Although most of the 1890 census was destroyed in a fire, the census included a special veteran's enumeration which is intact. This was an enumeration of former Union soldiers who served in the Civil War. If you suspect that your ancestor served in the Civil War and they were living in 1890 (or their spouse was living), this is a good place to start your search. Although this census was only for Union soldiers, a number of Confederate soldiers were also listed, their names often being crossed off after enumeration. This census is located on two rolls of microfilm at the National Archives.
