151st Regiment VA Militia (Mercer County)
Lt. Col., John S. Carr, commanding
Rolls show that Companies A to F were in service from August to October 13, 1861 when discharged.
According to A Guide to Virginia Military Organizations, 1861-1865, by Lee A. Wallace, the 151st
Regt, was in the 19th Brigade of Brig. Gen. Augustus Alexandria Chapman, along with the 86th Regiment (Giles
County) Lt. Col. James W. English commanding; the 108th Regiment (Monroe County) Col. John M. Rowan
commanding; the 166th Regiment (Monroe County), Col. William B. Suttle commanding; the 79th Regiment
(Greenbrier County) Col. George F. Henry commanding; and the 135th Regiment (Greenbrier County) Col. John
Snyder commanding. Organizationally, this brigade came under the Fifth Division of Maj. Gen Kenton Harper,
later Colonel of the 5th Regiment VA Volunteers (resigned 1861).

A Company was mustered at Jumping Branch, VA (now WV) on August 23, 1861. The unit consisted of 46
effectives with 10 additional men joining by October 2. By deactivation on October 13, 1861 the unit had
suffered 9 losses. Three of the men (Privates George Hunt, Benjamin Skinner and Hiram Foster) had been
released to join CSA units then forming. Personal or family sickness accounted for the other six. Privates
William Carner and William Anderson and First Sergeant David Austin were detailed by LTC Carr to guard the
salt wells.

effectives, with ten additional men joining by October 7. By deactivation on October 13, 1861 the company
had suffered four losses: three to sickness and one man (Private Patton White) returned to join his militia
company in Wyoming County when it was called out on September 7, 1861.

effectives. By deactivation on October 13, 1861 the company had suffered 15 losses. Thirteen were due to
sickness on being determined medically unfit for service by the surgeon, one (Private Joseph Woolwine) left
to join the CSA and one (Private John D. Thompson) was released to go home for threshing.

additional men joined by September 24, including 2d Lieutenant John Campbell who joined the company on
September 8. By deactivation on October 17, 1861 the company had suffered 17 losses. Two men (Privates
William K. Fren
ch and David Wells) passed the age for militia membership within their first month of service. Personal or
family sickness accounted for 12, two (Privates Robert Swader and James H. Bell) were directed to be
released from service by Brigadier General A. A. Chapman for unspecified reasons and Private Leonard S.
Mitchell returned to serve in the Tazewell County militia when it was called out on September 6.

E Company mustered on August 23, 1861 at the farm of Joseph Brammer and consisted of 59 effectives,
three additional men had been sick when the company was called out and joined on September 21. By
deactivation on October 10, 1861 the company had lost ten men. Nine were due to sickness and one, Private
Cornelius B. Deeds, left on September 23 to drive a wagon for the CSA forces. Ten of the men were captured
in skirmishes with Federal forces during January 1862, nine alone on January 23, and eventually returned
home after being exchanged at Vicksburg, MS on November 22, 1862.

F Company mustered on August 22, 1861 at the farm of Allen Fleshman and consisted of 52 effectives.
The only man missing was Private Isaac Ellison having been sick when the initial call went out. He joined
the company on October 2. By the time of deactivation on October 13, 1861 the company had lost 22 men. The
most were due to personal or family illness but four were released to repair mills and one was discharged
for threshing. One man, Private John Brammer, only served 15 days due to illness but was captured in March
1862 by Federal forces. He was exchanged at Vicksburg, MS on November 22 of that year.
