'HEISLEYWOOD'- anyone know of its location? JHW was also a 'president' of the
West Virginia Northern Railroad at some point!

JOSEPH
I am doing a sesarch for my 3rd great grandfather and believe he lived near what is now Tygart
Lake near where Barbour County and Taylor county come together. Of course this was Randolph
County then. The 1810 Census shows a Joseph JOSEPH and his son John JOSEPH
living in that area. The 1820 census shows Joseph JOSEPH still there - but his son and family are
gone and I think they came to Ohio (Greene or Brown Counties). I have more info that can
follow. But, not sure how all this works. Would like to hear from you and thanks.

SHERMAN - SHIREMAN
Seeking information regarding Barbour Co., WV families, i.e., John
SHERMAN/SHIREMAN married Sarah FITZWATER and were the parents of Martin
Van Buren SHERMAN (SHIREMAN). The SHERMAN (SHIREMAN) family migrated to
Barbour County from the Hardy County area. Martin SHERMAN (SHIREMAN)
married Engaby JOHNSON in Barbour County in 1867.
Samuel MINEAR married to Catherine PHILLIPS. Trying to find the parents
and siblings of Samuel MINEAR. Samuel born in the Tucker County area. He
was born approx. 1824 - 1825. Do not find him after the 1860 Barbour
County Census.
Catherine PHILLIPS married to Samuel MINEAR; don't know where. Trying to
find her parents and siblings. Catherine PHILLIPS born approx. 1818
-1819. May have been daughter of Rachel and John H. PHILLIPS per
suggestion of Don Norman. I don't find her after the 1860 Barbour County
Census.

HILL - RIGHT - WRIGHT
I am searching for any info on the other HILL family, not the Edward Hill family. My father's
name was Harold Lee HILL. His father Lee HILL was married to a daughter of Arnold RIGHT (I
confirmed all of this through census records from 1880 - 1910). Please if anyone can give me
additional info I would deeply appreciate it. From the census records it indicates that both families
lived in the Grant District.
One of my father's brothers died while crossing one of the covered bridges in Barbour county
around 1905 - 1915. If you could also help me there I would be so thankful.
From my grandfather (Lee Hill or William Lee HILL) back is like a black hole. I can't find
anything on the HILL line. Thanks...Jeff Hill

GERARD - GERARDI
Looking for information on GERARD's who lived in Phillipi. Sebastian immigrated from Italy,
arriving in NY Feb 22, 1901. Sebastiano (or West) worked for Waddell Fuel Co. in the coal
mines. His wife Maria Guzzi came over on June 28, 1906 (!) the Ellis Island records her going to
see her husband, Sebastiano Veraldo (sp? unclear) in Moulesburg, PA. However, I
know that the family moved to Brownsville, PA at some point and ended up in
Galloway, WV after living in Simpson, Grafton, and Phillipi.
There were about 13 children:
- Anthony born 1929;
- Boy born 1901 in Italy;
- Susie born 1903;
- John Dominic born 1907;
- Anna Maria born 1909;
- Frank born 1910;
- Rose Mary born 1915;
- Josephine born 1917;
- Salvatore (Sam) born 1918;
- Albert born 1920;
- Jimmy born 1922;
- Carmen Anthony born 1923;
- Maria Teresa born 1925.
Sebastian's brother, Sam (Salvatore) also lived in WV and I have found census
info on his family. His great-grandchildren still live in WV.
I am trying to locate the descendants of another brother, Vincent
(Vincenzo) who came to America, made his fortune and returned to Italy, reported
to be a rich man. (so the story goes) My final goal would be to visit
Italy, meet the cousins and see where these people came from. It was
almost a spiritual experience learning about my own family and I want to
preserve the Italian heritage for my husband and our children.
Before my father-in-law passed away, I saw a copy of his birth certificate
which listed him as Frank Gerardi, born Oct 19, 1910, but I have not been able
to obtain a copy of it from the WV vital records. Most of his brothers and
sisters eventually moved to Baltimore, MD for work and their descendants still
live in that area.

