Sherrard's Eskey Brothers in World War I

Three sons of Ann Jane "Jennie" McCaffery (1866-1920) and John Wesley Eskey (1855-1929) served during World War I. The Eskeys were long-time residents of Sherrard, Marshall County, W.Va.

Wheeling Daily Register, 18 June 1918: "Dr. Ellsworth Eskey, of Sherrard, who graduated last year from the University of Pittsburgh Dental school, has arrived in France. He has a brother in France and another on the way."

Obituary: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, 18 Mar 1963 - Services for Dr. Ellsworth E. Eskey, 67, will be held today at 2 p.m. at H. Samson's, 537 N. Neville St., Oakland. Dr. Eskey died Friday (March 15) at Mercy Hospital of a skull fracture suffered in a fall. He had lived and maintained dental offices at 3519 Fifth Ave., Oakland. Dr. Eskey, who was born in Sherrard, W.Va., was a graduate of Pittsburgh Dental School and a member of the Odontological Society of Western Pennsylvania. He was a veteran of World War I and a member of South Hills Country Club. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Kay Eskey; a son, John Richard; two brothers, Ward and Arthur; and three grandchildren. Burial will be in Homewood Cemetery. The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to West Penn Hospital.

Obituary: The Evening Star, Washington, D.C., 20 Oct. 1948 - Rites t Be Held Friday for James Edwin Eskey - Services will be held in arlington Cemetery for james Edwin Eskey, 59, disabled World War I veteran and a brother of Arthur L. Eskey, vice president of the Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co. Mr. Eskey died at St. Petersburg, Fla., Monday, after a heart attack. - Wounded by shrapnel, Mr. Eskey had spent several years in veterans' hospitals. Although a native of Pittsburgh and a summer resident there, he had spent most of his time in St. Petersburg. He had been a temporary resident here on several occasions. In Florida he was active in the American Legion and fraternal organizations. - Besides his brother here, Mr. Eskey is survived by his widow, Mrs. Marguerite Eskey, St. Petersburg, and two brothers and a sister, all of Pittsburgh; Drs. Ward W. and Ellsworth E. Eskey and Mrs. Henrietta Orum, a former resident here.
