla Claypool/Chilcott) Combs. I cannot see where Eben died (from your sites), maybe this is his widow, Priscilla who probably married a Combs?
Also I can't find Jonathan on your sites.
I have noticed in old Shenandoah County newspapers of the "Chilcote" claim to lands where the city of Baltimore now is.
Do you think it would be worth my while to come to WV, or maybe to pursue this in Maryland records? I am guessing that you all have all wills, deaths listed.
Any clue you may have would be most helpful. Sincerely, Judy Coffman Stickley, E-mail: jcstick@shentel.net

ELLIFRITZ - SINE - SIONS
My ancestor, Elijah ELLIFRITZ, was married in Hardy County to Elizabeth SIONS on 1 Nov
1827. They had at least one child, a daughter, born in Oct 1828, again in Hardy County. Her
name was Anna Rebecca ELLIFRITZ. As a young adult, she moved away from Hardy County
and lived most of her adult life in Illinois, married twice: McALLEN, and TRACY.
Elizabeth SIONS/SINE was a daughter of Adam SINE and Catherine HOUDESHELL, had been born in Shenandoah County, VA, in about 1805. I have reasonably complete data on Elizabeth, her parents, and their families. However, I am totally lacking any information on Elijah ELLIFRITZ, who must have come to Hardy County as a young man and may have lived his entire life there. DAVIS
I am trying to find information about a John DAVIS who lived on the
North Fork (perhaps a place called Sugar Tree Bottom). I believe he had a
son named Joseph (born abt. 1766) who married Mary SIMMONS (born abt. 1770).
I think he also had a daughter named Elizabeth who married Martin CARR in 1792. According to some research I have done on the internet, the John DAVIS I am interested in was apparently jailed during and after the Revolutionary War for treason and "other crimes." Trial records were mentioned at one site, and Morton's History of Pendleton County was listed as a source. I am descended from Joseph DAVIS and his Pendleton county descendants, and am trying to make some connection between him and John DAVIS. Do you think you can help? Or at least give me more information about John? Thanks. E-mail: jdavis1118@hotmail.com

CLARK
Looking for information about William CLARK, Daniel CLARK and John
CLARK, all listed together in 1787 tax records of Hardy Co.
Daniel CLARK and John CLARK and Thomas BORRER all had land suveys out of the same original 760 acre land grant on and along the North Fork, I believe in the area of Cabins, WV. and on to the south of there.
I believe Daniel CLARK was also the same one that had land in Upper Tract adjoining Martin JUDY. Martin JUDY Sr. (from Switzerland) was Eve BORROR's gr-grandfather. My 3gr-grandparents were Daniel CLARK and Eve BORER (BORROR), married by the Rev. David BADGLEY in 1795 in Hardy Co. I believe Daniel is a son of the Daniel in the tax records.
William CLARK was married in Scotland before coming to American probably about the time of the Rev. War. William CLARK went with David BADGLEY in 1797 to IL, but the family lost some young children and back-tracked to KY and then went to Ross Co., OH. Daniel and Eve CLARK went to adjoining Jackson Co., OH. Some of their children were born in KY. Many other Hardy Co. people also settled there in the northwest corner of Jackson Co. about 1800. These CLARKs do not appear to be connected to the New Jersey CLARKs related to the BADGLEYs who also came to Hardy Co. E-mail: jdclark@cedar-rapids.net