CHAPMAN - STEPHENS - STEWART -
STUART
Researching Valentine CHAPMAN and wife Ruth STEPHENS removed to Harrison County
about 1804. Probably lived elsewhere for a couple of years possibly West Milford or Weston area
- he purchased a place on Elk Creek from George ARNOLD. He probably moved there in the
1810's.
There appears to be another CHAPMAN line that establishes in the same area in the 1860's.
Looking for a connection and origin on this line.
Also looking for history of families in the area of Chapman's settlement. Also researching history
of land transfers and historical cemeteries from split in rd from 57/20 to 119.
Does anyone have info on George STEPHENS of Harrison County and Stephens Run off Cr 20 a
branch of Elk Creek??

I am searching for anyone who may know where the graves of
Keziah STEPHENS and husband Edward STEPHENS are located. They are most
likely not together. I know that Keziah died before Edward. They are
recorded in Harrison Co. records and Barbour Co. Records. (Land)

positive on the location. A connection to the Banister STEVENS line is

Do you know where I could purchase a copy of the Kessel book that was written? I visited not
too many years ago and attended church at Oak Grove Methodist but it was a Sunday and
everything was closed. We were treated royally and spoke to many folks at the church. Since it
was just a weekend jaunt and we had to return to work on Monday, we couldn't stay over and
investigate too much. My g-g-g-g-g grandfather moved through that area on his way to Mason
County, WV but I'm still curious as to who could have been related to him there.

AUVIL - GROSE - McDONALD - McDANIEL
We are researching my wife's Great grandfather, Benjamin Franklin McDONALD. He was born
1861, died in 1915, in Richwood, Nicholas County; His remains were shipped to Parsons, in
Tucker County, to his son Raymond's home. He is buried in the Pifer Mountain Cemetary off
state highway 38. He was married to Amelia Mille AUVIL on 18 December 1884 in Barbour
County. We have only a bible handwritten note that BF's father was named Henry McDONALD.
BF's Mother was Margaret Anne GROSE, born 25 Dec 1844, daughter of Peyton H. and
Margaret (Peg) GROSE, maiden name unknown.
We have traced Amelia's ancestry back to Germany, but cannot find anything to authenticate
Henry McDONALD's existance, census wise or otherwise. We believe that Henry and Margaret
GROSE had the following children, (according to family notes written prior to 1958): Florence,
Mary, Rose ( who married a Metz), Margaret (who married a Nestor), Joseph Peyton, John,
James, and of course Benjamin Franklin.
Also, with very little substantiation, are listed Henry's siblings: Bill, Ann (who married a Hessard),
and what looks like a Bilerz. There is an arrow pointing to the point where Henry is shown with
the words " Barbour-Shilo"
Any thing you could locate to help us locate BF's ancestors woulod be vary much appreciated.

HUDSON - HUMPHREYS - STONE
I am looking for information (birth location and
parents) for Emanuel STONE, born about March, 1838. He
married Elizabeth Jane HUMPHREYS, born about May,
1836. They were married in Barbour County. Their
oldest son, Garnett Davis STONE. was born about
1861-1862 in West Virginia. Emanuel and Elizabeth both
died between 1920-1930 in Kansas. Her parents were
Thomas S. HUMPHREYS and Matilda HUDSON. It is possible
that Emanuel also was known as Edmund, as has been
reported in his Civil War records. He enlisted
5-14-1861 in the 31st Infantry Regiment of Virginia
(Confederacy) and was wounded July 3, 1863 at the

When I first spoke to a clerk in May 2005, she said Sally KELLER
MITCHELL and niece Sarah KELLER died on the same day, then had a
question and sent me the photocopy (not the usual but she was a bit
confused by the nearly identical names and same dates). I am very
thankful to be able to clear up a discrepancy for many researching
this family.
I now can see the photocopy that the "two sets" of tallies in the
Death Date column are actually for the month *only* and the *date* was the
11th, with 11 looking like tallies. The other handwritten entries confirm
this. I assumed from first glance it was two tallies, reflecting the
previous entry but it is indeed Dec 11th. I have recently amended my tree
to reflect the correct date of the 11th...It's one of those you have to see
the actual record to realize the fallacy.

