SCOTT

My great Grandfather was Amos Hawker SCOTT, born outside Morgantown, WV IN 1880. He owned a large farm near Morgantown, in the area called National, WV His father was Marshal SCOTT, born around 1840 (Monongalia Co., WV) and his father was James SCOTT, born around 1815 (Monongalia Co., WV). Does anyone have information on James SCOTT's Father, Grandfather, etc.? I think there is a connection to earlier SCOTT's in the area. They were Jacob SCOTT (Married Catherine MORGAN, Daughter of Zackquill MORGAN - founder of Morgantown), who died in 1808, Col. James SCOTT, born 1764 & died in Morgantown, WV in 1848 and Captain David SCOTT, born 1737. Captain David SCOTT had obtained 4000 acres from VA for his service in the Revolutionary War. Thank you very much- Scott A. Rice E-Mail= srice12960@aol.com

HEDRICK - SHANK

I am seeking any information about my great grandfather, Isaac Y. HEDRICK, who was born in Phillipi, WVa, in 1838, and in adulthood moved to Wood County where he spent the remainder of his life. He is listed in the 1860 Barbour Co.Census, at age 22, living with the family of Jacob SHANK. There is an Isaac Y. G HEDRICK, whom I believe to be my great grandfather, listed in the 1850 Hardy Co. census along with his father, Jacob HEDRICK, his mother, Sarah HEDRICK, and six siblings. Any information about this family would be much appreciated. Thanks for your help. Russ Tice rtice@calpoly.edu

HERSMAN - NAY - PIERCE

My Grandmother was Mary Ellen PIERCE, there is record of her marriage on March 24, 1873 to Enoch NAY in the Barbour county court house, however, I have been able to find out nothing whatever about her, in addition to that.

No record of who her parents were, no record of her in Barbour county census.

1870 census of Preston county lists a Mary Ellen PIERCE as a domestic in household of Phillip R. HERSMAN at age of 19 but I have no idea if this is same person.

Story is that Enoch NAY was confederate soldier in battle of Phillipi and was wounded so that he could not depart with his division (I believe they were retreating) and he was taken in by a local family, although the story is that they were northern sympathizers, and taken care of until he was able to travel.

After war his wife died and he returned to marry girl who had taken care of him while he was recovering. If this is same person listed in 1870 census as being 19 years old she would have been born about 1851 and only about 10 years old at time of battle of Phillipi.

What I have related here is actually all I have been able to find about her. If you could direct me to any additional information or person who might have additional information it would be greatly appreciated. And Many Thanks! Paul Nay, Rt. 2, Box 238, Jane Lew, WV 26378 e-mail - Pnay7408@aol.com

Paul, I found a Mary E. Pearce living in the household of Jacob Woodford in the 1850 Barbour County Census. Mary E. was age 8 and most probably the daughter of Hannah Pearce age 28 who was also living in that household. Can any Woodford researchers help with this query? Margaret Lew.

IREY - VOTAW

I was at the Barbour county courthouse and the city library this summer. While getting lost I saw a highway marker for an old Quaker Cemetery. But, stupid me, with a trailer, I didn't stop. I found that the courthouse does not have the information I needed, nor was the library equipped to answer my questions. What is the story on the cemetery?

I do know this. About 1792, my ancestors left Loudon Co. Va, headed west. They stopped in Harrison Co., and purchased land near the Tygart Run. Some of the land was set aside for a Quaker church, according to deed records in Harrison Co. They eventually sold the land and moved on toColumbiana Co. Ohio around 1800.

Now, the big problem. Barbour Co. was formed from Harrison . They kept the early land records, and Barbour doesn't have those. I think they start in 1859 or so. So, there are no records about the cemetery in Barbour. And, I don't know if Harrison has any records either. I think I may have a direct ancestor there. The land was owned by Moses VOTAW. Samuel and Philip IREY owned some land there also. Sam is my direct line. But I think their father, Philp IREY Sr. may be buried there. Are there any records about the Quakers being there, and about the cemetery? E-mail: IREYT@svusd.k12.ca.us

CUPP - HANNIGAN

I am researching the name HANNIGAN or HANIGAN. My great grandmother, Anna Hannigan married William CUPP about 1873-74. I am trying to find out if she is the Ann listed as the 18 year old dau. of Thomas and Mary HANNIGAN in the 1870 Census(Pleasant twp., Barbour Co.). I believe this is so because they are the only couple with this surname where the husband came from Ireland and the wife from PA. These are the locations of birth given by Anna in later censuses. This family lived in Harrison Co. in 1860. In 1870 Thomas HANNIGAN owned property in Pleasant twp (post office-Pleasant Creek).