GROVES - TURNER
I have the following two possible clues only for my search for
Gracie Myrtle TURNER b. Mar. 1876 somewhere in West Virginia.
There is the one and only census that has been found (to date) with a Gracie M. TURNER listed, although the dates don't quite match ( I know sometimes the dates are off by years).
This is the census report:
1880 Census: Union District, Grant Co., West Virginia
Source: FHL Film 1255402 National Archives Film T9-1402 Page 220A
W. M. TURNER, self, white, age 26, married b. VA, Farm Labor, Fa.
b. PA, Mo. b. PA
Jane C., other, mulatto, age 26, married, b. VA, Keeping House,
Fa. b. VA, Mo. b. VA
Mary C., dau, mulatto, age 5, b. WV, Fa. b. VA, Mo. b. VA
Gracie M., dau, mulatto, age 2, b. WV, Fa. b. VA, Mo. b. VA
Orie E., dau, mulatto, age 11 months, b WV, Fa. b. VA, Mo. b. VA
The strongest clue in the census, other then the listing of the name Gracie M., is the fact that her sibling was named Orie. My grgrandmother named her one of her daughters Ora Pearl. Maybe Orie is a nickname for Ora?
I was also looking at the GROVE family of Grant Co. Per on-line genealogies I found this:
John GROVES m. Mahala Jane PHARES b. 1866, Pendleton Co., WV
Children :
Martha Alice m. C. O. TURNER
Nellie
Clarence B.
Gracie m. Jesse IDLEMAN
Edith m. Olin WEESE
Thomas
Myrtle m. ? TURNER
Bertha Susan b. 1886 m. Earl Trenton
Herman Frank b. 1888
Using the combinations of the siblings and spouses names, you have Gracie Myrtle TURNER, since naming patterns repeat themselves in the pioneer families you would think there is some connection. She also named a son Frank.
However, the dates just don't match.
This is my last brick wall for a grgrandparent. If anyone has the slightest clue that would help me find Gracie's family I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. Pat Thompson, E-mail:pat125@erols.com

GROVES - STINGLEY
Today I received a copy of Chenowith GROVES death certificate, #39969, State of Ohio,
Bureau
of Vital Statistics, Certificate of Death, from Ken Groves. This Chenowith is clearly not Isaac
Marian's GROVES son. He was born May 10, 1874 in West Virginia and died July 18, 1915 in
Fairfield, Madison Co., Ohio. I am guessing that he is the son of Isaac M. or N. GROVES who
was the son of Solomon Hiram GROVES, son of Isaac Marin and Susan Roby. This appears to
be
the line that Ken comes from and it was Solomon Hiram who inherited the GROVES' homestead
which Ken's family owned until recently. Chenowith's mother's name looks
like it is spelled Su-"s or z"- i -"s or z" STINGLEY. The notice was "sworn to" by Elizabeth
Chenowith GROVES. Eliza is the name on her death certificate and it lists her father as Jacob
Powell. Her day of death appears to be May 29, 1929 on her death certificate . I cannot read it
clearly but she was born June ?3, 1833. She was 95 years old. She lived at 536 Cathrine St.,
Columbus, Ohio at the time of her death. Age 95 yrs. 11 mo. 7 da. Certificate #34449
I will now re enter Susan ROBY as the wife of Isaac Marin GROVES in my files. I would appreciate any help with this line. E-mail:kdwgroves@yahoo.com

HAMPTON - WILLIAMS
Noah HAMPTON in his 1772 (probated 1775) Will, named a daughter Mathy: ... Andrew
HAMTON My Bible also I give and bequeath to my oldest daughter Mathy five shillings....
It has been reported that in the colonial eastern mountain dialect, "Mathy" is Martha.
7-31-1779 - Martha WILLIAMS to Garret VANMETER. Bill of Sale. Place on which she lived, for L500 pounds, one bushel salt, two bushels corn, one and one-half bushels wheat: rec. 8-10-1779. Wit: Jacob VANMETER, Noah WILLIAMS.
Engineering for Corridor H Highway Project (supplied by George M. Williams) indicates lot #4 of the South Branch Manor is owned by Martha WILLIAMS and "to Isaac VANMETER". I can not find anything from a Martha WILLIAMS to an Isaac VANMETER (in the property records up to 1800, Martha WILLIAMS South Branch Manor). The only record I have found so far is the sale from Martha WILLIAMS to Garret VANMETER in 1779, referenced above. Did Garret transfer this to son Isaac, thus the explanation of why it is in Isaac's name? Garret had a son named Isaac. Isaac was 27 years old when his father died (reportedly Garret died 15 Apr 1788), which probably means that Isaac inherited it, could this be why there isn't a deed from a Martha WILLIAMS to an Isaac VANMETER and the Highway Investigation notes the property as Martha WILLIAMS to Isaac VANMETER instead of Garret?
Considerable research and several different sources indicate that Lot #4 of the South Branch Manor is preciously where Noah Hamptons Mill Run is believed to have been located (Now know as Anderson Run and Walnut Bottom on today's maps). As is noted, a NOAH WILLIAMS is a witness to the sale by Martha WILLIAMS. So it would appear this Martha WILLIAMS had a son (or other relative name Noah). If her son or other relative, would it not seem that he might have been named after grandfather Noah Hampton? Noah's Mill location is referenced also in this recording: 1762 - Col. George Mercer of Frederick Co. 100 A. in Black Walnut Bottom adj. John Ryan, Noah Hamptons Run in Hampshire Co. Surv. David Vance. 1 Jan. 1762 nnlg/p128/K-342:
I have thus far not found a recorded transference by Noah Hampton of this property (Hamptons Mill Run) to anyone, yet a Martha WILLIAMS appears the owner of it, prior to the Vanmeters acquiring it?
Noah possibly could have conveyed the property in his 3 documents recorded in 1761. Noah possibly conveyed property in 1775 just before he died because he posted a bond. Any help in this regard would be most appreciated. Noah also has been reported to have given grandson Jonathan PURCELL a lot on the South Branch, I have not yet found a record of that.
George PURCELL, descendant of Noah Hampton through daughter Ann and discoverer of Noah Hampton's Will, states in a letter to Hampton researcher RB Cox, "I believe Mathy (Martha) married a WILLIAMS."
Anyone have any thought or information on this? Anyone else working on this? Any help is most appreciated. Karl Hampton, E-mail:khampton@mediaone.net