DEMOSS - HADDIX - JOHNSON - LYNCH - MCDANIEL -
MINEAR - THORN
James Edward LYNCH was married to Margaret A. JOHNSON. They are listed on the 1850
census. He age 26, painter and her age 20 living in Philippi. Children: Theodore, Hugh. On the
1860 census he is a mechanic, and add children Anna J. (my great, great grandmother) and Poll.
After that I can find nothing on James or Margaret. Does anyone know what happened to them,
or who there parents were?
Also, a William HADDIX b ca. 1758 married a Mary or Mary Katherine and apparently had a
daughter Mary HADDIX who married Aaron McDANIEL. Can anyone demonstrate that the
Mary "Katherine" who married William HADDIX was the daughter of John MINEAR who was
killed by the indians in 1781?

DORTH
UPDATED: Looking for family information. My grandfather (possibly Charles L. DORTH) was
born in Barbour County June 6, 1885. Not sure of his parents -- possibly his mother was "Annie
O'DAY", but not sure of the spelling. Could be Fannie or Fanny. Could be ODEA. Possibly had
two siblings (James and Blanche?) "Blanche" was the youngest. His mother and "Blanche" left
the boys to be raised by their maternal grandmother. The siblings may have ended up in West
Virginia, Maryland, or Pennsylvania and had families there.
My grandfather may have been forced to run away from home around or before the turn of the
century. May have later had employment with the Jones Laughlin Steel Company. Sent to
Spottsville, Kentucky (on a train) to build a tipple for a coal mine there. This was either in 1907
or a couple of years earlier.
Does any of this ring a bell? Is there a history of the DORTH name in the area? Not sure where
to look. If any one has information, I can help with the other side (his wife's family in Kentucky
and Indiana) of the family. Thanks

REXRODE - PUFFENBARGER - SWITZER
Last year you graciously responded to my request about Anthony Q.
SWITZER (husband of Martha Bersheba REXRODE, saying that perhaps Barbour
County held some information. We have been documenting this lineage, and
believe that Martha is the daughter of Daniel REXROAD (REXRODE) and his
wife Esther PUFFENBARGER. (Most likely of Pendleton County).
Gil Kaufman of Palatines to America did some research for me recently, and
GEDCOM gave the above information. My question today is where can I find
documentation that Martha is their daughter? She was born in 1828 by my
records (one source states that all of Daniel and Esther's children were
born "about 1832" (Daniel and Esther were married about 1830 accordng to
GEDCOM's source.)
I need documentation, and have tried to find it in Wills, but none exist
in Pendleton County for either Daniel or his father Leonard; could they be
in Hardy or Ritchie County where author Minnie Lowthar states that Daniel
REXRODE was a merchant there at one time? (History of Ritchie County,
VA/WV by Minnie Lowthar. (Pub. in 1911).
I look forward to your reply, Thank you, Geraldine Rasmussen

KOONTZ - POLING - PRICE - STONESTREET
I am researching the family of Wm. PRICE father of Isaac (no arms) PRICE. Wm was also the
father of Rachel, Angeline, Albert, John, Jane Amanda, James, Catherine, Silas and Wm. GW
PRICE.
I have recently been in contact with the line of Albert PRICE . Harrison Jackson PRICE son of
Albert, lived with his grandfather Wm and later became a Brigadier General. In paperwork
discussing entrance into the SAR he states his Great Grandfather was Wm PRICE of Prince
Edward Co., VA. He also states this Wm's father was Charles PRICE (b. abt 1754) also of Prince
Edward. Co., VA.
If anyone has ever heard this theory of Wm. PRICE of Barbour Co. and wants a copy of this
documentation I will email you it. I am also very interested in doing more research on this lineage
and proving this is the right line for Wm of Barbour Co. HAPPY HUNTING!

BISHOP - SMITH
Stephen BISHOP (son of Thomas BISHOP and Margaret Unknown) and his wife Naomi SMITH
(daughter of Samuel SMITH and Naomi WHITACRE) bought land located on Little Hackers
near Philippi, Barbour County, WV, from Samuel and Naomi SMITH between 1794-1805. Has
this area ever been considered the Shenandoah Valley? Several of Stephen and Naomi's children
claim to have been born there. Their children include Thomas, Samuel, John, Stephen Jr., Mary,
Margaret, and two other girls possibly named Sarah and Naomi. Other residences for this family
include Baltimore (now Harford) County, MD; East Bethlehem Twp., Washington Co., PA;
Richland County, OH. I'm looking for information about and descendants of this family. Thanks.

