Middle school Assistant Principal Randy Nutter said, “she was very loved by all students in the system, but especially by the special education students whom she taught over her 26 years in Pleasants County.

Pleasants County traditionally has closed schools when a teacher or service personnel from a particular school dies, said school board president Debbie Thompson.

“We have closed schools in the past out of respect for the deceased and especially in this case, the system at these two schools was like family to Jerri. Other than her husband her immediate family was not in the area. So, the faculty and school was her support system,” Thompson said.

“Caplinger began this school year,” said Nutter, noting she was only able to work for two weeks. “She worked as long as possible and even used a wheel chair those first two weeks.”

School Principal Donna Barksdale said, “She was a special person who will be missed. She gave a lot to her students and colleagues.”

Students, friends and staff gave testimonials at the 11 a.m. service at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home in Vienna, Nutter said.

Drowned

Viola Ball Cornell, wife of Lawrence Cornell, was drowned in the large spring at their home near Salama early yesterday morning. She was subject to fainting spells and it is presumed that in one of these she met her death. Her husband left her at the house and went to the field for the horse, and on his return found her lifeless body lying in the spring, her head and shoulders submerged. All efforts to resuscitate her prove futile.

She had been married less than two years, and leaves a little babe only five months old.

Seven Drown In Car Overturned in Creek

Seven county residents - four of them children - drowned Saturday night when their car sliced off the narrow road and over an embankment into Middle Island Creek.

The eighth passenger of the 1965 Mustang, 14 year old Joseph Francis, escaped from the submerged car and swam and ran to the nearby Delno Truex home for help.

The victims:
James Cronin, 28, Rt. 2, St. Marys, James Edward Cronin, 9 his son; Billy Dale Smith, 29, Rt. 1, St. Marys; his nine year old twin daughters, Sonda Irene and Tonda Ann and their sister, Brenda Sue, 8; and Larry (Bud) Templeton, 44, Rt. 1, Friendly.

The mishap occurred just after 10:00 p. m., Saturday, after the car ran off W. Va. 3-13, the unpaved route above Middle Island, just beyond the Truex home.

The youth, who had learned to swim only last month while working at the park, pounded at the Truex door, then returned to the road with a flashlight to halt any passerby, while Mrs. Truex telephoned for help. First to arrive was Trooper Bill Vira, followed by Pleasants County Emergency Squad and the Davis Motor Co. wrecker.

The young survivor told police he did not know how he extracted himself from the car, but that he swam towards the other side of the stream before noticing the car taillights, reversing himself, reaching the upper bank and dashing to the nearest home. Francis was quoted as saying that Cronin, driver of the car, had been nodding his head and that he had tried to awaken him by shaking just as the vehicle veered off the road. "He sort of went to sleep," the youth told investigating Trooper Vira.

The car just slipped off the side of the road and went down a very steep embankment, dropping about 15 feet into the water, according to Trooper Vira. There was no evidence of speeding or any slide marks on the dry roadway, he added.

"There was the car turned over in the creek, with just the back wheels and the bumper sticking out of the water," the trooper described the scene after Francis flagged him down with the flashlight and turned around and headed up the hollow where the youth said the car was.

"The wrecker pulled the car from the water," the trooper reported, "and all seven bodies were removed after the car was brought to shore. That boy was lucky to get out alive. He told us he had a rough time out therein the water. It was dark and he couldn't see much of anything. He somehow managed to make it to shore and go for help, It was just too late to do anything for the others when help arrived , " he remarked.

Man dies in fall at power station: Marietta resident fell about 200 feet from inside smokestack Saturday
By Brad Bauer, bbauer@mariettatimes.com

A Marietta man working inside a tower at the Pleasants Power Station near Willow Island fell to his death early Saturday, Allegheny Power officials reported.

Killed was Kinsey K. Culp, 37, who was installing a metal liner inside the newly constructed smokestack when he fell about 200 feet from a catwalk.

The 7 a.m. incident remains under investigation. Culp’s body was sent to the West Virginia State Medical Examiner’s Office in Charleston for an autopsy.

Culp, a union boilermaker, was working for Pullman Power, a Baltimore, Md.-based contractor hired by Allegheny to construct the tower. It was unclear how long Culp had been working on the project, which began in early 2006.

“Pullman’s safety record during this project has been very good,” said Allegheny spokesman Allen Staggers. “They are obligated by our contract to maintain a safety program and to send us monthly reports. This is the first safety problem since the start of the project.”

Staggers said Culp had been working for about an hour with another individual before the fall. He said officials determined the other man was not involved in the fall, nor was he injured.

Staggers said the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was contacted regarding the accident and had investigators on site at the power station by Saturday afternoon to conduct their own investigation into the accident.

OSHA officials could not be reached for comment Sunday. Pleasants County sheriff’s deputies said OSHA officials left the accident scene late Saturday and were not expected back until today.

A preliminary sheriff’s office investigation determined the fall was accidental, according to a deputy who declined to give his name.

Staggers said OSHA will conduct a much more thorough investigation.

“We have an initial assessment of the accident, but OSHA will likely give us a much more detailed account of what happened,” Staggers said.

There is no timeline on how long the OSHA investigation could take.

Officials with Pullman Power could not be reached for comment Sunday.

The new smokestack is part of a new system to reduce emissions at the coal-fired electric generation facility, Staggers said. The unit is expected to be operational by early 2008.

John Cunningham Killed-Mistaken for a Squirrel

A deplorable tragedy occured Saturday morning in the vicinity of Federal, this county, when John E. Cunningham was accidently shot and almost instantly killed by A. A. Whaley, a neighbor. The victim was picking apples near the roadside while Whaley was trying to get a shot at a squirrel running on a fence. His eyes were momentarily taken from the squirrel, and when returned it had left the fence. He saw a limb bend just above where it was last seen, and thinking it had jumped up into the apple tree he fired. Instead of the object he shot at being the squirrel it proved to be Mr. Cunningham's hand reaching out to pull in the limb. The load of shot struck and penetrated the hand and passed on striking the temple of the unfortunate man killing him within thirty minutes.

Squire Carroll and others from this city went out in the afternoon, and held an inquest. The cause of his death was accidental.

The deceased was 67 years, 8 months and 8 days old, and is survived by his wife and family.

The funeral was held at the Powell church on Monday afternoon, the funeral services being conducted by Rev. McCulty. The remains were laid to rest in the Powell graveyard.

Mr. Whaley is said to have been almost crazed for his part in the sad affair.
