HALL - MAIN - TALBOTT

I have explored my greatgrandfather: Sabius MAIN (born april 1832), his second wife, Sara Jane MAIN is my point of interest (born Sept. 1826.) I am looking for her maiden name, mother and father, possibly TALBOTT or HALL. Also of interest to me would be the discovery of Sabius's first wife, who I believe gave birth to Sabius B. MAIN (born August 1875) and Joseph MAIN (born August 1882). I made a trip to Philippi and found an area where the Talbott farm existed, along with a graveyard on the property . . . very informative . . . but I need to make the TALBOTT-MAIN connection, which would be through the second wife, Sara Jane MAIN . . . I am helping my mom to accomplish this, because she wishes to pass her discoveries on to her children. Thanks for your help and God bless, Patti

SAMPLES - STRADER

I need info on a Mrs. Matilda E. STRADER who lived in the Union District of Barbour County. My father, William "Willie" SAMPLES, born 1901, was a orphan at a very early age. He was placed in Mrs Strader's home by the state; at the time he was 9 years old. In the 1910 census Willie was 9 and Mrs Strader was 50 and a widow. I have no info on his life after that until the 1920 census. I was just wondering what kind of life he had at that young age. He died in 1974 and is buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, Chas, WV.

If anyone has info on this could you please e mail me?
thanks, csamples

COONTZ - KOONTZ - PRICE - WILMOTH

I am researching on Delilah Anne COONTZ (COONTS, KOONTS, KOONTZ) who was from Barbour County. She was born July 9, 1869 and had a child in 1889 named William WILMOTH. Now from census records and family history, Wm was not from a marriage, but out of wedlock. Would it be possible for you to look up a possible marriage for her and a WILMOTH? Delilah's husband that I know was Charles Berry PRICE and they were married on her birthday in 1895.

I would also be very curious to see if William married and had children. I heard that he died young, but I have found him at 20 years of age living with Charles and Delilah. I really appreciate any time you can give and if you just know of any avenues I need to explore as far as for what happened to William I would Greatly Appreciate it. This boy has kind of possesed my mind as to where he came from and where he went. Thanks greatly for your help, even if you do not find anything. Giving your time to me means alot. BARNHOUSE - LEMASTERS

I'm researching the BARNHOUSE family.

I'm trying to find obituary and burial information for my great grandfather, Hamilton Douglas BARNHOUSE. He lived to near 100 years d. 26 Oct 1957. He was, at age 92, the oldest living minister of the WV Conference, Evangelical United Brethern Church.

He was married (2) to Harriet (LEMASTERS) BARNHOUSE, so he might be buried with her.

My family visited him in Junior, WV in the early fifties so I'm assuming that is where he died and is buried.

Any information will be appreciated.

FELTON

Mary Ellen was my G-G-G-G Grandmother. She and her husband John FELTON (1760-1844) lived in Whetsell Settlement, Preston County, for 27 years where John was a Justice of the Peace for 24 years and Sheriff at the time of his death in 1844. Sometime between 1844 and 1849 Mary Ellen moved to the home of her son Daniel in the Cove District of Barbour County, WV. She can be found there in the 1850 Census. According to old WV histories, Mary Ellen died there in 1857 and is buried in Barbour County. John may be as well.

What towns are found in the Cove Magisterial District?

What cemeteries existed there in 1844-1857?

THANKS in advance for any light you might be able to shed on these questions!

PUGH

I am looking for a John W. PUGH that was born in West Virginina in 1846 (according to Spring Hill, Warren Co., Iowa 1880 Census). According to the census his parents were born in Virginia and that is all I know about his parents. The transcription was incorrect on his name, for the 1880 (LDS website), but I found my great great grandpa's name and birth listed and same county as well as John W. PUGH's wifes name was correct too (Florence Pugh).

John W. PUGH moved to Iowa sometime before the age of 12 (I found his name on a census in Springhill, Warren Co., IA 1860) but he was listed without any family.

I also found him listed again 1879 at Greenfield Township Warren Co., IA

He married a Margaret PERKINS in 21 Dec 1868, she passed away and then he married a Florence CHERRY Sept 1869. He and had several children with her: He died in 1921 and was buried in Warren Co., IA

Samuel Wesley (born 12 Feb 1877 died 31 Aug 1962)He married two women as well. Bertha Willis Birth: 18 Aug 1883 died 16 Feb 1914. They had a lot of children: When Bertha died, Samuel married a Mary H. (b. 10 June 1880 d. 13 June 1954)

I have births and deaths of almost all the names listed and I received all of them from Warren county if you like them, but I believe that they may have moved to another neighbor county.