According to the census they are in Barbour Co. 1850, 1860, 1870, and in Tucker Co.1880. According to The History of Tucker Co. her father's name is John of Barbour Co. All records says her birth date is between 1822 and 1829. According to Tucker Co. death record on August 21, 1904 she was 75 years old. She is buried in MT. Pleasant Cemetery on Texas Mountain, Tucker Co. I would like her birth date. I need her parents names. I have never found her parents in Barbour Co. or the area.
Other VALENTINE's living in the area are: Eunice b. 1835 -m. Robert PHILLIPS; Mary M. b. 1832- m. Aaron PHILLIPS; Nancy b. 1826 - m. William AUVIL; William b.1822 - m. Christina PHILLIPS; John b. 1814 - m. Anna HOUDERSHELL; Henry b. 1806 m. Matilda ?; George b. 1800-1810 m. M. Does anyone have any info on the Valentine family living in this area? ANDERSON - McWILLIAMS

I'm looking for information about the death of Andrew ANDERSON and his wife Eliza Ann (McWILLIAMS) ANDERSON. They both died of cholera on the same night. Unfortunately, I don't have a date....I'm fairly certain that it happened between 1850 and 1860.
This is the family in the 1850 Barbour Co. Census:

Andrew Anderson 60 Va farmer
Eliza Ann 42 Va
Mary 21 Va
Martha 19 Va
Lydia 16 Va
John 14 Va
Elizabeth 11 Va
Maria 6 Va
John McWilliams 90 Md farmer
I have talked to several Anderson researchers (who are not direct descendants of Andrew, but are related through his brothers) who had heard the story of both Andrew & Eliza dying the same night. They had also heard that the ENTIRE family died from cholera. I know that this isn't true....Martha was my great-great grandmother. I know that she married Jesse Peterson in 1854. They can be found in 1860 in Lewis Co. and her sister Elizabeth is living with them. In the 1860 Barbour Co. census, Mary and Maria(h) are found living in the John A. McWilliams household as domestics. (He must have been a cousin or something.)
I guess what I would like to find out is: when did Andrew & Eliza die and where are they buried?
Mary, Martha, and Elizabeth all ended up in Sullivan Co., Missouri. What happened to the other Anderson children?
If anyone can help me answer those questions and/or are related in some way, I would love to hear from you. Sorry this is so lengthy. Thanks. Julie Mathews mathews@ponyexpress.net

O'NEAL - THOMPSON

I am trying to find information about Michael O'NEAL of Barbour County, WV. Michael was born about 1783 and died 1860. More complete information on these dates and where buried would be helpful. Michael apparently settled on a farm about 2 miles from Philippi. More info on farm and how it was passed down would be very appreciated. I think it passed from Michael O'NEAL to Samuel (son of Michael) to Salathiel Lee (son of Samuel) to Lucy Knapp O'NEAL (wife of Salathiel) to James O'NEAL (son of Salathiel and Lucy O'NEAL). Maybe you could tell me how to find the information on the past owners and the dates of change of ownership. Michael O'NEAL came to WV prior to 1805 as he apparently married Mary THOMPSON on Feb 20, 1805. I have heard that Michael's father was named in the marriage data as Thomas. Other O'NEAL that were probably related were Joseph, David and John. Any help in establishing the relationships would be appreciated. eon

PHILLIPS

I am having trouble locating a marriage record for one of my ancestors. My hope is that if I can find him in the 1870 census, I might be able to figure out where he was married. I have copies of all three "History of Tucker County" books, and the 1860 Tucker census is reprinted there. Does anyone have access to (or does such a thing exist) the 1870 census for Tucker County?

Here's the information I have. Maybe it will ring a bell with someone:
James William Phillips (sometimes James W., sometimes J.W.) - born abt. 1855, probably in Randolph Co. Died 1925 in McCoole, Alleghany Co., MD (near Keyser, WV). Marriage record from second marriage says "son of Marshall and Mary Phillips", but I have been unable to find them. On James' death certificate, it gives father's birthplace as "unknown" and mother's birthplace as Barbour County.
Married 1st Lucinda Phillips, d/o David and Mahala Phillips. This is the marriage record I am trying to locate. Based on the birth of their first child, I estimate that the marriage would have occurred about 1873. Lucinda was born abt. 1849 in VA. I have not been able to locate a birth record for her, other than the 1850 and 1860 census information. She died in 1884 in Tucker County. They had three children: Mary Elizabeth, Matthew L., and Thomas L.
In Oct 1884, about 6 months after Lucinda's death, James married Lucinda's sister, Arthelia Phillips, in Tucker County. My questions:
1) Was there a James W. (J.W., James William) Phillips, age abt 15, son of Marshall and Mary Phillips, living in Tucker County in 1870?
2) I have already looked for them in Barbour and Randolph in 1870 -- no luck. Any suggestions on where else I should check?
Thanks for your help.

