USMC LANCE CORPORAL EDWIN RUSSELL DANEHART

Rifleman - Killed by explosive device on May 8, 1969 in Vietnam

Buried at Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia

Edwin "Snook" Danehart was born July 31, 1947 in Wheeling. His parents were Carl Charles Danehart and Della Mae Behrens.

In 2017, the Division of Highways requested that the West Virginia Senate pass a resolution to name the New County Line Bridge, carrying County Route 5 over Big Wheeling Creek in Marshall County, the USMC Lance Corporal Edwin Russell ‘Snook’ Danehart Memorial Bridge.

The resolution provides excellent biographical information, including the fact that he came from a large family. However, there is one error. He did not graduate from Sherrard High School in Marshall County in 1965. Rather, he graduated in 1967. I graduated in 1965 and he is shown as a sophomore in my senior yearbook.

That said, he was one who lived close to the border of Marshall and Ohio Counties. He is credited to Ohio County but he must have lived in Marshall County while attending school in Sherrard.

Lance Corporal Danehart's tour in Vietnam started on October 5, 1968. Following his death on May 8, 1969, he received a Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal.

Edwin's parents, Carl and Della Mae, died in 1972 and 1975, respectively.
