This census was taken by Clifton and Lila Funkhouser March 26, 1975. They
recorded many Hardy County cemeteries and generously wanted their
work made available to the public; therefore, they gave a copy to the
Hardy County Public Library. It is reproduced here with permission
from the Library.
Baker Cemetery is located midway between Moorefield and Petersburg –
perhaps 300 or 400 yards from the old Baker home (now Harper home –
in 1975). It is across the road from the Baker house. A fence runs
through the burial ground – it is easier to get to it from the
back side. At Moorefield on US 220, go 6.6 miles south to Mailbox 6676, go through
the farm gate on the east side of US 220 and turn left. The cemetery
is on the hill.
On the south side of the fence is one stone, parts only remain, no
lettering.
Nicholas Baker son of A and E Baker 1810 – May 27, 1887
Anthony Baker, III son of A and E Ba 1806 – March 29, 1854
Elizabeth Baker wife of Anthony Baker 1772 – 1850
Henry Baker 1820 – 1895
Clarence Conway Tross Dec. 24, 1884 – Sept. 22, 1977
Sallie Virginia Duffy Tross Jun 28, 1887 – Feb 21, 1953
On the north side of the fence (all graves are close together):
“In memory of Elizabeth M. wife of John Warnstaff who died in the Triumph
of Faith, December 6th, 1854 in the 40th year of her age.” 1818 – 1854
(Note: Dates are questionable: 1854 – 1818 = 36, not 40 years old)
Jacob Warnstaff 1830 – 1847
There are no indications of other graves unmarked, but there might have
been some. No signs of prior fencing.
Above were relatives of Margie Fisher Bane – she has the payment receipts of most of the above stones.