HEADLEY - RAWLES - RAWLS - RALLS - RUSH
Apparently, my g.g.g.grandfather John William RAWLES and his friend and business
partner of many years, John RUSH both signed: "Petition To Add A Portion of Hardy County to
Hampshire County" (1787) that I found on the Hardy County Genealogy web site, via a web
search.
Here is my current RAWLES Family patrilineal quest:
I'm seeking information on my g.g.g.grandfather John William RAWLES (b. 18 Mar
1755) who married Sarah "Sally" HEADLEY (b. 26 Feb. 1774, possibly in Virginia.) They were
married on 1 Oct. 1796 in Harrison County, Tennessee. A summary written by Eleanor Rawles
of
Lafayette Indiana states that John came from Baltimore County, Maryland and then in sequence
lived in New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, and finally in Indiana.
John and Sarah RAWLES had ten children.
John had a brother, Elisha RAWLES, (b. about 1772) who apparently married Sarah's sister or cousin, Frances HEADLEY (b. 1778). Elisha and Frances were married in Harrison Co. Kentucky in 1795. They eventually settled in Marion Co. Ohio. They perhaps had as many as 14 children.
I've been unsuccessful in finding any information farther back than the marriages of John and Elisha Rawles.
Oral history has it that John and Elisha were born in Baltimore County, but I've been unable to establish a firm link there.
According to Dick Shorr and Thomas Burke of the Ohio state Auditor's Office (614) 466-4514), John RAWLES (or RAWLE?) and John RUSH first filed on land in Ross County in the Northwest Territory (this portion later became Ohio) on July 9, 1801. They listed their Residence at time of entry as Ross County (which later became Pickaway County.) They paid $2 an acre for all of Section 12 and most of Section 13, Township 3, Range 22, Worthington Survey. The land totaled 1,183 acres. Their initial payment was $591.80. This was 1/4 of the total due--the balance was $1775.40. This land was later to become part of Pickaway County when it was incorporated in 1810.
I would greatly appreciate your help. ANY information on ancestors and/or descendent lines
would be greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks in Advance!

COX
Looking for Christopher COX, found in Lot #13 with Joseph INSKIP, who
had half, in South Branch Manor. I'm trying to connect this Christopher
COX with Friend, Gabriel, or Israel COX whose properties were along the
Potomac. Friend COX is mentioned in the South Branch Manor Rent Rolls.
Can you help me locate Lot #13 in present day terms? What is "the
Trough"? Downloaded the 1758 map and still can't figure location.
Christopher COX was an early settler to Washington Co.PA serving in Capt. Andrew Farley's regiment with Michael and Andrew COX, believed to be related somehow. Christopher was bca 1740 married to Margaret ---, sons John and Christopher Jr., daughters Christiana and Margaret. Historians seem to feel the numerous COXES who went to Washington Co. PA were interrelated, but do not specify how. I've not been able to find a Christopher in the John, Gabriel, Friend, or Israel COX families. If I knew where Christopher COX's Lot #13 was in relation to the other COXES, I might have a better argument.