High Schools
I am looking for information regarding a black high school once operated in Philippi. The only
thing I know about the school is that it was in operation during the 1939-40 school year, when it
was listed as "Colored High School" in the state educational directory. I would appreciate any
information (dates of operation, name of school, mascot and school colors). I would also like to
hear from someone who knows the histories of Belington, Kasson, and Philippi high schools and
may have pictures of them.

whether they had a daughter, Sarah who married Isaac TETER, of Belington, Barbour Co., WV.

HOWE - LANTZ - WOODFORD
Many of my genealogical roots lie in Barbour County, VA, but it is
difficult for me to research because I live in Florence, SC. I believe
that my great-great-grandparents were George Eurid LANTZ and Mary Frances
WOODFORD. I think that Mary's parents may have been William WOODFORD and
Frances HOWE. However, I cannot prove that.
I read in Maxwell's The history of Barbour County, West Virginia: from its
Earliest Exploration and Settlement to the Present Time about a William
WOODFORD who settled in Barbour County. Do you have access to any
records which would give a more detailed history of the Woodfords in
Barbour County or any of the people I listed above?
Thanks for any help you can give.

My ancestor John THOMPSON, and his wife Martha (nee JACKSON), are listed in the census of
1850 for Barbour County. I am interested in finding any forebears, if possible his parents. Since I
know he spent part of his life in Farquar County Virginia, they may have been located there, but I
have come up dry on computer resources. Could you give me any suggestions? I will be deeply
grateful if you can, and in any case thank you for attending to this email.

BOWER - BOWLING - BOWEN - GILL - STEVENS
Lucinda was the daughter of Banister STEVENS. He died in 1863. His will a portion of land
goes to his children from first marriage. Lucinda was one of the daughters. I can locate all the
children except her. The deed of partition dated 1887 by John GILL lists her name as Lucinda
BOWLING. Earlier records list her as BOWERS/BOWENS. I would like to know if someone
can check the deeds of Barbour Co. to see if there was a sale of this portion of land after 1887 to
see if Lucinda and her husband William may be living out of the area. I find the siblings in
Harrison and surrounding counties.
I thank you for any help that I may get.

KELLEY - NESTOR - PHILLIPS - PRITCHARD
I am writing a book about my grandmother's experiences as the wife of a West Virginia minister
and am eager to know what churches existed in Nestorville at the time of her marriage to Rev.
Millard Fillmore PRITCHARD in October 1887 and if they are still in use. My grandfather later
transferred to the West Virginia Methodist Conference, but I believe that his Nestorville charge
was a United Brethren Church. His first wife, Margaret (Maggie) Cerilda KELLEY, died in
childbirth January 12, 1887 at age 22, leaving two children. Incidentally, I see that his initials are
incorrectly listed as N. E. Pritchard in the records of Nestorville Cemetery, Barbour County, no
doubt because they had become indistinct on her gravestone by the time it was enumerated. He
was named for U.S. President Millard Fillmore; thus, his initials were M. F. Pritchard. He married
my grandmother, Rosa Bell NESTOR, a member of his church, within the year and they had three
children of their own, one being my father, Ernest Markwood Pritchard.
I seek the parents of Scott PHILLIPS and Hannah Kelley PHILLIPS. Upon the death of Margaret
(Maggie) Cerilda Kelley Pritchard, Hannah and Scott temporarily took the new baby, Amelia Gay
PRITCHARD (b. December 22, 1886). My grandfather expected her to be returned when he
married (2) Rosa Bell NESTOR, my grandmother. Instead, Hannah and Scott moved to Oregon,
taking Amelia Gay with them. Consequently, the Pritchards never again saw her, although they
corresponded for many years through several generations.
One family letter says that Hannah KELLEY was a niece of Margaret's father, Garrett KELLEY
(b. April 18, 1840; m. Amelia NESTOR, b. 1843, daughter of Jacob NESTOR and Nancy
HUFFMAN). Therefore, Hannah must have been the daughter of one of Garrett's siblings: Isaac
Kelley, b. August 09, 1821; Elias Kelley, b. January 08, 1833; Oscar Kelley, b. January 13, 1835;
Solomon Kelley, b. January 13, 1835; Cymon Kelley,b. April 18, 1840 (twin of Garrett); Elam
Kelley, b. February 25, 1842; or James Lewis Burbridge Kelley, b. May 04, 1847.
In addition to identifying the parents of Hannah KELLEY, I seek also the parents of Scott
PHILLIPS. Although the surname PHILLIPS appears frequently in the NESTOR line, I can find
none who qualify as the parents of Scott. Unfortunately, Amelia Gay's descendants did not inherit
a record of her "adoptive" parents.