I can trace back to John W. PUGH for sure, but I cannot find out what happened to him. . . How he came to Iowa and who his parents were.
Thanks, Janice Brethen (Pugh)
Note from MCLew:I found this PUGH family in the 1860 Census of Barbour Co.: Morris PUGH, age 53, tenant; Sarah, age 47; Elizabeth, 25; Sarah, 23; Frederick, 21; Mary A., 19; Lucy, 17; John, 15; Virginia, 13; Nancy, 9; Martha, 7; Nettie, 4. All born in VA. Could this be your John Pugh and his family? There were no Pugh's in the transcription of the 1850 Census of Barbour Co.

ROACH

I'm looking for information on my great-great-great grandfather Page B. ROACH who is listed in the 1850 Taylor county census. He was 45 at the time. I'm looking for more info on him. The 1850 census says he was born in Virginia, but perhaps that was West Virginia before it became a state in 1863.

I understand that Taylor county was formed in 1844 from Harrison, Barbour, Marion and perhaps Monongalia counties, so there are no earlier census records for Taylor county. That being the case, I'm unsure which county Page may have lived in before 1850.

Are there any references to Page B. Roach in Barbour county?

Thanks so much for the help as I have hit a serious brick wall on this one! - Harold "Butch" Roach

Double trouble -- I have found two Hayes BENNETTs one according to birth records is a Taylor H. born to Adam H. and Martha E. BENNETT -- birth on Dec. 2 1876 in Pendleton County, and the other Hayes is the son of Daniel and Sallie Ann ARBOGAST. Hayes's wife was Alice PHILLIPS. Both Hayeses are in Pendelton County 1900 and 1930 census one m. to a Bessie (VANDEVANDER); she and Hayes are buried in Pendleton County at Wimer Cemetery #4. Hayes has only death date Nov 7 1954, Bessie -- dates 1891 d-1965. Since both Hayeses are listed in 1880 census, are both listed age 3 -- I'm having trouble finding which child belongs to which parent, and identifying their children. PHILLIPS - SNYDER

I find a lot of marriages for Barbour County, which never got registered anywhere -- either in Barbour, or its predeccesors, Lewis, Harrison, or Randolph. Other locations where I have seen this type of thing, I have found a circuit minister who was either filing his marriages back in his home town or state, or the next town he rode to. So my question is: does anyone know of any circuit ministers serving Barbour County area back in 1830-1860?

Marriages I'm looking for include: Benjamin and Jemina (possibly her surname is SNYDER) PHILLIPS, about 1845; William Robert PHILLIPS, Jr. and Margaret ?? about 1845; and Catherine PHILLIPS to unknown about 1830, widowed in 1860.

REED / WEAVER

My great, great grandfather Benjamin F. REED married Rachel WEAVER, daughter of John WEAVER. It appears that he is buried in the Taylor Drain Methodist Church Cemetery. After the tornado, I have read that two stones remain:

R, B F/ / fieldstone
R, W J/ / footstone

But that is the extent of what I have learned. W.J. would have been his brother, Willam, if I read the 1850 Census correctly. But I can not tell for sure just WHO Benjamin F. REED's father was. The Census makes it look as if his father was William P. REED, but Benjamin's middle initial was listed as "T" in the free transcription I was able to find. I have never seen a Benjamin "T" again in any record so I believe this is a mistake made by the transcriber.

Does anyone have any information (I already have the 1850, 1880, and 1830 Census reports,) about Benjamin F. REED, his parents, or his son Ellsworth who married Lorinda HARDBARGER? Below is my direct ancestry. I have tons of information about the WEAVERs, KELLERs, HARDBARGERs, COFFMAN's, and the AMOS Family as well. But I next to nothing about the REEDs that actually shows relationships. Does anyone have any knowledge they could share with me?

Also, as someone else asked, are there cemetary records from the Taylor Drain Methodist Cemetary from before the twister? If so, how can I get them?

My hopeful thanks in advance, Bruce D. Reed 5/14/2004

DUCKWORTH - McGIRR

Researching, especially Mary Jane McGIRR DUCKWORTH and her husband Wm Henry DUCKWORTH. Mary Jane McGIRR DUCKWORTH is the daughter of James and Mary McGIRR who emigrated from (probably) county Armagh (or Tyronne perhaps) Ireland to Allegany County MD in 1815 (now Garret Cty MD).

She is one of three known children of James and Mary McGIRR. Her brother William Clarence, was born during the voyage, and Margaret McGIRR who married Wm WARNICK. William Clarence McGIRR married Jane Elizabeth WARNICK, sister of William.

James (died -- Jun/Jul 1853) and Mary McGIRR remained in Allegany/Garrett cty MD until their deaths. The same is true for Margaret McGIRR WARNICK and Wm WARNICK.

Mary Jane McGIRR DUCKWORTH and Wm Henry DUCKWORTH moved to Harrison Cty VA prior to 1840 (currently Barbour Co. WV) and remained until their deaths.

Wm C McGIRR and Jane Elizabeth WARNICK McGIRR moved to Lawrence County OH (the Ironton area), in the early 1840's (after his July 1841 marriage). I have extensive files on the McGIRRs, WARNICKs and DUCKWORTHs, but you always need confirmation and more.