LENTZ - SINE
In 1912 to 1914 a SINE, George (O,D,W ??) died and was buried somewhere I heard in Hardy
Co, WV. He had been married to Annie Mary LENTZ they had several children one of which
was only 2 years old when his father George died in maybe some kind of an accident. It is
possible the wife Annie Mary Sine (maiden Lentz) was not informed until after his burial.
Anyone
with any information please contact me at the email address pepsi3@ix.netcom.com.
Annie Mary (LENTZ) SINE later went on to marry a James F. PARSONS around March of 1914. It is told some of the children except the youngest Samuel were sent to live with Annie LENTZ's relatives in the Virginia (Bentonville) area???
George SINE may have died sometime around November of 1912, 1913, or 1914
even the month could be wrong. Also possible it was a train accident
working or walking on railroad???? Could be buried in a marked or
unmarked grave in Hardy County, WV???? Also possible at time of death
people did not know his relatives or at first his name????

CHILCOTT - CLAYPOOL - COMBS
Is anyone heading for the Hardy County Courthouse in Moorefield?
I need someone to look in the death register for Charles COMBS.
He was born 12 May 1812
He died August 1863 in Hardy County.
In abt 1832, he married 1st Priscilla CLAYPOOL who died 18 Sept 1856. In Dec. 1856 he married 2nd Mary Ann Chrisman CHILCOTT. Charles' parents were Francis Ignatius and Nancy Claypool Combs.
I need to know
All printed material shows Charles as buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Moorefield. He is not there. Yes, there is a civil war monument for the 18th Va. Cavalry. And yes, Charles is listed on that main monument as being in the 18th. However, he is not buried in any of the graves encircling that monument. Nor is he buried anywhere else in the cemetery.
I know that he should be listed in the death register in Hardy County. His 1st wife died in 1856 and she is listed along with all of the other information that I requested for Charles. So, I am reasonably certain that Charles' death in 1863 will also be listed.
I reside on the West Coast and am unable to get to Moorefield to do this research myself. I have volunteered to help east coast people with their West coast research and am hoping that someone can now help me with mine. Thank you, Lynda, E-mail: CHAT111@aol.com

FREDERICK
I am trying to track down information on my ancestor Sebastian FREDERICK. He was also
known by the name Bastian. He served in the Pennsylvania Militia during the Revolutionary
War. I have tracked him to West Mifflin, PA and have also uncovered information that he may
have spent some time in the area of what is now Moorefield, West Virginia. I believe his son,
Sebstian Junior was born there in 1763. The Frederick's later homesteaded an area in
Southwest Indiana. Does any of this ring a bell or have a possible link to Fredericks you may
have encountered in your research. I appreciate your help. Thanks, Bryce Moore, E-mail:

BOSLEY
James BOSLEY in the Hardy County 1850 census is my GGGgrandfather. I have heard about an
Indian GGGGgrandmother, but I can't as of yet find her. We are suppose to go back to the
Walter BOSLEY's of Baltimore, but again I can't find a connection. My father is 77, and moved
away when he was around 22 or so. He is a minister has been since the age of 18. Any how, no
one is left in his bunch except one uncle in Fl. now and he is in his 90's, and can't recall much.
We
had a cousin at some point that was starting to do the genealogy on the Bosley line
Arthur was his name but he never got too far! SO I guess it's up to me, so that my children and
granddaughter will know where she came from. I really appreciate all the help I can get.

HARNESS
Harness - Follow Up To Previous Post -- On Aug. 31 of 2000 I posted a query
about a Col. William H. HARNESS. It basically was asking for information about the company
he
organized during the Civil War; a company to which my g-grandfather, Harvey William RIFFEY
of Lost City, was a member. To up-date my posting with info I've received, for those who may be
interested, is as follows.
The Hardy Rangers were organized at Winchester in 1862 by Capt. William H. Harness and was assigened as Company B to Ashby's Cavalry. The Co. was made up of men mostly from Hardy Co. and many of them had served in the 14th Va. Militia.
After Ashby's death they were then assigned to the 17th Battalion of Virginia Cavalry as Co. B. This Battalion was also know as 1st Battalion of Va. Cavalry. Eventually in Feb. of 1863, this Battalion was re-organized and was designated 11th Regiment of Virginia Cavalry. The 11th Va. Cavalry, with the men of Co. B of Hardy Co. remained that way through the rest of the war.
For a limited time I have a copy of the muster roll of the 11th Va. Cavalry and if you would like to know if someone was a member of this regiment and what Co. they were in send me a query and I'll send you what info I might have. E-mail: gc1@mindspring.com
