Mason County was formed in 1804 from Kanawha County and
named for George Mason (1725-1792) of Fairfax County Virginia.
George Mason believed in rights for the common man and freedom
for all people. His paper "The Declaration of Rights"
was widely accepted in 1776. Most of Mason's suggestions were
adopted in the first eleven Amendments to the Constitution in
1787.