KELLER - PHILLIPS

I would like to hear from anyone who is researching the KELLER name. My Delilah PHILLIPS (b. abt 1832) was married to a Mr. KELLER, whose first name I have not yet been able to learn. I am currently trying to determine his given name.

In the 1870 Barbour County Census, Delilah Phillips KELLER is shown at age 38, (therefore born about 1832) living with Thomas and Hannah PHILLIPS (presumably her parents). Also residing with her are George KELLER, age 11, and Rachel KELLER, age 4. An Elizabeth KELLER, age 16, is residing nearby in the home of James R. PHILLIPS, Delilah's brother, and this may be Delilah's eldest daughter. In the 1860 Barbour County census index, Delilah KELLER is listed as a widow, age 38, (therefore, born abt. 1822 - a possible typo) with Elizabeth, age 6, (b. abt. 1854) Elijah, age 5 (b. abt. 1855), and George, age 2. (b. abt. 1858). Based on the ages of her children in 1860, Delilah probably would have married Mr. Keller around 1853. This would have made Delilah almost 31 at the time of her marriage -- fairly old for that time period. Therefore I believe that her age in 1860 was 28, not 38). I was unable to locate a marriage for a Delilah Phillips in the book "Barbour County Marriages 1843-1893" or in Randolph County Marriages 1787-1923." In the 1850 Barbour County Census, Delila PHILLIPS, age 20 (therefore born abt. 1830) is residing with her parents, Thomas W. and Hannah PHILLIPS, and her brother, Eli (age 27), sister Agnes (age 16), Joseph (13) and Jonathan (8). Thanks for any help you can provide.

Am descendant of CROSS family which still lives on Hunter Fork Road, near Stringtown. Family on land since approx. 1800 when "triple great" grandfather, Barton CROSS, born there. "Quadruple great" grandfather John CROSS reputed to have 30 children by 3 wives and name of last wife (mother of Barton) was Barbara BOOHER. Unable to find more info re: John CROSS i.e., when he settled there, where he came from, etc. From research done by my mom and cousin, Owen Wyatt, understand that courthouse fire in late 1800s caused loss of many records in pre-1800 era. From recent book, believe family came into area 1795-1800 because area not safe from Indian raids until Treaty of Greenville, 1794. Any info or thoughts you might have as to where I might look for info on John CROSS would be appreciated. Family has substantial Civil War service in Confederacy - grave of "double great" uncle Simpson Cross in Stringtown Cemetary reflects service in 62 Va. Infantry and "double great" grandfather Daniel Cross lost at Battle Camp Alleghany,Dec. 1861 while serving 31 Va. Infantry. Thanks Chas. W. Cross (cwcrosshome @worldnet.att.net)

POST - REGER
I have been researching the POST family in Barbour and Upshur Counties. My great great grandfather Stephen POST married Leah REGER after 1850. His parents were Daniel and Mary POST. I located this information on the 1850 US Census for Barbour County, VA. I know he had a brother Nicholas and George who were living in Barbour and Upshur County in 1860 and 1870. Daniel and Mary were still living in Barbour County in 1880 as was George. Stephen and Leah POST moved to Fulton Co, Illinois in 1863 or 1864. Believe Stephen may have had older siblings as Daniel was 50 years old and Mary was 49 years old in the 1850 Census and Stephen was the oldest child at home . He was about 20 years old at that time.
I would be very interested in finding Leah REGER POST parents etc. My search in the census records have been to no avail. Would also be pleased to get any information on either family which you or anyone else has. Darlene McGuire, E-Mail DBMCGUIRE@worldnet.att.net

Darlene, Leah REGER's parents were Abram REGER (1795-1886) and Leah Ann BRAKE (1795-1835). I have more to share with you in my Reger files. My notes say that Abram Reger went to Illinois before the Civil War. He returned to WV and is buried with his wife Leah in Upshur County. Margaret Lew.
