Descendants of Joseph Darrah Compiled by Doris Meyer Tobias. Generation No. 1 1. JOSEPH2 DARRAH (HENRY1) was born 15 Dec 1822 in Virginia (later Marshall County, West Virginia) Tombstone says born 1822, and died 19 Aug 1897 in Welcome, West Virginia. He married MARTHA TRAVIS1 23 Oct 1851 in Marshall County, WV according to Tri-County Researcher, Oct 1999 submittal by Blanche Murner2, daughter of WILLIAM TRAVIS. She was born 18 May 1832 in Virginia, and died 30 May 1896 in Woodland or Welcome, West Virginia. Notes for JOSEPH DARRAH: "Josiah" Darrah in 1870 Marshall County census was listed as a mw (male white) farmer, born in Virginia and listed as age "46" -- two years younger than his birthdate indicates but his wife and children listed in the cenus match those of our "Joseph" Darrah 1880 Marshall County, Franklin County, WV census: DARRAH (324) Joseph...58-wm...farmer...VA...PA...PA Martha...44-wf...keeping house...VA...PA...PA Catharine...24-wf...VA...VA...VA John...22-wm...farmer...VA...VA...VA Rachel...18-wf...VA...VA...VA Wilmina...16-wf...WV...VA...VA Amanda...13-wf...WV...VA...VA Ellen...10-wf...WV...VA...VA Colbert...4-wm...WV...VA...VA Alonzo MOORE...4-wm...gson...WV...unknown 1870 Marshall County, Franklin County, WV census: Darrah (219)(Census says all b. Ramsey is listed as a "Brickmaker" living alone close to the William and Martha Travis family in the 33rd district of Marshall County. The other census records have what appear to be incorrect ages, 35 in 1860 means he was born about 1825; in 1870 the census says he is 46, which indicates he was born about 1824. Rachel Mobley family Bible says he was born December 15,1829. ALBERT CHRISTIAN MEYER, 30 Oct 1903, Tyler County, West Virginia; b. 08 Feb 1872, Monroe County, Ohio; d. 07 Apr 1947, Hannibal, Ohio. Notes for NORA AGNES MOORE: In the 1900 Federal census for Franklin District, Marshall County, West Virginia, Nora A. Moore is listed as a "servant", aged 17, in the household of John and Mary Wilson and their five sons and two grandchildren. According to her daughter, Lula Meyer Thomas, Nora worked as a housemaid for the Frank Travis family who was a neighbor to Frederick and Frederica Fuchs--the uncle and aunt with whom Albert C. Meyer, Sr. lived in Tyler County, West Virginia. Lula guesses that is how her parents met; Nora was 21 years old and Albert was 31 years old when they married. Residence for Nora was "Watkins, Tyler County"--possibly the family she worked for? After many moves as tenant farmers, they eventually lived on a farm purchased by their son Woodrow Meyer above Hannibal, Ohio. After Albert's death in 1947, Nora continued to live on her son's farm with two other sons, Clyde and Harry, until she became mentally incapacitated and was moved to a nursing home on the West Virginia side of the Ohio River. Her family was unhappy with the care she was receiving and Lula took her into her home in Bens Run, WV where she lived until her death in 1968. Her son Woodrow preceded her in death in 1967. Lula remembers that her mother raised chickens and ducks and didn't have to share their produce or profits as did her husband with his crops. "Mother got the feathers for her bed ticking from her ducks." They had two feather beds and the rest were filled with straw. Each spring Nora would have the children remove the old straw and she would wash the ticking. The children would then refill the mattresses, usually at thrashing time when the straw was fresh. Lula says her mother tested whether the duck's feathers were ready to pluck by picking out two feathers. If there was blood on the ends, then it was not time to pluck. 1882 Marshall County Births 07 Sep - Moore, Agnes - R.S. & Elisabeth Moore More About NORA AGNES MOORE: Cause of Death: Natural Causes Cemetery: Northview Cemetery,New Martinsville, WV Church Affiliation: Methodist Occupation: Housemaid; worked at Frank Travis Farm next to Fuchs Farm/Cider Hill Run SS#: 293-34-2054 Notes for ALBERT CHRISTIAN MEYER: Some records show middle name as Christian - His son, Albert Jr.'s records show name as Christ. Occupation: Blacksmith - Farmer Member of St. Johns Methodist Church, Sardis, Ohio Funeral was at St. Johns Methodist Church, Sardis, Ohio Officiating Minister was Rev. J.A. Wright Buried in North View Cemetery, New Martinsville, West Virginia According to his daughter, Lula Meyer Thomas, during the flu epidemic of 1917-18, her father was working as a blacksmith for the Hopewell Gas Company but because so many of his neighbors were sick with the flu, he missed work so he could feed his neighbors' farm animals and was fired. Lula also recalled that her father spoke with a German accent and had a hearty laugh. Albert was the youngest child of Gottleib and Elizabeth Katharina Fuchs Meyer and was born in Monroe County, Ohio on February 8, 1872. His baptism is recorded at the Zion Evangelical Church, Hannibal, Ohio on May 26, 1872. When he was only five-years old, Albert's father, age 48, died of an "obstruction of the bowel" on September 30, 1877, according to the records of the Zion Evangelical Church. Just six years later in 1883, his 51-year-old mother "a few weeks before her death, suffered from mental disorder and on December 22 was found by the water drowned (trough or vat?)". Albert was 11 years old. He left Monroe County and went across the Ohio River to live with his mother's brother and his wife, Gottleib and Frederika Fuchs, who lived on Cider Run Hill near Ten Mile, West Virginia. They also ran a store. Albert was 31 years old when he married Nora, age 23, on October 30, 1903 in Sandusky, Tyler County, West Virginia. Nora had worked as a housemaid at the neighboring Frank Travis farm next to his aunt's farm and that is how they met according to their daughter Lula. Their first child, Lula Christina Meyer, was born in 1905 at the Fuchs farm. Lula said she was eight years old when her great-aunt Frederika Fuchs died. Besides working as a blacksmith, Albert was a tenant farmer. In 1921, the year Albert C. Meyer, Jr. was born, they lived on the Fred Travis farm at Ten Mile, West Virginia. Next they lived and worked on the Yoho farm in Minnie, West Virginia. From about 1927-28 they lived at the Wells farm then in 1929, they moved to the Pyle farm. In 1932, they moved to the Schrader farm. They raised corn, wheat, oats, rye, hay, cattle and hogs. In February 1947, they moved to Ohio after their son Woody, who lived in Kent, Ohio, bought a farm near his wife's (Berger) family's home above Hannibal, Ohio. Al and Lula recall that their Dad could yodel very well and liked limberger cheese. Al also remembered that as a blacksmith his Dad would take the u-shaped magneto out of old Model Ts and make a cold chisel. He also made new rims for wagon wheels. Albert recalls cranking the blower on the forge to keep the fire going. Albert remembers that his Dad said "if you get a lickin' at school, you'll get another one when you get home." So Albert said they never told him. Lula's daughter Vera recalls how Albert would travel the 8-10 miles to New Martinsville to sell their cream or butter and when he would return late in the evening, would start yodeling so that Nora could hear him approaching and could start his dinner.