CAPITO - TALBOTT - WILSON
My grandmother was Dorothy Wade TALBOTT. Her father & mother were
Maronee CAPITO and Georgia Wilson TALBOTT. My great, great grandfather was Dr.
Elam Dowden TALBOTT of Philippi, WV. (His parents were Richard & Margaret
Dowden TALBOTT.)
I am looking for any information regarding this family. I know they lived in
Philippi for quite some time. Perhaps some of their friends or family are
still living??? They used to live in a house called "Greystone," which is
now the residence of the college president.
If you have ANY info regarding these TALBOTTs, please let me know. I would
be very interested to know why they sold their ancestral home, why they
moved to Florida, how my great grandmother Georgia Clark WILSON died, and
anything else people can tell me.
Thank you! Marissa

MINEAR - SHERMAN - SHIREMAN
I am conducting family research and there are ties to Barbour County.
I am attempting to trace my mother's side. My mother: Edna Virginia
SHERMAN, born in Barbour Co, approx. 8/31/1912; she was referred to as
Virginia.
Her parents: Walter W. SHERMAN and Ocie MINEAR. Walter, my grandfather,
was born in 1879. He was referred to as Squire SHERMAN; she died at
approx. 40 yrs of cancer; my mother was about 17; her sister, Dorothy was
approx. 6 and the third sister, Mary Alice was approx. 4 yrs. old.
Walter's parents: Martin Van Buren SHERMAN and Engaby JOHNSON; married in
approx. 1867 in Barbour Co. Martin was born in approx. 1843 -1845.
Martin's father: John SHERMAN, Shenandoah, VA, born approx. 1796. That's
all the info. I have. John SHERMAN's wife: Sarah FITZWATER, born approx. 1810, Frederick,
Hardy, VA .... per Family Search.com.
At times, there is a variation on the surname: SHIREMAN on the 1860
Barbour Co. census. Martin was listed as 15 yrs. of age.
Ocie's parents: John MINEAR and Virginia PHILLIPS; married in approx.
1879. John was born approx. 1855; Virginia in approx. 1858. I don't
believe that MINEAR is a very common name.
I have no info. on John's parentage or if he was born in Barbour Co. Any
help would be much appreciated.
Virginia's father may have been named, "Blackmon or Blackman PHILLIPS."
Thank you. Linda Rabbett, Rocky River, OH

HADDIX
I have traced my great grandparents to Barbour County and and your
genealogy website. I saw an email from Spank Carlson dated 2002 inquiring
about my family. He asks the same questions I would be interested in
acquiring information about or any other for that matter. I saw your name
as the contact person for information about Winfield and Caroline HADDIX
and am hoping you can help me out. I would really appreciate any help you
could send my way. Ken Korte
NOTE: This is Spank Carlson's query from Dec 12, 2002.
I'm looking for information on Winfield Scott HADDIX and his wife Caroline C.(?)
WATKINS. The information given me indicates that both were born in Barbour County (WSH
May 22, 1855 - CCW Mar 12, 1856), married there (Jan 20, 1873), then left for Nebraska around
1877.
They had 13 children, but I think only Calvin, Sam, Ross and Newton could have been born
before they moved west. Any info on any of these folks and/or the lineage of Winfield or Caroline
would be greatly appreciated.
