to Berkeley County West Virginia

Welcome to the Berkeley County, West Virginia, site for the WVGenWeb Project, part of the USGenWeb Project,
a massive undertaking to provide free resources to genealogists.

Berkeley County is the second oldest county in West Virginia and was created (while part of the state of Virginia) in 1772 from the northern third of Frederick County, Virginia. The county seat was established in the colonial village of Martinsburg and was incorporated in 1778.

During the Civil War Berkeley County, still a part of Virginia, experienced conflict and much destruction, as did other areas, and families became divided. After November 1863, Berkeley County became part of the new state of West Virginia.

My name is Marilyn Gouge and I am the volunteer county coordinator. This site is:

Part of the reason for these broken links is that our previous host, Rootsweb {purchased by Ancesstry earlier in this century), will no longer support web pages, Mailing Lists and Message boards. My understanding is that those mailing lists and message boards are somewhere on the web as Read-Only. You can still peruse them but you can't respond to them. I don't even know if you will be able to see the e-mail addresses of those who participated in the discussions unless they included their e-mail addresses in the body of the discussions. When I find the links for the read-only archives, I will include them. They might be better than nothing<

Genealogy Links

A subscription or fee may be required for some of these links, but most offer some information for free. Some also offer a "trial period", where you can research free for a certain amount of time before deciding to join the site or purchase the software. Others are completely free. Some links may be for the purchase of software to keep track of your family trees. For now, they are just listed; in the coming weeks I will research each of them to determine the status. Note: these are listed in slphabetical order, not in order of which are free, the best, preferences, etc.

Ancestry
Fee required for complete access, but does offer a free trial and provides some information for free.

Lineages
At first glance, this website appears to be a DNA analysis website, a very expensive process! Will be reviewing it further.
