PHILLIPS - POTTS

I have have been researching the PHILLIPS roots in WV. My great-grandmother was Dora Belle PHILLIPS, who married Wade Hampton POTTS.

I have traced down a great deal of my ancestry for the PHILLIPS, but also came a question:
In regards to Thomas Fretwell PHILLIPS are we related to Christopher PHILLIPS of Watertown, MA linkage or to the Thomas Fretwell PHILLIPS of York, Co., VA?

I now have available the ancestry for both linkages back to the mother countries.

Does anyone have firm confirmation of which Thomas Fretwell Phillips family that we belong? Can we share information?

ANNON - MARTIN - MYERS

I am seeking any help in locating information regarding Joshua and Orpha MARTIN. I have conflicting information regarding the maiden name of Orpha, I have a death certificate of a child showing his mothers maiden name as Orpha ANNON, and then I have other researchers report that it may be MYERS. I have located this couple on the 1850 Barbour Virginia (now WV) census. They show that they have been married with in the year (1849-1850). Could you please look in your reference books to see if you can locate them. This family migrated from Barbour County to Illinois, Missouri and to Arkansas. I am also looking for someone that may be willing to help me research information regarding this family in the Barbour or surrounding counties. I have very limited resources for this area and any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Terry Martin

Taylor Drain Cemetery

As of September 2006 the Taylor Drain Cemetery is now owned by the Taylor's Drain Non-Profit Cemetery Association, Inc. The WV Methodist Conference deeded the cemetery over to the association and the new deed will be recorded at the Barbour County courthouse in Philippi, WV within the next two weeks. The church was destoyed in 1944 and never rebuilt. Someone must have the old records, that church was founded in 1850. There must be photos, death certificates, newspaper articles, etc. some where. Please help us find out more about the church and the people buried in the cemetery. We have started the repairs, etc. Volunteers and donations would be a great help. Information: 301-432-5975.

POLING - PRICE - WRIGHT

I am trying to straighten out my deceased father's notes on our PRICE family. I am a descendant of John Robert PRICE (1833-1903) and Mary England Price Thorn FOSTER (1842-1934) They are buried in the Sugar Creek Cemetery where I visited in Nov. of 2004. John's father and grandfather, perhaps also a William PRICE, is the puzzle. I have conflicting dates on his demise, but from the census records, I think he is the William who was born in MD around 1797 -1881. The family oral history says that he was buried on John Robert's farm and not in a cemetery. His first wife was Anna POLING and from the Belington Library's death records, I assume he had another one named Nancy Jane WRIGHT. Is there a marriage record to verify this?

Do you have any contact with the Price families still living in the Belington area? I wrote nine letters to addresses from the telephone book, looking for pictures of my g-grandparents, but no one answered me. Is it possible to get John Robert's will online?

I am the local historian for my town in Perrysburg, Ohio, 388 miles away from Belington. Judith Price Justus History4u@aol.com

COOPER

I am trying to locate information regarding a COOPER family that lived in the Elk district of Barbour county in 1880. Their names and ages on the census were:
Virgile Cooper 54 b. bt 1824-1826
Catherine Cooper 34
Mary Jane Cooper 24
Alfred Cooper 22
Eulyses Cooper 13
Sarah E. Cooper 9
Samuel Cooper 6
Ida B. Cooper 4

I believe Virgil and Catherine may have died in Barbour Co betw 6-1880 and 1900.

Do you know of any means in Barbour that I would be able to access death records or any other records that might help to track them down?

Also, could you add my name and email address to the list of people researching Coopers? Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely, David Cranford

PEPPER

I'm looking for the burial site of William Pepper who died May 29, 1841. We know that on April 10, 1833 he was living in Harrison County because it is so stated in his application for Revolutionary War Pension filed on that date in the Harrison County Court. My understanding is that Barbour County was formed from parts of Harrison, Lewis and Randolph Counties. Perhaps he lived in the part of Harrison County which later became Barbour County in 1843. If so, it would make sense that his grave is in what is now Barbour County, formerly part of Harrison County.

According to the book Revolutionary War Graves Register by Clovis H. Brakebill, Hennington Publishing Co., 1993, page 476, William Pepper was buried in Barbour County but I do not find his name on any of the cemeteries listed on the WV GenWeb. I used the search engine and did not come up with anything about him. Can you tell me who I might ask where he is buried? Thanks for your help.

His son, Johnson Pepper, settled near King's Knole, on the Brushy Fork of Elk. From what we can tell that is approximately where Pepper, WV is (just east of Phillippi). In October 2004, when we were in West Virginia, we walked through the Creslip Cemetery in Pepper but didn't find anything.

Thanks for posting a query on the website and for the helpful tips. Ed Morrison

In 1900 he's in Preston Co. Can you tell me if he is still in Barbour Co in 1890 and also if there is a Simon DEAHL living in Barbour Co. Thanks so much Bev
